Today's recipe is one from my past. Coming from a large family without alot of money for treats this was Mom's way of treating us to something different during the summer.

Root Beer Float

I prefer root beer but you can use any flavor of soda you prefer. Vanilla ice cream is traditional but have fun trying your favorite ice cream with different soda flavors. It's good with Pepsi and DH likes it with Coke. Or try it with fruit juice. Pineapple juice anyone?

Hope this brings back memories to others on here. Enjoy.

Going to A&W for a root beer float was a favorite thing for me as a child. Thanks for reminding us to have one. They are wonderful.

A&W! That's a blast from the past, Arlene. Did you hear that some folks in CA are starting up car-hops again? On roller skates! I saw it on the news but don't remember where it is.

We still have the occasional RBF for a treat. When my DSS comes to visit from England, we always have them. Thanks for the reminder, Margaret. Smiling

I know there is still an A&W in the Minneapolis airport on your way to Gates A&B; Those are the gates that the small planes fly out of. We fly OC to Minne and then have to walk right by that A&W to get to the little plane that takes us into Fort Dodge.

On a side note, my earliest memory of having any food other than what my mother cooked at home was my dad taking us to "The Dog House" My mother was a carhop there a couple of days a week for "pin" money. It was so much fun to drive in there and have our mother walk up to the car and take our order.

Kathleen, on roller skates. Seems like there used to be one somewhere; or am I just thinking of "Happy Days"? . . . blurring tv with reality? lol

Wow I didn't expect this recipe to generate so much comment. There's still an A&W in the big city of Somerset in Pulaski County KY. Or was last time I was up that way it's been a month or longer since our last trip that way because a CO OP store opened in town and now we don't have to go so far to get chicken feed or other farm related supplies.

At our neighborhood A&W, we used to order "swamp water" - it was a mixture of A&W root beer and orange soda. I remember asking for it elsewhere and they didn't have it, so it must have been a regional thing. We would get a lot of raised eyebrows from out-of-towners - that's always fun for kids.

BTW, it didn't seem to work with any other brands of soda.
