Really like the idea, as Star says, of not using garden herbicides/pesticides. Very creative, Larry. Sunshine's a funny girl, Sharon. Pebbie wouldn't use the cat box if anyone was in the room. Not that anyone, in our house, was ever bushwhacked when they went to the washroom. |

Rain with thunder & lightning this afternoon. Melting much of the snow. |

Cute Auto, Larry. Poor Sharon. We were without electricity earlier in the week. We always keep flashlights or lanterns scattered through the house ALL the time. Out here in the country, you never know when it is going to go out and left in the dark. We have a small generator but it only runs the basics. Muddy mess here, too, Sharon. The dog has to have his boots on but he still splashes mud up on his legs and body. It sounds like the rain is not over yet. Sunshine tomorrow, hopefully. Truthfully, it was easier on me when the ground was frozen enough so I did not have to use the boots on the pup. I vote for a freeze again. Just enough to eliminate the mud. Sigh! They are calling for wind gusts of 35mph. High of 43 today and low of 27 tonight. Quite a difference from earlier in the week. Have a good weekend, y'all. Oma |

Today was gorgeous... spent most of the day outside. Took all the rest of the Christmas light down, put away, all organized. It's all prepared for next Christmas season. Bad thing was that the dogs were outside with us (in the low 50s & very sunny). I was working on the lights on the fenceline & DH was taking down the lights on the gutters. All of the sudden, both dogs went absolutely bonkers and, streaking as absolutely fast as he could, the one neighbor's cat Milo/Tigger/Tiger (no idea what they're calling this poor cat now) runs as absolutely as fast as he can, poofed out to the max as much as he can be. Dogs were chasing after the poor kitty and I'm chasing after the dogs, screaming at them to come back to me. They did finally come back to me, no harm done to the kitty. The kitty ran back to his home, but did he run inside? No. Makes me so mad that the neighbor just can't keep the kitties inside.. "oh it's too hard". Bull. Just too lazy. Oh well. Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you. Sharon, a flashlight by the bed saves the toes, knees and sometimes far more than that! We have a warm spell, well up to 40 today with rain and melting. Everything is a mess! Our driveway is full of compacted snow and ice, it has water over the top and is melting. Thankfully running off, so maybe by the time we have freezing temperatures again, it will have some exposed gravel. I've got a meatloaf in the oven, and it is smelling very good! We have nibbled all day so I am not very hungry, but Hubby will be. He always is. I saw this video and picked it off the internet for you. Ladies, you know how men suffer, and how they think we exaggerate, well, take a look when a couple of guys go through some simulated labor pains, with their wives observing, supporting. http://faithtap.com/874/christian-dads-experience-what-it-fe... Their ordeal lasted less than an hour, we should have been so lucky! Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. More ramblings at http://thegatheringplacehome.myfastforum.org/forum54.php |

Sharon, no electricity is a chore, even in the best of times and best of weather. ![]() Our bird nesting season won't start until late March. It's always wonderful to see the male gold finches start to change from olive green to canary yellow. Spring is just around the corner when the birds start getting their summer colors! Our weather has warmed and we're a muddy mess, too. The snow is about half melted and the this coming week should see high temps in the 40s for the most part so we'll have all the snow gone soon. It's much too soon for the warm temperatures to last, but we do enjoy a mid-winter warm up when it happens. I've recently developed an interest in fermenting foods - so I started a batch of sauerkraut today and a small jar of mixed veggies (carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and butternut squashes) to see how it turns out. It will be fun to see the end result. |

It hasn't been a bad day, even after all the midnight activities in the dark. Flashlights I have, Mary, but it's really a chore to hold a flashlight and clip Sunshine to her cable while holding the door partly open and hoping Daisy doesn't jump through it when she gets a wild hair to annoy Sunshine. Nothing she likes better than to swat SS as she goes out the door. But I was really tired this morning so I haven't done a lot. Pretty day, though, and about 50 which is more like normal and seems to be in the forecast for the next few days. I love sauerkraut, Jill, and it's really nutritious. Easy to make too. I have one cousin who is my age and we grew up sort of together and have remained close. I say sort of because she lived about 10 miles away and until high school we went to different schools. But we were always together for family gatherings and frequent overnights. Our Moms were sisters. She called today and her husband had passed away suddenly this morning. It was like reliving my situation of about 6 years ago, a little unnerving and very sad. So I've spent some time talking with her today. She lives in Lexington, about 300 miles from me. The funeral is Tuesday, the day I have an annual check up scheduled . . . decisions decisions. I'm thinking she'll need me more later than she will this week. (Basing that on my own experience.) Still it was and continues to be a sad time. |

Sharon, I am very sorry to hear of your cousins husbands death. ![]() |

Thanks so much, Margaret. I worry about my cousin, she isn't quite as tough as nails as I am. But their son lives very near her, so he'll be there for her. |

Larry... Do they have a chocolate factory?? ![]() ![]() Looks like it might be a nice place to visit. A place to gain more knowledge. Never can get enough of that. Just wish it would stay all in my head and not fall out when I sleep. ![]() Couldn't live there though. No meat. I could handle the vegetarian diet for a week or two, but because I have below, low blood pressure, I have to intact red meat every so often or body starts collapsing. Plus I think they would kick me out if they saw me sneaking my microwave bacon and vienna sausages. ![]() Very interesting reading. I went around checking out the links. Enjoyed reading the one about permaculture. I really liked his ideas. Especially the one about thinking up, down and all around when doing any building or designing. Hopefully, this spring, summer plan to do some building and redesigning and he did open my eyes to things to consider which would benefit not only me, saving a lot of work, but better for my plants and the wildlife around. So often we do just plant and build, helter skelter. ![]() ![]() Oma... I don't mind links to info or pics of birds or other critters. I enjoy it, so feel free to post em. My problem is I get to looking at the sites and next thing I know the whole day is gone and nothing is done here. Oh well, there always tomorrow to catch up on housework. ![]() Toni. Glad ya had a good dinner. I love German food. Actually some of the healthiest food I ever ate. Lots of meat, but even more veggies dishes. I miss living there. It on my bucket list to go back and at least visit again. Sharon... So sorry about the lose of your cousins husband. I agree. You'll probably be needed later, best to get you to the doc. I'd keep your appointment. You do nobody any good if you not healthy yourself. Glad to see folks have power back on. Made it the corner store yesterday to get a few groceries and some fat back. Gonna go out here in a bit and start rendering it down. We'll see what kind of a mess I can make. Be assured there will be one. ![]() It had rained here all day friday, was bundled up to head out door and said wow! Had to turn around and walk back in a shed a few layers. Was 64F out at 5 am. Beautiful star lit sky, few clouds and a warm breeze. Too bad it didn't last. Got back put out bird seed and than the skies opened up and the winds. Raced like a fool to try and get computer and other important stuff unplugged. Spent the day watching cooking shows. Those folks always keep everything so nice and neat. Not me. I can boil water and use every pan and dish in the house. Good thing I don't mind washing dishes. ![]() Than I tried to read a new book. Ended up throwing it down in disgust. Not sure what the original classic was, but this author tried to remake it. It was going along ok. Had the setting of Zeus and the other gods and that time period setting done well and than he had to go and put 20th century cuss words in. Those folks didn't use language like that, not today's slang back then. Totally ruined the book for me. ![]() It would have been nice to have been able to get out and enjoy the warm weather yesterday. Ground is finally soaking the water up. Feel bad for all them folks flooded in FL., but have a feeling that is just the beginning of what is going to be major floods now around the country, once the snow and ice starts melting. Temps are dropping outside and in few hours it will be back in the 30's. Where will I be then? Under the covers! ![]() Oh Sharon, get you one of them little think they called LED flash lights. They are small but powerful. Just takes two AA batteries. I use mine all the time, not only for power failures, but because I am always going in and out in dark. It light weight, like holding a fat pen in your hand and it has a little strap to hold it with. Great when you have your hands full or want to do something. They like 3 to 4 bucks usually. |

Sharon, I'm sorry to hear of your cousin's loss of her husband. It's never easy. I agree, you will be of more help to her later. And as for the light, get a headlamp. Small, light weight, on elastic bands, mine has high and low beam and will also blink (for warning in an emergency?), runs on cheap little batteries, and leaves both hands free to work. Mine has elastic bands that go around and over your head. They would be probably be available in sporting goods departments, a farm store, or most certainly online. Mine just says LED HEADLIGHT on the bands. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. More ramblings at http://thegatheringplacehome.myfastforum.org/forum54.php |

A bit nippy outside, but the sun is shining. Hope it keeps up because we are in for another round of cold blasting Tuesday thru Thursday. I hear my woodpecker out hollering and the chippies are having their morning chat with the other communities of them here. When up and feed Princess. I tell ya she works that corner for sure. When I pull over I always wonder if folks think I am dumping dogs instead of feeding them. I swear that dog has to belong to somebody. Her coat is too well cared for. She has the long blonde and almost white golden hair like on a collie. It has no tangles. She doesn't have the first burr in her fur and a person can't even walk these woods without getting covered in stickers and prickers. Maybe she just doesn't get enough food where she at. Don't know but for now she is the community mascot and everybody will continue to feed her including me. ![]() |

Sorry about the death in the family, Sharon. It is so difficult to endure. I worry about my brother in N.Mexico. He is 87 but still goes strong. His wife is only a couple of years older than I an, but is not in good health. Anyone watch the ice skating on TV? It was grand & they do more difficult stunts each year. |
|

I have 2 or 3 LED flashlights, not a problem. Just try multitasking while holding one in the total blackness of a winter night while the cat you're trying to watch is blacker than the night and the dog you're trying to clip a line to is dancing around the entire room. It's a small problem. Plus I was trying to hold on to my cell phone throughout. Gorgeous day. Not sure yet what I'll do with it, but it's for sure I'll be outside more than in. Enjoy!! |

Sharon, very sorry to hear of your cousin's husband's death. Still, sounds like you need to go for the check-up. As you say it's likely in the near future that your cousin will need your support. From whatever perspective, after death, it's hard on the bereaved rather than on the deceased. |

Thanks to all of you, I didn't respond earlier because I've been on the phone with her this afternoon. Her brother and his wife have arrived and she has tons of friends there around her. Some other cousins who live in Louisville are bringing our two aunts to the service, so we both feel that later will be the time when she needs a visit from me. Our two aunts aren't blood aunts because they were married to our mothers' brothers, but it is important to her that they are able to come for visitation. It's only about 75 miles from Louisville to Lexington. Neither of us has very many relatives left on either side. She will be brave for them. Truth is, when something like this happens the first week or so is filled with family and friends and then suddenly all is quiet again. It's the quiet time that's hardest. Today is beautiful and somewhere in the 50s. I have on a long sleeved T shirt and that's enough even when I take Sunshine out. |

True Larry, at this age. It's 52 already and gray gloomy skies. I'd really like to be outside doing something, but with the mud, not so much. So picking up clutter inside it will be. I see little shreds of Bear-toe and Tiger-toe around Sunshine's bed, evidently she thought they weren't mangled enough already. Y'all have a really good day! |
