| Alaska is an art haven, but not well known for it. Here are some of my "etchings" for your review 1) "Im Anfang ..." (German for "In the beginning ...") 2) "I love you" (Image of the American Sign Language sign for, guess ... "I love you") 3) "Life is a candle" These are charcoal. I'll post some pastels another time. ... I hope to see samples of others' work and whatever comments anyone might want to make. | Absolutely great work, Chris! I have never seen such definition using charcoal. Amazing! And I love the two figures within the fingers of the 'I love you' sign. Very creative. Wonderful detail. I'm anxious to see more of your work. Thanks for sharing it here. |

| Oh I know..saw them too. Just forgot to comment. Somewhere around here I have an acrylic painting, shades of green, Flower Folks, it's called. It's on one of the threads, I think. Reminds me of that, but yours are much more finely detailed. You do wonderful work. |

| Thank you, Sharran, I have a fascination with hands and have made many studies of them ... My thought is that if one can realistically depict hands, one can draw or paint anything. I use them as studies of proportion, light and depth of field. | Here are some additional "hand studies" for you Sharran. The first spells A-B-I-L-I-T-Y in American Sign Language fingerspelling. The second, I call "Man in a Hand." The third is a pen and ink study with black and blue pens I did on a scratch pad during a very boring lecture at a conference ... Usually my conference materials are covered with such doodles .... I usually use my own hands for a model ... I'm right handed, so many of the drawings are of left hands. But if I want to do a right hand, I simply position a mirror so I can see my left hand in it, reversing the image and then I draw that ... making it a Right hand! Enjoy. | Jon, You are an absolute master at concealing faces, animals and who knows what else in every piece of art. When I studied the enlarged eagle, I saw images in every different color- even in the background. Also true in the other pictures as well ! As a fan, I watch and wait........ Louise M |

| I have some nude studies, but I'm not sure if they are appropriate to post here ... they are (in my opinion) nude studies and not distasteful, but who knows what other's opinions in that arena might be. | These are not recent, but you get the idea. Some of these are done with models, others "out of my head." If I can visualize it, I can draw or sculpt it. All are Charcoal. | Had to giggle while looking at the feather bed and then mountain climbing. Oh the pain in that eyebrow! Escher with a bit of Dali mixed in. What a combination! So what do you do with your artwork besides the entertainment value during boring meetings? |

| In college, distant days ago, I did portraits for spending money ... haven't done that in a long, long time. Not really interested in it. Good for a broke student, not good for a family man with a mortgage. Since then, it's just "art for fun" ... I have put some of them on cards for special occasions or gifts. I'll do a piece as a gift ... sometimes a trade: I'll do a work for you, you do one for me. I've traded art for knives, ivory, animal skins, (which I have had made into hats, mukluks or whatnot.) I once did a portrait of Ava when she was about 18, or younger ... not sure what happened to it, maybe I gave it to her parents. Can't remember ... she was in the "boo-faunt" hair style back then ... just now thought about that ... Sometimes I'll do a political satire in an image ... I haven't played with charcoal or pastel in several years now (My oldest Daughter has an order in for a work from me and my wife, Laura. Laura does WONDERFUL watercolor, but she hasn't done that in years, either.) Mostly in recent years I've been doing Stone, Wood and Ivory work/sculpture ... I expect to do more of that now that the nest is starting to empty out. Here's a political image: Called "Storm Shelter" ... and a sculpture image called "Eskimo." I still have the former ... the latter was a commission, so it was sold before it was done (kinda wish I had it back ... you probably know how that goes) ... | On the "feather bed" ... you probably remember Mt. Susitna ... The Anchorage iconic mountain called "Sleeping Lady." So, that's where that idea came from. On the "Mountain Climbing" ... it was a response to a relationship I once had. If you put something on the bridge of your nose, how well can you see it? You can feel it, but it's too close for focus. Some relationships are like that ... | I can't see Storm Shelter very well. Not enough contrast here or something, but I get the idea. Yes, I remember Sleeping Lady, not sure if my memory is from a photo Ava showed me or if from the real thing. Gotcha on the relationship, and much like relationships, I'm left not knowing whether to laugh or cry when looking at Mountain Climbing. I really like the Eskimo. What's the medium? Everytime I sell one of mine, I feel that I'm giving up a child. |

| On the Eskimo ... the face is carved from a spruce burl ... the black ruff, is made from walnut ... the background ruff is birch. It's about life size ... I do small ones, too. Here's one done in a small black spruce burl (The walking Liberty Half is there for a size comparison: given to a friend,) another of a rose bud (also carved from a small burl: called the "Burly Rose,") and one done in ivory with a walnut base with moose hide bottom with two views (sold through an ivory dealer in Juneau.) These were shot with film and then scanned so the photographic quality lacks something to be desired ... | What tools do you use when you carve ivory? Isn't it brittle with age? See, I know nothing about ivory, except where it comes from. |
