When I was a child, my dad was the smartest person on the planet. When I was a teen, dad seemed to have lost it, and was not so smart after all. As a young adult, dad was pretty smart again. As an older adult, I realized that dad was very smart...but it was okay to disagree with him on some things, because as smart as he was, he didn't always have an open mind.

Being smart doesn't always go along with having an open mind. In fact, maybe open-mindedness has nothing at all to do with intelligence. Maybe it has to do with longevity. Old men tend to become set in their ways.
