Replacing zippers or buttons on clothing. Fastening shoe straps. Mounting a smoke detector on a wall or ceiling. Securing cushions to outdoor furniture. Hanging signs. This is but a small sampling of the 101 uses of Velcro. No doubt about it, Velcro has taken the world by storm.

WOW Larry . . . what a fun article and it kinda gave me chills how the inventor came up with his idea by the planburdock on his dogs fur --- you just never know when the next big idea is waiting to be found. I used to seem to be a magnet for burdock when walking in the forest at my family cabin. Big Grin

I am a fan of velcro!

Glad you enjoyed the article, Becky. Talk about being a magnet, that would also be my dog, Saphira. In fact, trying to get burrs out of her coat is what got me started thinking about writing this article.

Right you are, Becky. And she comes with a story.

When I turned 65 I had one of those moments where I realized that I didn't have all that many years left on this earth. I asked myself, "What is it that I still want to do and haven't done yet, and what is it that I don't have that I still want to get?" One of the answers was "an Afghan Hound."

I'd always wanted an Afghan, but couldn't afford one (at the height of their popularity, they often went for $2000 or more). To complicate matters, Wilma and I were members of the Iowa Animal Welfare Foundation so I couldn't, in good conscience, get a dog that was not a rescue.

I had spent two weeks on the phone and on the Internet, pretty much convinced that my search was futile, when I got lucky. An Afghan breeder in Austin, Texas, who is also an Afghan rescuer, got one of her Afghans back. She had sold Saphira as a pet, because she couldn't be shown. She was an inch taller than the AKC standard. The elderly lady who bought her had fallen ill, unbeknownst to her family, and couldn't care for her new pet. When family members discovered what was going on, Saphira had become malnourished, dehydrated, and her entire coat was matted down.

There's also a story about how Saphira got her name, but I'll leave that for another time. Smiling

Larry, rescue dog is next in my future too. I am hoping for a Springer Spaniel since I lost Pepper in June 2010. I am not in a position right now for a dog to adobt me but as soon as I am, I'll be looking!

In the meantime, I want to know how she got her name! I love the photo of her nose in the ground. She seems like a fun dog! Lovey dubby

Good for you, Becky! Thumbs up

OK, I'll fess up. Saphira is the name of a belly dancer in Washington, D.C. *Blush* When I was there on business one time, there were posters all over the place advertising her performances. Mind you, I did not go to see her. I'm still trying to convince Wilma of that! Hilarious! Anyway, Saphira the Afghan and Saphira the dancer have a lot in common. They're both female, both have dark hair, and they're both beautiful and exotic. It just seemed to be a good fit.

Afghans have a lot of character. They can be absolutely goofy one minute and then abruptly sit down and pose. I call it "having a regal moment." Hilarious!
They also have this strange habit of moving objects around. They don't damage them in any way, just move them from one place to another. I don't know if this is true of all Afghans, but Saphira is very loving. She'll rub up against me or come over and put her head in my lap when I'm in my recliner. She also rubs up against furniture, just like a cat would do.

And she would kill for a cookie! I can never get away with sneaking one while she isn't looking. She knows every little noise that goes along with my getting one and is on the scene immediately, wanting to know where hers is. We don't dare leave cookies out in the usual places to cool after they're baked. She'll grab as many as she can and run!

Love your Pepper photo, especially the way he's eying the photographer. Saphira will be forever grateful for the cookie! I'm sure she'll know it's in there when she smells the package.
