Being ill or troubled can make a normally happy person depressed. Wallowing in that suffering will make it worse, but it didn't cause the depression. It is a symptom. Treating the symptom of depression can make the healing process for the cause easier but cannot cure it.

I like to be happy and think positively, but this quote implies that so long as I am thinking positively, bad things can't happen to me or will change with my attitude.

"You are not happy because you are well. You are well because you are
happy. You are not depressed because trouble has come to you, but
trouble has come to you because you are depressed. You can change
your thoughts and feelings, and then the outer things will come to
correspond, and indeed there is no other way of working."

One thing is for sure - I am no Sharon Brown. I suspect she would have had a perfect response to your comment. Indeed, this quote was one of her choices. I also have qualms about it.

I mean, to some extent this idea would work. Positive thinking and mind over matter can be effective, but like you said, not always.

I wonder if the author of this quote ever regretted his words.

I think this must have been part of a motivational speech. A sound bite that was intended to be encouraging. But for me it says that if I feel depressed, regardless of the circumstance, I have failed.

I too wish Sharon could give us her interpretation and insight.

Im with Brenda on this one.
Sometimes we are depressed about a situation we can't change no matter how much we change our attitude to a more positive one.
I sometimes think being depressed sometimes is good for us because it makes us appreciate the times we aren't depressed. Life is a roller coaster type of thing. There's up and down curves and straight stretches all happening in a blur. Hopefully we won't get stuck in the lows and run off track in the curves.

Now that is what I call an optimistic attitude. However, I'll bet there are not a lot of other people who think like that.

True Nap. Most people seem to focus on the negative so hard that they forget there's anything positive to look at.
A young friend of mine once said she felt trapped in our small town because it felt like there was a wall around it keeping her from getting out to do what she wanted to do. I told her if she only looked at the wall she would miss seeing the gate that led to the other side .

That is how I felt about my years in Los Angeles. Trapped in a concrete jungle. Then it finally dawned on me that the same road that brought me there could take me back to the north coast.
