Tell Wilma 'True Grit', Larry. And she can have it. I'll stick to my North Pole Ensemble, thank you very much. Yes, about the specific poem, Mary. I can't remember a Kipling poem that would fit that description, but I enjoyed reading the article. I'm 'bout so cold I'm getting sleepy. Maybe I'll just go into hibernation. It's all mental because my heat is working just fine in the house. My mind knows how cold it is and my body listens to my mind. Daisy is the danged-est cat. I slept late this morning so Daisy got up on the counter where I left the big bag of dried catfood. I was semi awake and on the sofa where I slept last night -- sometimes the sofa is more inviting than my bed -- so I could see Daisy on the counter, but couldn't wake up enough to really be aware of it. So Daisy scooted the bag of food to the edge. Sunshine was on the floor and soon as the bag of cat food was to the edge, Sunshine stood up and pulled it to the floor. Then they both pounced on it, Sunshine tore a hole and Daisy made it bigger. At which point I was very much awake and saved the food. Didn't save the bag though, and lucky for them, the food didn't spill out all over the floor. It's now in a container with a lid and it it's proper place in the cabinet. Which they can't open. I swear those two can make the biggest mess and conspire against me. I'm sure their plan worked well this morning, all they were trying to do is wake me and that is exactly what happened. They probably spent an hour before plotting. It's a conspiracy. |

Been bundled up and out in wind and cold. Bad enough here, can't imagine being in -50F winds. Ran to store and got more bird food and dog food for the stray to eat. Poor thing was all curled up on 4 way corner. Almost thought she was dead at first she was tightly curled up. Gave her whole big can of wet dog food plus some dry and hopefully that will hold her til tomorrow unless somebody else stops to feed her too. Found out at church Sunday one of the ladies there feeds her too when going that way and says Princess which si what we named her loves vienna sausage, but big can of dog food was cheaper than one little can of viennas from local corner store. Brought some more plants in, but may have lost even more. Was such a bad year from all the months of rain ad flooding, things rotted and molded and just never grew and now two-three days of this bitter cold and the few plants that had survived are not probably going to be compost. Worst and what makes me cry is hoping I don't lose the rares and endangered I grow and cultivate to put back around the country. Everything else I can re grow or rebuy, but not them. I usually don't save seed from them. Where they fall, I let germinate. I let nature take its course and than transplant seedlings to new homes to grow. Been dripping pipes like crazy. trailers in the south just not made for these temps. I have 3 pregnant cats, little wren birds, toads, lizards and squirrel all hiding up under trailer and all living together in harmony so far during this weather. Funny as all get out. ![]() |

I had a cat growing up that came inside or went outside pretty much on his own terms except he was always sent outside at night. Now and then we'd forget to turn him out before bedtime, and he would take a stroll down the piano keys around 2 am. By the time Mom got to him he was standing in front of the door ready to leave under his own power rather than being "booted" out the door. Pets do have their own way of prompting us to do what we are expected to do. ![]() |

I didn't see the poem either Mary but it was a fun link to read ![]() Lucy, dd in PA was 43 this morning and raining but it's going to 2 tonight so the driving tomorrow could be like an ice rink. The wind is brutal. Light is on in the well house, both wood stoves are cranking, and I'm baking a chicken for supper. Temperature goes up to just below freezing and then down again. The ploughed snow, at the end of the driveway, is freezing and has to be chopped up to remove. Heavier than wet snow. The piles of snow, already at the sides of the driveway, have a foundation of ice stabs (previously chipped off the driveway). This supports their steepness. Have to get the snow off the roof of the van again, because it partially melts and then refreezes into a block which eventually flies off when driving. I can really appreciate why the Inuit have numbers of words for snow. ![]() ![]() |

Whoo hooooo it's up to 5* with winds at 14 mph. Sunshine's got her legs crossed but refuses to go outside. It will be near 50 by Friday. I don't think she can hold it that long. Here are the conspirators at work: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Oh boy, Charlie. I think I'd just go to bed and sleep through it all. Might be gone when you wake up. Pretty, though, pristine. |

Sharon, cute photos, very funny about the bag of food. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wow, Charlie, you sure do have a lot of snow there! ![]() |

It sure looks like Sunshine is whispering in the cat's ear, doesn't it? LOL |

the poem is "The Absent Minded Beggar" . The link is just under the picture of the house (Bateman?) where Kipling lived. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. More ramblings at http://thegatheringplacehome.myfastforum.org/forum54.php |

The poem is "The Absent Minded Beggar" . The link is just under the picture of the big house (Bateman?) where Kipling lived. How's you like to try heating that house in winter weather? I counted 10 chimneys! Kipling must have made a good living writing! Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. More ramblings at http://thegatheringplacehome.myfastforum.org/forum54.php |

Sharon, love the conspirators at work. You need to train Sunshine to use the indoor facilities. ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj-Ecw0Vdak Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens: Come on in and take the tour! Check out the photos! The Absent Minded Beggar WHEN you've shouted "Rule Britannia," when you've sung "God save the Queen," When you've finished killing Kruger with your mouth, Will you kindly drop a shilling in my little tambourine For a gentleman in khaki ordered South? He's an absent-minded beggar, and his weaknesses are great— But we and Paul must take him as we find him— He is out on active service, wiping something off a slate And he's left a lot of little things behind him! Duke's son—cook's son - son of a hundred kings (Fifty thousand horse and foot going to Table Bay!) Each of 'em doing his country's work (and who's to look after their things?) Pass the hat for your credit's sake, and pay—pay—pay ! There are girls he married secret, asking no permission to, For he knew he wouldn't get it if he did. There is gas and coals and vittles, and the house-rent falling due, And its more than rather likely there’s a kid. There are girls he’s walked with casual. They’ll be sorry now he’s gone, For an absent-minded beggar they will find him, But it ain’t the time for sermons with the winter coming on We must help the girl that Tommy’s left behind him! Cook's son—Duke's son—son of a belted Earl Son of a Lambeth publican—it's all the same to-day ! Each of 'em doing his country's work (and who's to look after the girl?) Pass the hat for your credit's sake, and pay—pay—pay ! There are families by thousands, far too proud to beg or speak, And they'll put their sticks and bedding up the spout, And they'll live on half o' nothing, paid 'em punctual once a week, 'Cause the man that earns the wage is ordered out. He's an absent-minded beggar, but he heard his country call, And his reg'rnent didn't need to send to find him! He chucked his job and joined it—so the job before us all Is to help the home that Tommy's left behind him ! Duke's job—cook's job—gardener, baronet, groom. Mews or palace or paper-shop, there's someone gone away! Each of 'em doing his country's work (and who's to look after the room?) Pass the hat for your credit's sake, and pay—pay—pay ! Let us manage so as, later, we can look him in the face, And tell him—what he'd very much prefer That, while he saved the Empire, his employer saved his place, And his mates (that's you and me) looked out for her. He's an absent-minded beggar and he may forget it all, But we do not want his kiddies to remind him That we sent 'em to the workhouse while their daddy hammered Paul, So we'll help the homes that Tommy left behind him ! Cook's home—Duke's home—home of a millionaire, (Fifty thousand horse and foot going to Table Bay !) Each of 'em doing his country's work (and what have you got to spare?) Pass the hat for your credit's sake, and pay—pay—pay ! Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens: Come on in and take the tour! Check out the photos! As a gardener: When planning for a year, I plant corn. Larry, I would if I could teach that to Sunshine. When you get Oliver trained, then you tell me how you did it!! Wow that dog in the video!! Just wow. And thanks for bringing the poem to us. I have forgotten it, forgotten much of Kipling, thanks Mary for bringing the poem to the front. |

My parents' one cat & dog conspire to get cookies out of the cabinet. In theory, the cat can't jump onto the counter (too fat). So the cat gets the dog to come over, jumps on the dog's back (Chow chow, so tall enough), then onto the counter. She then opens the cabinet and pulls out the cookies and throws them on the floor. She then jumps down & the two eat the cookies. Mother's caught them doing this 3 times now. The ambient temps were supposedly like 10degs, but I was running around brooming off the driveway w/the shopbroom w/o a jacket wearing just my short-sleeve blouse, pants, & Ariet boots. Felt VERY warm in the sun, no wind (thank goodness). Just brought my light jacket with me, I don't know if I'll need it tonight when I get off work. Charlie - It's amazing how many places it's not the law to clean off your car of all snow! I know that's the law in NY to clear your car of all snow, but here in CO, it's not. I just shake my head when I see someone driving a "snowmobile".. that's a vehicle (usually a minivan or SUV) with just a tiny clearing in front of the driver on the windshield that you can tell they used a credit card or something non-conventional to scrape it clear. I *never* see anyone clearing off the top of their vehicle, the hood, the bumper.. heck, I get funny looks when I clear the tire wells! But I clear my car 100% so I don't throw a ton of snow/ice. Star - Can't you or someone take that poor stray home???? OMG, I wouldn't have left her there, I would have brought her home and kept her in the garage until either 1) I could find her a home or 2) could get her into a shelter. Poor poor poor thing... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you. Love those pictures, Sharon. I think Sunshine is a very kind girl. Great dog, Larry, but I'll let someone else use the toilet next. Interesting and confusing (to me) poem, Larry. I do know Lambeth itself. My dad, maternal grandfather and maternal uncle were borough politicians (not publicans) there. Think that after amalgamation, Lambeth no longer exists. Individuals aside, I currently agree that colonialism was about both controlling resources and creating markets. |

Crossed. Toni, great point. I don't think it's a legal requirement here. Flying snow, and especially flying ice, are as dangerous as anything else flying off/out of a car/truck. |

Just checked the temp in the root cellar. It's down to 38 degrees. The water main and canned goods are in there, so I'll have to be sure to check periodically to make sure the temp doesn't drop below freezing.
