I've added Birmingham to the Database entry for Phillips for you, Do you have any idea as to when? Birmingham is our second city and pretty huge so there are quite a few Ada's there over the generations. An approximate date would help a lot.

I asked Mom...Ada Phillips (no middle name) born 1903.

I'm interested to find out if she had a sister that came to North America too.

I cant find one Ada Phillips in the Birmingham area born 1903, However I have found an Ada born late 1900 in Birmingham as follows from the 1901 census:-

Thomas Phillips 42
Alice Phillips 39
George Phillips 16
William Phillips 11
Emma Phillips 9
Ernest Phillips 2
Ada Phillips 5 Months

They were living in Palmer Street, Aston, Birmingham is this the family? The Family were still there in 1911 except the George who had probably left home and Ernest who may have died.

When did she come to America? Phillips wasn't her married name was it - if so I'm looking for the wrong person!

According to Mom...Grammas Dad was Evan (Harry) Phillips. They lived in Great Barr. Gramma never would tell anybody her true age. She came to Canada in her teens apparently.

Mom remembers the name Leedham in there somewhere, might have been Evan's wife's maiden name.

Phillips wasn't her married name. She came to Canada and married a Garrett.

One more thing. Grammas Mom died when she was 13...so Evan might have re-married after that.

I really appreciate this Lovey dubby

I have found an EDWIN Phillips who was born in the Great Barr area in 1878, he had a daughter called ADA born in 1897. His wife was called Hannah and they were married in 1896 in the Stourbridge area. (Hannah was from Quinton which is near Stourbridge and her maiden name was Hackett) in the 1901 census they are living in the Aston area of Birmingham - not far from Great Barr.

In the 1911 census Hannah is a widow,( Edwin died in 1908 when Ada was 12/13), and is living in Quinton with her daughter Ada, a second daughter Mabel born in 1907 and a son Oswald born 1908.

I think this must be your family - and that it was Ada's father that died not her mother. There just isn't another suitable Ada in that part of England.

It looks as though she arrived in Quebec on 28 April 1922. She travelled alone.

Edwin's parents were called Henry and Elizabeth both born 1841/2. Henry was from London and Elizabeth from Birmingham, and Henry was a tailor if any of that helps

.I hope that's useful!!

hmmm...I don't know...is it possible that Gramma was that much older than she claimed? Mom remembers Gramma saying that her Mom was a teacher....

Well its a difficult question but its only 5 years and people did lie and make themselves younger, particularly women and if they had a spouse who was younger than they were. At least one of the original details has to be wrong as there is no one who fits all of them so:-

Lets look at the facts:

The Ada born 1897 was a lot older than her siblings.

She did come to Canada in 1922. If she had been born in 1903 that would have made her 19, not 24. Going to a foreign country alone was a huge step, to do that under 21 is really unusual back then.

She is the only Ada in either the 1901 or 1911 census with a father whose name is remotely right.

One of her parents died when she was 12/13.

This Ada had a father called Edwin not Evan, but she is the only one in the Birmingham area whose father's name was either Harry or began with an E who is anywhere near the right age.

There are no children called Ada in the birth registers for the whole of Birmingham that match the birth date.

Her fathers family were from Great Barr.

I can't track any more recent census as they are not available till 100 years after they were taken so that's probably as close as I can get!!

I'll see what else I can find later today.

I have found one other possible contender in the 1911 census:
Evan Richard Phillips - age 40 - born 1871
Matilda Phillips - age 38
Harry Richard Phillips - age 16
Arthur Phillips - age 13
Gladys Phillips - age 8
Ada Phillips - age 6 so born in 1905

However they live in West Bromwich, which is not Birmingham although near and on the Great Barr side of Birmingham. It is possible they moved later but I can't check on that.

Evan was born in West Bromwich, his parents were Richard and Rebecka (As spelt in the 1881 census) Richard was born in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales about 1837 and Rebecka was from West Bromwich born1842.

There is a marriage record which matches:-
Name: Evan Richard Phillips
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1871
Age: 23
Father's Name: Richard Phillips
Spouse's name: Marion Matilda Rock
Spouse's Age: 22
Spouse's Father's Name: Joseph Rock
Marriage Date: 15 Jul 1894
Marriage Place: West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England

Matilda died in West Bromwich in 1917 when Ada was 12 which fits.

Ada's brother, Harry Richard, married a Hilda Leedham in Sep 1938, in West Bromwich, so that would explain 2 things the name Harry and the Leedham connection.

There is a Hilda Leedham born in West Bromwich in 1906 which is probably her.

If Evan Richard did marry again it was in Wales and there are so many Evans there it is difficult to tell one from the other!!

This family seems to fit all of your criteria except place and Ada is actually 2 years younger than she said. If so the only suitable Ada went to Canada in 1927 when she gave her age as 23. She travelled alone.

Does that sound more likely?

Yes! I think you have it there! That explains the Leedham connection Mom remembers.

Thank you so much!! Lovey dubby
