Men and dogs also do as they please and women are already used to the idea. ![]() |

Spoken like a faithful dog owner. Puppy owner. ![]() I, on the other hand, am a cat person and I can relate well to the quote. I could as easily have titled this quote "Men and Dogs," but the original quote belongs to someone else and he specifically said women and cats. He was probably referring to the fact that dogs are eager to learn and even more eager to please their owners. Cats however, that's a different story. They can learn, but prefer not to, and they don't care about pleasing anyone but themselves. Hmmmmmm. Now when put into those terms, I'm thinking the quote might sound more accurate if if had been about "Men and cats" instead of women. ![]() |

I often tell my hubby that the cat acts just like him. ![]() Shine Your Light |

Heinlein's views were an unusual combination of sexist and womens' lib, more of a "vive la difference!" His female characters were strong, powerful, independent -- and most definitely feminine. Actually, I'm unsure to what extent his personal viewpoints were expressed in his writing, as I "know" him mostly through his books. After "Stranger in a Strange Land" was published, there was a period where fans camped out in front of his house, "grokking" each other, and his reaction was basically the cranky old guy waving his cane and yelling "hey you kids, get off my lawn!!" Not trying to start a literary or social debate... just got me reminiscing! Circles of Support for Breast Cancer I'm learning to dance in the rain! Thank you, Sally & Chris & Sharon. |

Jill, that is a very interesting perspective on the author. I read Stranger in a Strange Land, so many years ago that I am afraid I have forgotten most of the book. Maybe it is time to find a copy and reread it! |

I'm glad to have your input here, Jill, because I know you are a well-read person. Hopefully you'll share your thoughts here more often. You could be our new Sharon. She used to shed light on every quote, and the teacher in her knew just how to straighten us out. She encouraged us to think. We miss her. |

I miss her dreadfully, too. I've been enjoying your choice of quotes and images! I'm glad the format lets me easily go back to previous ones, as I can always re-read one that suits my mood. Thanks! I've been appreciating the daily quote over on NGA, too. I'm not sure if Trish is doing those, or one of the "kids" (who aren't really children any more, are they? LOL) I did really enjoy Heinlein's books for adults, but I'm even more a fan of his books for young teens. He put one out around Christmas, quite faithfully, for many years. "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel," "Podcayne of Mars," and others.. OK, just found a good listing of them on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinlein_juveniles Circles of Support for Breast Cancer I'm learning to dance in the rain!
