Thank you Toni I am glad you like April. I will tell her what you said. Yes, I talk to my plants and my birds all the time. Charle, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel thinks I am a nut case because I am standing there, back towards him talking to the plants in the bird room and he thinks I should be looking at him when I am talking. It is a real funny sight looking at his face when I turn around.

The backyard birds are rather scarce here too but the reason is because of the red-tailed hawks. I would like to see them all leave...wish I had more crows to fight with them. I had to smile when you said concolor firs....I look out my door onto a half a field of them. We have a Christmas Tree Farm and all we have are Douglas Fir, concolor Fir, and Norway Spruce. We have a few regular trees but not many. We just finished our busy time. Thank God.

I raise Black PussyWillow and the little birds love that bush because it stays green and keeps its leaves most of the year from early Spring until the heavy snows come. Another month and they will be bare and ready to show the beginning of their catkins. They have a deep burgundy stem in the winter that is gorgeous when the leaves fall. Their catkins are black and smaller than the regular pussy willow.

See what happens when you tell me I should join in the conversation. I do not know when to shut up. Time to go NOW.

No no no don't go!!! I want a black pussy willow right now!!

JB, we talk about everything here, even about the mayor in Toronto and Charlie (SunnyBorders) knows all about him. So you just go ahead and talk about whatever you want and if we get into an argument, I get to stop it and I always win. Heh.

We talk about world news and school kids and all the good and bad and everything in between. Not a problem. So talk!

I'm getting a little antsy because the guy is still on my roof and I haven't heard a sound in several minutes. You reckon he's frozen stiff up there?

I just opened a new bottle of Merlot and I am going to have a small glass or two before I eat leftover sauerkraut and pork from yesterday. My daughter is like me, she always cooks for 20 when only 15 are coming. We had a fun dinner yesterday with the oldest being 89 and the youngest just 6 weeks. 10 adults and 2 little girls. One of which I am enjoying (the 5 year old). She is taking riding lessons which I try to attend and watch each week but I missed it today because it got dark early and I do not drive in the dark anymore. Her instructor has been a friend for years and she is just great teaching kids. This little one posts and does her figure 8's like a big girl. I am so proud of her.
Of course horses and plants are my passions. That is another story. I must get out of here and stay out. Nite.

Too many cats!!
Jacquie - *JEALOUS!!!* I'd love to have a field full of trees like that! Seriously! Beautiful!! Most firs won't grow here, too dry (high plains desert). Everywhere had Norway & Fraiser firs for sale, but they need cool & moist & I have hot & dry. So they won't work. And it's hilarious on how you can have a conversation with your critters.. but what's worse if you argue with them.. and you lose... you can have a full conversation with one of my cats & he'll be more than happy to converse with you. Zeus is VERY talkative and is more than happy to tell you about his day, the other cats' day, the fact that the food bowls are not 100% full, the dogs smell.. you know, cat things. And just looked up black pussy willow. Definitely not something I can grow.. looks like it's a temperate rainforest style plant. DEFINITELY not something I could grow.

Sharon - Go check on him? They shouldn't have taken more than an hour to install a dish, considering you already have the dish there!

Had to have a new dish, an HD dish. And he had to move it from the old spot. The roof is slick with snow, too. He's down now and is installing the receiver.

Jacquie . . . I desperately need your Merlot!!

Also Jacquie, great about the little girl and horses!

It's getting dark now. The wind is blowing. If he's back up there again and frozen solid, not a thing I can do to help. And yes, he's back up there again.
I dunno.
Don't ask.
Maybe he just likes the view from my roof.

Hi Vicki! Yep, it feels so good to have a puter again. Was 9 months with no vechile and a little over a year with no puter. In between having to take a break from making seed packets for the piggies seed swap and finally starting to go down my list and start revisting my favorite cubit places. Don't worry soon will be over to visit Heart Strength. Got alot to catch up on there too.

Sharon... I would go check on him too. Maybe he done slid off or something. Just holler up, don't you try and see what he up too, especially since it getting dark.

I can hear him pounding on something.
At least he's alive. My neighbors would be yelling if he'd fallen or slid down the roof. You can bet my neighbors watch everything.

Bread and Butter Vicki. I was thinking same thing about the cocoa.

Sharon maybe good thing wind blowing that way he can make sure it not gonna blow off somewhere.

Wind blowing like crazy here too now. Arctic blast finally arriving. Sounds like freight trains going by outside. Just praying that no more trees come down. All this rain ground is over soaked and trees here have shallow roots and come down easy.

Just hope after all this time it works right from the start.

Other than those programs I don't watch much Tv. I read. Don't care what the book about I will read it. Of course don't ask me what it was about afterwards. Fast as I finish one it on to the next. Tv I can do without, books nope. No way. I have a lot of days where that all I do. I'll read on avg two books a day have been known to make it through three. When I have gone through all my books, than I start over again. They stillgood after reading four or five times, than I will trade or sell them and get me new ones.

Hated reading as a kid, because I was forced too, now it one of my greatest pleasures. Thumbs up

You guys have been chatting up a storm today. Blinking Hilarious! Sharon your on a witty roll today... Hilarious!

I have been busy taking down the tree and decorations, got everything put away for another year. Hurray! So nice to have everything back in place in the living room.

Toni, we get lots of cold in the winter but summers are hot, dry and windy, White Spruce (Picea glauca) does great, and Subalpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa), large trees but it will take many years for them to outgrow your space. I also see lots of smaller spruce trees, sorry I don't know the name of them. Shrug!

I'm a reader too Ella - I got 7 books for Christmas. LOVE to read. We didn't have television when I was a child so books were my entertainment. All my children are readers too as well as my hubby.

We are under a severe wind warning until 6 am tomorrow morning. Crying They are calling for downed powered lines and trees Crying Crying

Son in law Brad flew into Detroit this afternoon and has to drive from there to Canada and said the snow is terrible. I've been reading about Winter Storm Hercules. Yikes!

When I was a kid, punishment for me was to take away my books & make me watch TV. To this day, I really dislike TV. I'll watch something while I'm eating dinner but otherwise it's off. Been w/o satellite/cable now for .. 3? years (I think 2010) and love the fact I don't have that bill. I have my books & my Kindle / iBook on my phone in case I'm where I don't have my books. Love it.

Margaret - Spruces do quite well here for the most part. Blue spruces are native here, but I already have one of those and I like having major variety. That's why I try to not have doubles of anything unless it's something REALLY special.

Everyone on the eastern side of the country - please stay warm & safe! Looks like that storm is REALLY gonna be a major one! Stay inside, don't go on the roads unless it's an emergency, have extra water & food available, plus candles & blankets & meds! Meanwhile, I'll be outside in a T-shirt taking down Christmas decorations... Whistling Whistling Whistling Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Like that verb, "undecorate", Larry.
Carol and I are going to start to using it.

Read Toni's article on DIA.
Interesting, but didn't fully understand the content.
Too much mysticism and symbolism for me.

I also read a fair bit, but usually on-line, and always non-fiction.
Sure wouldn't worry about talking too much; some of us can talk the leg off a donkey.

Very cold here;
this afternoon it was -2°F, -20°F with wind chill.
Went bottling.
Actually got a cold headache.

Am sure Brad knows how to handle the driving conditions, Vic.
Think snow's much preferable to ice.

We have ice under the snow, so have to pay attention to it.

Saw Anchor Man 2;
think it's nowhere near as good as the first one.

Re installer: also amazing the great job the hydro and arborist crews did here.
Apparently everyone now has their power back on.
Another case of admiration for those in the front line, if not for those that run the show.

Crossed.

Re the falling ice.
Noticed the ice often slips in big chunks off spruces and the like.
Know such trees are adapted to resist branch snow/ice damage.

There's no ice left on the deciduous tree branches, but quite a few are broken and dangling.

They're talking about a 50 million dollar clean-up after the ice storm, just in Toronto, and 25 million dollar to "restore the tree canopy" there.

Everything's good!! Took me the last hour to learn how to do the remote. Whew. The guy said, 'What's your favorite channel/'

I said, '360'.

He said, 'Huh?'

So I repeated 360 and he said I was the first person to ever tell him the favorite channel was a news station. Ha. It's the only channel I knew. Anyway, everything is working so I guess it's just fine. My daughter will like it anyway and that's what matters. Like most of you, I prefer books.

It's been a very long day and I had to put Sunshine in the back room for the duration because she would have either eaten the little TV guy or she would have licked him to death, so she lived in the back room for the entire afternoon since 1 p.m. and now it's almost 7. She did so good, such a good girl.

Star, I believe apricots need at least 300 hours of chilling temps, usually between 35 and 45 degrees. If you live in northern Alabama, I think you'll usually get at least that many hours. My wife, daughter and I lived in Huntsville, AL for seven years in the 1970s. I'm sure it got cold enough there. If you live further south, I'd give it a shot anyway. The worst that can happen is that you won't get much fruit.

Toni, I've been ordering from Stark Bros. for decades and have never had a problem. Actually, only 15% of the watchdog ratings were negative. Great lights! Did you actually climb up on the roof for the zigzag effect?

Minus 15 here tonight. By Sunday night we're down to minus 20 and daytime temps below zero. So cold my fingers hurt, even with my best gloves on. Will have to shorten our dog walks.
