Thanks for your comments, Nancy. I wondered about the story's origin as well, but was unable to come up with a source. Like so many fairy tales, I suspect that its origin is shrouded in the mists of time. I did come across the fact that Lamprocapnos spectabilis was introduced to the West in 1846 by famed Victorian plant collector, Robert Fortune. It would be fairly safe to assume that the story was attached to the flower after that date.
