We began this journey with Carol Eads, our gardening friend in Seward, Alaska. Carol started her first thread, on October 13, 2007, so she could say good bye to her friends on Dave's Garden. She had an incurable brain tumor, and she was bravely facing a road we all must someday travel.

Through the following months, we all joined her on this incredible journey, picked up friends along the way, and held Carol and each other close as we walked with her, until finally we had to let her go on ahead in May, 2008.

Ava, Carol's sister, had joined in with us and we've come to love our little group, keeping in touch, staying close, knowing that time and distance will not alter wonderful friendships. We've now moved to a new home and we'll continue our journey together right here.

Here are the first threads in our incredible journey, I'll keep adding to them as we go:

#1 http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/779992/

#2 http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/782815/

#3 http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/784258/

You are all welcome to join us if you like, some of you were with us at the beginning and we'd like nothing better than to see you again. We talk of gardens and art and poetry and music. We laugh and we cry with equal intensity. And we have a firm belief in the strength of friendship. It's good to be together again.

Hurray!

(pulling up a chair) Hi Gang!

Well it's a beautiful sunny weekend here and I hope
the sun hits each of our journeyers as we settle into
our old routine in a new cool cube shaped home.

I'm still so happy for Ava. What a well deserved relief.
Hiring Lynn sounds like the answer to many wishes.

all my bulbs are popped out, hyacinth, daffodil, tulip,
narcissus. Of course no flowers yet but that bright
spring green is always sooooo wonderful to behold.

i see the neurosurgeon again tomorrow but the symptoms
have changed and now charging volts down my hamstring
which means sciatic nerve. it's getting worse instead of
better but at the moment I'm rejoicing in wearing a t-shirt
and listening to music with the cabin door open on a sunny
spring smelling world.

Check in everyone so we know ya made it safe & sound.
I'm proud to continue rambling down the rivers & roads with
such fine company and Carol is still and always that really
overly-friendly bird we all have at our shoulder as we wander.

Well, I think we've jumped ahead to Spring here, even though it was only 24 deg. this AM. The grass is green and I had a bunch of bluebirds in the front yard, too. My goodness, but they're bright!

Thanks for making the jump with us. I really hated to move from DG, but there are ongoing battles there and things were getting a little uncomfortable at times. The future there is uncertain, the future here at cubits is not.

I'd like to bring all our threads with us, and hopefully I can do that soon, but right now I'm just going to tread softly.

Soulja, I know that pain very well and I hope you get some instant help in whatever form it takes.

Greening up here too, and I'm loving the 60*, yesterday was beautiful, today seems a little cloudy, but still warm. I have some new Asiatic lilies to plant and I'm itching to play in the dirt.

I sent an invite to all on our current list, most everybody was already here and I hope they'll be checking in soon. I sat up for hours last night reading that very first thread. I guess laughing and crying at the same time is good for the soul.

You all have a good day....I'm going out to check on my little green things!

Hello. I know some of you already. I started 2nd grade in Palmer, Alaska when it was still a territory. Much later we lived at Ketchikan in SE where I saw way too much rain!

When I have time I'll go read Carol's thread that started this group. I don't think I was aware of it until Sharon posted a story about the trip to build the memory garden. She lamented that she couldn't grow lupine because her climate was too dry. They grow wild here where we get less than 10 inches of precip annually, so I collected some seeds for her, and told her that our lupine go dormant after setting seed, but they are always there the next year. So now Sharon grows lupine.

Little green things have been coming up here for a while since we had very little snow this past winter. Big contrast to the winter before when we still had snowdrifts in the yard at this time. My daffys are forming flower heads already! Yesterday I moved some perennials from a shady bed to sunnier places where I hope they will be happy. The lilies had sprouts but hadn't broken ground yet, so I think it was the perfect time to move them. Today I'll grab my shovel and move a few more. But first, I need to go to my scrambled picture files and try to determine just what one of them is. Do you have that problem, too?
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Yep, so Mary's sort of been with us for nearly 2 years, and I'm still lamenting, but only because I can't find last summer's lupine photos. Talk about scrambled picture files...

Glad you joined us, Mary...Just wait till y'all hear about Mary's lambing season, coming right up, I think.

Thanks. Yep, lambing will be starting in about 3 more days, officially, but there are always early arrivals, so the sheep have been moved to a pasture with better access to the barn. The cows however, are the early ones this year, thanks to another neighbor's bull who saw his duty and took advantage of ladies at their moment of weakness. Another one was born this morning. It's a beautiful day to be born!

I am sorry that it was getting uncomfortable over at DG. Since I am unable to view most of the forums there now I see their loss as my gain Hurray!

I have been afraid that the duplication of almost every forum there to here would cause a lot of folks to feel an us against them sort of situation and once that attitude takes hold of a community it is hard to shake it. Sad , really sad, because each site has a lot to offer and everyone should be able to fully enjoy both sites for what they offer.

Personally, I never saw Cubits as a replacement for DG. Cubits has a totally different function. I fear that too many folks jumped ship with the idea they were going to recreate , improve on DG... That is simply not possible.

But there is always room for a bit of competition and the added ability here to monitor and control the participants in a thread such as this one is a good thing.

I think in time things will be fine. I agree that a lot of people jumped ship thinking that Cubits was going to become another DG, but they didn't understand the concept of Cubits. They are two separate places with different visions.

And I'm still cheering DG on, I've invested a lot of writing time on it. You just never know what big companies will do when they make a purchase, and I didn't want to lose our group if things began to fragment.

So we'll be OK.

Yep, the two are different places, but it will be hard to convenience some folks. One of the advantages Dg has it the huge databases that have been developed over the years. Those are valuable tools thanks to the contributors. One thing Cubits will have over DG. Eventually hundreds of databases. They may or may not reach the size of Dg's ones, but they will grow and they will be invaluable.

I been on Dg almost since the beginning. Didn't post for several years at one point before I came back, but since cubits have learned more about folks and their hobbies and passions. There was so much talent at DG that was restrained. Cubits has allowed those habits, talents, and hobbies, to surface and to shine. So much information and knowledge now has a free reign. It awesome.

Somehow, I missed out on the unpleasantness at DG that I've heard people mention (although I always thought that admin was a bit heavy handed). Sure good to see you again, Zany. Cubits is certainly an interesting place; I like the random cubits function, too. But I will keep my DG membership if only for the Plant Files, which was why I joined there in the first place.

Hello all......

I'd like to thank Shar for making this move for us. Things are getting a little shakey over on the other site. Also, through the links that Shar is making available to everyone on the opening post at the top of this thread, maybe our new friends here can get to know my sister and understand the significance of Carol's Journey and how her thoughts and words effected all of us. She was a brave soul to have faced her terminal illness and to share her thoughts about it the way she did. She was very intelligent, very well read, a little crazy and had a great sense of humor. We are all the better for knowing her. I miss her terribly, but at my age, I know that in a few short years, I will be reunited with her and my dear mother on the other side.

Love to all,

Ava

Here is a pic of Carol and Holly, my ex sis-in-law (who passed just recently), back in the good 'ol days, picking crab apples....

AVA! It is so good to see you again.

Carol taught us all a great deal about life, love , sharing and caring. Her Journey made it possible for so many of us to get to know each other and to appreciate our own strengths and weaknesses.

If you are new, I too recommend you read through the beginning of this amazing journey. Then join us as the journey continues for each of us.

We have gotten attached to her in that cube. She wouldn't be our loveable Zany if she loses it.
