The frost is on the pumpkins, if there were any pumpkins out there, but the sun is brightly shining, so it looks like it might be a good start to 2014. Y'all enjoy!

Thanks, and a Very Happy and a Healthy New Year to All.

So glad you're back safely, Sharon.
Dangerous situation in which to push yourself too hard.

What an exceptional, varied and interesting collection of pictures, Toni!
I really liked the torched slaughter house video too;
uplifting for a place of former fear and death.

Interesting "art", Jo Ann, though do still think the context is a bit weird.
Still we only need to be concerned if Sharon wants to start posing her friends and neighbours for art like that.

Oh goodness, Charlie, thank you!! I meant to bring Jo's link with us when we moved here, and totally forgot. Here it is, amazing sculptures by Mueck:

http://www.viralnova.com/ron-mueck-sculptures/

The amazing thing about his work, aside from the technical aspect is that he captures mood and emotion as well as personality instantly. Amazing artist/sculptor. I could just stare at every little pore all day long, every hair, every single wrinkle. His realism is beyond real. So sorry I forgot to move it over last night, but so glad you reminded me this morning. I think that trip yesterday wiped my mind clear of everything but surviving for awhile.

Just goes to show us that true art certainly does not have to be pretty. That always aggravated the daylights out of me, when we had juried shows at school, and the winners were chosen by professional artists, and many were not 'pretty'; the entire community would be up in arms because the pretty little flower over in the corner didn't get any recognition. That's why I keep telling you that real art comes from inside, not so much what you see on the outside, but how it makes you feel as you are creating or as you are viewing. That's also why it's difficult for me to paint what I see; instead I paint what I feel. Jo knows.

Mueck takes it even farther, he creates not only what he sees, but what he feels when he sees it, and also he makes those figures that he creates show their true feelings as well. Hard to put all that into words. Good art isn't about whether you like it or want it to match your living room decor, it's about feelings. Sometimes the position of sculpture will evoke feelings, like Michelangelo's Pieta, but this is the first time I've seen it in contemporary figures. Reminds me a lot of Dorothea Lange's b/w photographs of our grandparents' era. Emotional and very moving.

Happy 2014 from a snot-nosed kid in CO!!

Yea, I've got the crud. It's finally taken good hold of me and I feel like absolute poo. It's snowing right now, was planning on going to the zoo today, but I think that I'm gonna stay inside for the most part. Gonna make some noodle soup with lots of chile (made some home-made enchiladas last night, but the enchilada sauce was too hot for DH, so I had to make up some more beef for tacos for him, which is good 'cuz I had pretty bad heartburn most of the night. LOLL. The sauce was GOOD!) in it 'cuz chile helps with colds. It's out of my ears (thank goodness for that) and now settling into my chest, so now I'm hacking and have no voice. But that means I can't yell at anyone for new years, so I guess that's pretty good.

Yesterday afternoon when I got off work I made a Salvation Army run to do the last of the donations for the 2013 tax year (I write a lot off on taxes.. I have to 'cuz I don't have kids and DINKs get taxed to hell). Dropped off the stuff & saw in the back this most awesomest gaudy NYE hat. I just have to have it. It was the funniest hat on the planet. So I bought it. It was $3 and I wore it all evening when we went here, there, & everywhere (Staples, Dicks sporting goods, World Market, Sprouts). Everyone who saw it started to laugh & smile.. that's the way to bring in the new year!! By making people smile! Uplift their hearts, make them feel good for a minute. Making someone laugh is definitely a great thing. I'll see if I can get a picture of it (or maybe I can find it on google.. nope, after searching for a while 5 minutes, really can't find it exactly, so I'll just have to take pictures of it). But it was great to see everyone giggle and comment on how they love the hat. I don't mind people laughing at me. If I can make someone smile, then I know that their hearts are a little lighter for a little while, and as gloomy as it's been here w/the shooting and the economy & everything, any kind of lifting is a good thing.

*snort* ugh. this sucks. LOLL I hate having a cold.. my throat's all tight & everything. :(

Sharon - So glad that you made it home. Honestly, why didn't you wait a half hour so the sun would set & you could drive not in the setting sun? That's what I do when I have to go west bound during the summer.. I just go into a store or something & kill 1/2 hour then get back on the road. Not gonna try & fight the sun, it's much bigger than I am.

I love those sculptures. He's beyond talented. They look so real, even when they're so ridiculously outsized, or undersized. They're perfect. The coloring, the posturing, everything's perfect. It's quite freaky IMO. Not like our "Satan's Steed" or whatever you want to call that hideous blue horse outside of our airport DIA. I was actually on my way to pick up my old boss at the airport when I saw them installing this horse. The horse has a very horrible history behind it.. he actually killed his first artist! Yes, the sculpture actually killed the artist! It fell on him & crushed him flat, so the artist's son finished it up. It's a beautiful piece as far as realism, but the glowing orange eyes at night terrify children & adults alike. I personally don't think that something this scary should be our ambassador to our city IMO.

Happy New Year, my Blue Garden friends!

Thumb of 2014-01-01/LarryR/bd1297

Snowing here again today. Looks like it might be an all-day thing. Will start undecorating later today.

Toni, that last link about the Denver airport has an interesting video. It's one of those conspiracy theories, of which I'm not a fan, but some of the airport murals in the video do strike me as inappropriate. Air travel is stressful enough without having to see images of dead adults and children and a figure with a gas mask and a sword apparently about to kill a dove. The horse outside is weird enough. What were the people responsible for this airport art thinking?! Thumbs down

Hiya Star!! Happy New Year to you too!

It's an attention getter, Larry. Remember the students who would do anything for attention? Seems like whoever planned the airport needed a dash of attention too. Either that or the commentator needs it.

Sorry, Toni. Maybe tomorrow you will feel better.

Larry - DIA is weird. Colorado is weird. I think it's all the pot smoking. LOLLLLL!! Which, as the whole world knows, is now legal here. Oh brother, seriously? Is there nothing else in the world more interesting to talk about other than pot is legal for sale here? But, after seeing DFW airport, I much prefer DIA. At least there's artwork & stuff here. The city is actually trying to make DIA to a local attraction.. a place that locals will go to for dinner & stuff. There was even talk about installing a string quartet or something! I'm sorry, but having to go through security & either get frisked or nuked, just for dinner? Sure, there's some VERY good restaurants there in the airport, but no restaurant is worth getting frisked or nuked over!!

Just took another nap, feel a bit better. Gonna get some food here, and gonna take it easy. May take dogs to dogpark, but nothing strenuous.

Forgot to answer you, Toni. I don't drive long distances on interstates at night alone. I just don't. So since I had 200 miles of west ahead of me and an entire afternoon, what good would waiting a half hour do? I had to follow the setting sun since a single cloud refused to roll in. The setting sun takes its own sweet time about setting. Look at Louisville on the map and then look at Calvert City. Straight west, all 200 miles of it.

Hope that your health continues to improve, Toni & that the cold goes away quickly. We went grocery shopping this afternoon to get ahead of the coming snowstorm. Had to miss part of the Wisconsin game which made me rather growly. It's the first time I have seen them all year & their QB was injured which fouled things up.

was gonna get indian food for dinner, but they were closed, so ended up at Golden Corral (again) 'cuz I was starving to death. Got lots of veggies this time.. spinach, cabbage, squash, that kind of stuff. Of course had to get 3 mini corn dogs, but for the most part, tried to eat not-as-bad. Not gonna say healthier, but I will say not as bad. Then had to walk it off (ate too much) so ended up at "H-mart" (http://www.hmart.com/) which is one of the biggest Asian supermarkets there is. That place is awesome. If it's asian, you can find it. Picked up some fresh green onions (3 / $1!), some kim chee, gyoza, dried whole shrimp (for my fish), soy sauce, ga soup base (Thai style chicken), and other little stuff. Don't go there often, I get into too much trouble! LOLL!! Now getting ready to load the dogs up & go to the dogpark, need to walk some more. Planning on going to the gym tonight & start up again my weight-loss odyssey. Last year, I lost nearly 30lbs, but gained it all right back when I was going through a LOT of stress in Nov & was consoling myself with lots of cake & sitting around being miserable. This year, not gonna do that. I'm not doing this as a new-years-resolution crap because, let's face it. Most resolutions fail. I'm doing this for my health. My sister had her first heart attack at age 40, which is where I'm sitting now. My father had his first (that I know of) at around 45. I'm not going to do the same thing. I already have heart problems (on top of everything else), but I'm not gonna let that stop me. I'm gonna lose the weight for one reason & one reason only: to go horseback riding! There's a weight limit as to how fat you can be to go horseback riding (not that I would torture a poor horse with my fat butt), and I'm gonna get there! I can do this. I know I can, it's just gonna take some determination and LOTS of sweat! I'm looking at late May for this, so I have 5 months. I figure that if I aim for 2lbs a week loss, which really isn't a heck of a lot, I can do this. That'd be 8lbs a month, 40lbs by June.

Sharon - Ah, ok. Sorry, but putting 200 miles would be nothing for me. :) While we were there in DFW, the car I rented had like 21,600 miles. When I turned it in, it had over 22,000 miles on it. Oops. LOL!! but that's why I got the car w/unlimited miles, too. And I just looked at the map. Especially this time of year, driving that in the afternoon would be a big pain in the patookie considering it's WSW. Driving on I70 here in town has those times of the year. If you look on the map of Denver & look at I70, you can see that, for most of the city, it's pure West, which means in the early morning & late afternoon, it's bumper to bumper due to the rising/setting sun.

Cold's gotten much better. Not coughing as much, not draining as much. Hopefully I'm already on the downside of it, which would be super nice.

Happy New Year everyone. Skye and I spent quite a bit of time cleaning out the garden to get it ready for next year. We also moved in some chickens so they can help fertilize and weed.
Skye is also quite excited about making some seed orders. I sure hope I have the time (and motivation) to make the garden better this year. Last year was not so good; just felt a bit burned out, I guess, with so many other priorities and too much time driving everywhere.
Larry, very good greeting, very sparkly. I actually made it to midnight last night, which does not usually happen!
Glad you made it back safely, Sharon. I hope your next visit with Ethan goes much better.
Time to show Skye how to do some latch hook for a pillow his grandmother gave him. It may be a while before I have time to stop by again, though.

Exactly.

Thanks Vic and Lance. Always good to hear from you , Lance.

Not a speck of Christmas left indoors. Waay too cold to do the outdoors.

Spent some time yesterday cracking "almonds." They're actually the pits of an apricot/almond cross, a great fruit tree. The apricots are large and sweet with just a touch of tang, which is just the way I like them. The almonds are slightly smaller than regular almonds, but taste just as good. About half the pits had two almonds in them, so that was a bonus. I cracked the pits with a vise attached to my workbench. Worked great and didn't damage the nuts like a hammer would.

Good to get weight off now, Toni. When you are in your 70s, it is much more difficult.
