Too many cats!!
just got out of bed. This morning, woke up miserable. Throat was super tight, snorting & snotting, coughing up crud. DH is sick too, so he stayed home & is working from home. 52degs right now, getting ready to go to Costco and do some shopping (need litter & stuff). Should be working on Christmas lights, but I'm just really just not into it. Feel bleh.

For heaven's sake, Toni, STOP! Don't do anything that is not absolutely necessary for the next 3 days! As if! I know it's hard to slow down when your normal life is lived at 90 mph, but please try!

Mary's right, Toni. You have no need to push yourself so hard. Once you use up a lifetime of energy, it's gone.

These nasty winter colds are awful! Toni, I hope you feel better soon.

Our winter weather has turned nasty cold - it was minus 12 last night - and only at 15 today so far with a stiff wind. Our snow added up to about 4 inches, but it was only 12 degrees when it came down, so it's not wet or slushy or even trying to turn to ice yet. It's just white. We ducked the worst of this last system, but we passed it along to you folks east of here, and I hear it's much worse for you. Sorry 'bout that!

We survived our New Year's Eve party with the grandkids just fine. They are getting bigger and much easier to co-exist with. We make memories each year, but now that everyone is 7 or 8 and older, everyone will remember the same memories! I always think the older ones will stop coming but that hasn't happened yet. I think they have a well-bonded cousins group. Thumbs up

Lance... Wish I would have known last week. Auburn university was looking for a director for their Fish and Aqua permaculture departments.

Have you tried BP. Ya know since the big oil dump down here in the gulf, they were hiring Marine folks all over the place to study and help with testing and such of the seafood. You need to look at Miss, Ga Gulf Keys, Al. Gulf Shores and Florida.

Re chemical heating pads, think you said it well, Lance.
It reminds me of how much I loved teaching Chemistry.

I found measuring the heat absorbed/released in breaking/forming bonds (calorimetry) was always a big student crowd pleaser;
that because it allowed the kids to generate their own data and to compare their own results, with expectations, in a quantitative way.

I never intended to become a high school teacher, Lance, and I still feel I have a much more fundamental understanding of the Physical Anthropology I studied and taught in universities. The Physical Science and the Chemistry I taught in high school came later. Still unlike many adults, I never thought it was just the job of the kids to learn and I'd much rather be "the first among equals" in learning, which is certainly feasible in a senior high school science class. This may not reflect accepted educational philosophy but it wins the kids over to what you love; namely, the academic subject (at least in the case of a science). I think it inspires their interest and confidence. The most academic of students (whom it was always a great pleasure to interact with) will learn in any learning environment; many students, however, need to be able to identify, in some way or other, with the teacher. Identifying with the subject comes later.

Spent years being promised tenure. Then cut my financial losses and went to the Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto.

Starlight--windshield cover is supposed to protect against frost. According to catalog of 'Whatever Works' you cover with it a night before cold weather. Could have used it before this storm, but it wouldn't protect the rest of the car.

Temp high today was 13° 2 degrees lower now. Take care of yourself

Toni, although I realize that cats need litter.

Was -11°F here, this morning.
A little bit warmer now.

Heard a thump on the roof last night.
The loose locust tree branch hasn't fallen through the other branches, so thinking it was roof ice expanding.

They're talking about cryoseism in Toronto, as in "icequakes".
New on me.
It's the very rare situation where a sudden drop in temperature causes ground water to freeze; the expansion then cracks the soil and rock.
Some folk are saying they've heard the loud noise and shaking of the ground that this causes.
Read one guy saying his house was shaking.

New names for old things, Charlie. I've seen where that happened, but didn't know a word for it. Interesting.

I worry about homes that might be without heat, older folks who have no one to help them . . it is a worrisome time with all this unusual weather. It's cold here too, so much so that my fingers are chattering and I haven't even been outside in hours.

Making spaghetti. That'll warm me up!

Wow, y'all have been going like gangbusters today!

Went to Costco & got litter, then went to Big Lots to see what kind of Christmas crap they had on sale. I got more than I bargained for.. the entire STORE was on sale 50% off. They're closing this particular Big Lots. Can't sale that I blame them.. this particular store wasn't very good and was always a mess, plus most things weren't really labelled right. I'd had a few problems with that store, so, while I'm sad to see the people possibly lose their jobs, I'm not too sad to see that store go. Something else will go in there, no problem. It's in a plaza with a Hobby Lobby & a Safeway, so there'll be something in there soon probably. Then went to Safeway & picked up way more than I expected there too.. I went there for orange juice & toilet paper (had coupons & they were on sale).. got some cheese too (on sale) and Danish Butter Cookies (can't help myself, but I've only had 2 cookies!!). Got some lunch then came home & started tearing down Christmas lights. I knew I wasn't gonna get too much accomplished. Got started too late. I did get all the arches (over the driveway and over the sidewalk) down, wrapped up in duct tape, and put away for the season. Now I need to go to Home Depot & pick up some totes 'cuz the totes I used this past season just basically fell apart. They were so cheaply made... Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling But tonight's sunset was absolutely spectacular.

Sitting on the couch for a little bit .. after dinner we ended up going to Home Depot. hit the jackpot there with clearanced out LED Christmas lights. Bought like $60 worth at 75% off. So I think I may have enough lights for next year. LOLLL Then went got some FroYo, then Walmart. Got home about 945 and then started to chop up some boneless pork ribs to prep for tomorrow & Sunday's dinners. Got done about 1040 (about 6lbs of meat to dice up), so finally got to relax for a bit. Took this picture of Nemesis & Conan on DH's lap. He's so cute... the grey thing to the right of Conan is actually Oracle's butt.

Cold's taken hold again. I don't like this. I can go for hours w/o feeling bleh and then it just hits me like a ton of bricks. Annoying as anything.

Everyone stay warm!!! OMG, this is a cold cold cold year... today it was 62 degs here and it's supposed to start snowing at around 5am Saturday.

Up too early this morning. Woke up at 315 after going to bed at about 1230.. had to go to the bathroom. Got back to bed, saw Nike was having problems breathing & was very lethargic. Got him in the bathroom right now full of steam & Vicks VapoRub as I used to have a kitty that was asthmatic & he would have bouts of this during the winter. I swear that Nike is Osiris reincarnated.

That was Osiris. He passed away in 2010 from Lymphatic cancer right after Wolfgang died from the same thing. He was only 5 years old. I miss him so much, and I swear Nike is him re-incarnated. Same mannerisms, same klutziness... just the major size difference. Osiris was HUGE, almost the same size as my Zeus. But Nike's tiny.

So good wishes are requested, if I may please...

Our winter storm watch for tomorrow has turned into a winter storm warning with possible accumulations of 8 inches by Sunday night. Of course this might not happen because weather has a way of changing it's mind here. But I'm on the northernmost edge of the area affected, and even if the pattern moves more northward, I'm still right in its path. That's the problem of living in the middle of the road. You get a little bit of everything sometime along the way.

It's not so cold today, but the wind is beginning to bite. I can hardly wait. I am so glad I got that heat/ac unit changed.

Blessings to you and your kitty, Toni.

Stay warm!!

Toni, I'm going to say it again: slow down! Your body needs rest to fight the bug! I hope poor Nike is better now and that his breathing problem is temporary. Your sunset was truly spectacular!

15 here this morning, with a breeze. I'm not sure when a breeze becomes a wind, but I can still see the individual blades on the ornamental windmill. We were supposed to get some snow yesterday or last night. Didn't. The sky has a lot of clouds, moving quickly from north to south. Some are showing a lot of pink, others are just gray. Light from the rising sun has the snow on the Elkhorn mountains looking nice and pink. I need to check the weather map. This I do know: we have had enough wind overnight to clear out the fog that has lingered for the past few days.

For those of you digging out from under the snowstorm, or bracing for the next one, please be careful.

Question authority, guide in wisdom
Thanks for all the job suggestions, everyone. I am certainly keeping my options open and applying for a variety of positions for which I think I can do well. Virginia does have a teaching certificate requirement, but not sure if that is also for substitutes. I am teaching biology again this semester for the local community college, but it is just one course. They actually called me, so it seems once someone knows my abilities, they call me back. The challenge is getting in the door, or getting noticed in the pile of people available. If I could travel overnight, I would most likely have a position with a consulting firm that I have worked for, but can't do that given family responsibilities.
Hope your kitty does well, Toni. Wonderful sunset pictures, as well.
It was about 19F here this morning when I checked, probably a bit colder earlier. Nice day for a walk outside, feeling the brisk air stimulate the cheeks! All a matter of perspective, I suppose.
Charlie, I was expecting a full explanation of activation energy, heat release through state changes, exothermic reactions and the rest! Oh well, maybe simpler is better!
I tip my hat to you. Hurray!

Lance, here in KY you can sub without the certification, however I think they require that you be working toward that certification if you are subbing. I am sure different states have different requirements. Glad you have that one class going anyway. That's a foot in a door.

well, looks like Nike is an asthmatic kitty, just like Osiris was. after being in the steamy bathroom for over 2 hours wuth the Vicks vaporub, he was much much much better. However, I felt like I was having a heart attack myself. my chest has been hurting me for weeks and yesterday my right arm was numb. Then while taking care of Nike I was dizzier than anything. Did some quick research & called my insurance's 1800 24/7 nurse hotline. she recommended that I call 911 & go to the ER immediately. But I just took 2 aspirins and laid back down & made DH deal with the cats/dogs. Felt much better after about 20 minutes or so. So now I have another thing to be worrying about. bleh.

Got about 4 inches of snow out there & its still coming down. yay!! free moisture!!
