Perhaps you remember from your own childhood—or that of a friend or relative—the art of making “dolls” wearing gowns fashioned from Hollyhock blossoms. Flower shapes and colors can remind us of real-life objects. Dutchman’s Pipe, Lady’s Slipper Orchid, and Stella d’Oro (Italian for “star of gold”) come to mind. Bleeding Heart (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) belongs to this group as well, but its blossoms are special because they reveal an entire story. This is how it’s told.

I have never heard that before, Larry. It's quite an interesting tale. I re-read it, hoping to discover the origin of the story, but I don't see it.

I can't wait til next year when our Bleeding Heart are in bloom, so I can tell the story myself!

Thanks for your comments, Nancy. I wondered about the story's origin as well, but was unable to come up with a source. Like so many fairy tales, I suspect that its origin is shrouded in the mists of time. I did come across the fact that Lamprocapnos spectabilis was introduced to the West in 1846 by famed Victorian plant collector, Robert Fortune. It would be fairly safe to assume that the story was attached to the flower after that date.

That's Laila, a German shepherd/black lab mix. She's a graduate of the Prison Dog program here in Iowa. My wife and I are members of the Iowa Animal Welfare Foundation. Every summer we hire a professional trainer to work with inmates on training dogs that are considered unadoptable. The trainer works with the prisoners for eight weeks, each week teaching them how to teach the dogs different commands, make them feel more secure, etc.

Laila was in the first graduating class, but was still considered unadoptable, since she'd been so viciously abused. We decided to take her anyway.

The first six months she was basically a basket case. Everything scared her. She wouldn't eat until we moved her food dish into the middle of the room, so that she could see in all directions, should someone try to sneak up on her and beat her.

Gradually, she came out of her shell. It has been so rewarding to watch her progress. She now trusts us implicitly. It took her the better part of five years to reach that point. She'll lie on the floor with us to watch TV and even sleeps on the bed with us now and then. The trainer told us that she would never be a dog that comes bouncing to the door to greet us when we return home. He was wrong! She's doing that now, too. Everyone likes happy endings, and this certainly is one!
