Let's start a new month with a new thread, how about that?

Bring your blooms, your glooms, your wishes and your woes and any other thing you want to bring with you as we head into August.

We came from here: http://cubits.org/bluegardens/thread/view/79097/

Reckon there's nothing like a little red sprinkled here and there in a blue garden!

Those are so pretty, Sharon! Thanks for the new thread. It is hard to believe that tomorrow is August 1st already. To me it seems like the summer just passed by way too fast. The kids will soon be starting back to school. Back in the OLD days, we never started school until the day after Labor Day. Now some are starting in July.

I got in three roses I had ordered last week...'Big Mama' , 'Love me tender, & 'Summer Sun'. when I got home from one of the worst days at with that I've had in years, I was quite ready to plant them & play in dirt. lo n behold, however.. my neighbor ad rented a U-Haul pickup truck because he got a boat. how he's going to get this boatbt any of the reservoirs in town I don't know as he doesn't have a vehicle. so here he is, trying to back in the boat without hitting his dead truck that hasnt run in over a year and not go into my property as he knows I would have raised all kinds of Caine if he did. took him almost an hour to back it in. by that time I'd already finished planting the roses & was inside cooking dinner. he's left the boat attached to the U-Haul.. I hope he rented it for the day as he should have taken it back by now.

I think I mentioned that I was redecorating my bathroom. picked up the ceiling color: "Purple Surf" http://www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/620C-3. I think it'll look good with the Yellow Wax Pepper. also getting some beautiful stained glass pieces & sheets to decorate with as well.

I always started school early too, before Labor Day; we got out early in the mountains so we could help plant gardens, and went back to school when the corn and beans were all harvested. When I was teaching sometime along the way, our schools started the first week in August and were always out by the second or third week in May, unless there were snow days to make up. Schools have a specific number of days they have to give students now, maybe 188 or something like that, so no matter what happens, that number of days has to be taught in each state.

Cooler tonight, I just took the Sunshine girl for her last little walk and I really needed a jacket. Strange weather for August 1.

Happy August, y'all . . I hope it is good for all of us.

Weird neighbor, Toni.

Larry, looking so beautiful!! In front of the lath house, is something missing from the right side of the picture? Something that grew in such a way that it formed an arch? Or maybe I'm turned around and backwards. So facing your garage is that picture located to the far right? And there was a message stone there, or maybe a book like thing to stop and read. I think I'm lost, but it surely is beautiful, all of it.
What's growing along the fence where your outdoor dining room is?
I like your words . . . river of grass.

Lucy, I think it was the really rural areas that had an opening of school date to fit the farming season. Here they've started early since the dams that formed the lake that borders the east side of the county were built. It's a tourist area and tourist season starts Memorial Day weekend, so school years finish a week or so before Memorial Day weekend because the students have summer jobs at the marinas and resorts and other lake related activities. Any more it doesn't much matter when they open and close as long as they get that specified number of teaching days in . . . I keep thinking it's 188, determined by the state.

Sunshine has an upset tummy and we've been up and down and in and out all night long. Bless her heart she waits till the last minute to wake me then it's a mad dash to get outside. Is it pumpkin that settles their tummies? I can't remember. Gotta look it up.

Sharon - the red daylilies must look stunning in a blue garden! They are beautiful.

Larry - great gardens. I'm looking forward to the magazine write-up.

Toni - your neighbor almost makes me wish your husband had gotten the Texas job.

Sometimes late in the evening, after the explosion of color from a spectacular sunset has nearly gone, there are a few moments where the sky still shows a trace of pink/mango but the sun is gone and the light has dimmed so that all the sharp edges in the landscape begin to soften and blur. Even the wind dies down as though the world is holding it’s breath waiting for something wondrous to happen. In those few moments the wonder of childhood returns to me and I stand speechless, almost holding my breath, too - just. Waiting. My eyes find the light of the crescent moon in the darkening sky, then discover the first star of the evening. Star Light, Star Bright, first star I see tonight. The words come to mind straight out of my childhood in spite of the many years - and the moment passes. Day time vanishes and Night time takes her rightful place and time moves on. It was one of those evenings last night, and I’m really glad I didn’t miss it and I just had to share. Smiling Group hug

Jill - Sometimes I do wish he'd gotten that job, but then I'm trying to figure out why me, as a homeowner, should have to run away from my renter neighbor. One of these days he's gonna tick me off bad enough to call his landlady to complain. That, plus also one of these days I can send an anonymous email to the city complaining of 2 unregistered / uninsured vehicles, 1 unregistered / uninsured trailer, and now a boat (no registration on the trailer). But I also believe in Karma and it's actually biting him. Yesterday, when I got home, he was trying to back into his side of the property (which, btw, the landlady is not happy about because there's absolutely ZERO landscaping.. no grass, no xeric, just plain dirt), he had blocked my driveway. So I waited a few minutes, and one of my other neighbors pulled in behind me. They couldn't get into their driveway because I was blocking the road, because he was blocking my driveway. Finally, he moved enough so I could zip around him, which allowed them to get into their driveway. I felt bad, but I couldn't go anywhere. Anyways, he kept getting out of the pickup, going to the back of the boat trailer, looking at it & his dead truck to determine how close he was, then getting back in. He kept going back & forth & back & forth & back & forth.. he jack-knifed once but was able to pull himself out of that. After he kinda got it into his side of the driveway, he jumped out. The neighbors were unloading some big stuff out of their truck and he ran over to say hi. They look at him, said, hi, and then just went back to what they were doing, pretty much ignoring him. He had a major hang-dog look on his face when he went back to trying to move that boat.

These are the roses I got:
Love Me Tender: http://allthingsplants.com/plants/view/4074/Rose-Rosa-Love-M...
Big Mama: http://allthingsplants.com/plants/view/527193/Rose-Rosa-Big-...
Summer Sun: http://allthingsplants.com/plants/view/537796/Rose-Rosa-Summ...

I already have Summer Sun, but I love it so much I wanted another one. I had lost my two Sunny Delights, so I put the Summer Sun there and the Big Momma next to it. Figure that should be gaudy enough.

I agree, Jill did paint a beautiful picture with her words. I felt like I was standing there right in the middle of it.

Toni, I'm glad your neighbor finally got that trailer parked without getting into your yard with it. Obviously he doesn't want trouble with you. That pink rose is something else!!

Wow, what wonderful pictures we have this morning! Thank you! I would love to wander through Larry's gardens.

Poor Sunshine. Thumbs down I hope her emergency bathroom trips are over. She waits until the last minute because she doesn't want to disturb you.

This morning we have mostly cloudy. The sun was out for a while, now is behind clouds. Will we get rain? I doubt it. Had lightning and thunder late yesterday afternoon, and only a few small raindrops, more like a mist for a few minutes. I should check the weather forecast to choose a coolish day for making another batch of bread. My last batch didn't turn out so good after I somehow turned the oven off while turning the timer on. One of these days I want to make some flatbread on purpose.....
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Oh, I forgot to mention about poor baby Sunshine! Blueberry yogurt (or any kind, but I know my dogs love blueberry) & canned pumpkin works great. Canned pumpkin kinda a cure-all. Both constipation AND diarrhea can be fixed with canned pumpkin. Trust me, I know. Thumbs down Thumbs down Thumbs down Wolfgang ate LOTS of canned pumpkin because he had a VERY tender tummy. Do NOT EVER EVER EVER give a dog people Pepto Bismol. It has aspirin in it & human aspirin is toxic to dogs. You can get doggie aspirin that's not acetylsalicylic acid, if you need to give them some kind of pain relief. But poor puppy! Boiled rice (brown, wild, or white, doesn't matter) & chicken (try not to give them too much skin / fat as they can't digest that well & it'll just go right through them) and canned pumpkin. Just gotta make sure that it's canned pumpkin & NOT pumpkin pie mix. There's something in that that will make the dog explosive. Yuck!

Such a beautiful picture you paint with words, Jill. Thumbs up

Beautiful rose choices, Toni.

Hope Sunshine perks back up quickly. You're fortunate that Sunshine lets you know. Our dogs usually don't, so we have to clean up the messes.

Thanks Toni,

Larry I usually take her out near midnight, and I did that last night, but I was folding laundry afterward and she suddenly jumped, grabbed my arm, knocked the sheet I was folding to the floor then ran to the door. That was at about 1. So I knew then that something might be wrong though it was dark and I really couldn't see very well. We went to bed shortly after and about 4 this morning, she was on the bed and licked my nose and scratched my arm at the same time. So out we went. Just in time, she barely made it off the deck. Same thing at 7, again at 9, and now she's been sleeping since then. I looked all over for signs she'd been sick inside during the night, but nothing.

Vet said to get her some chicken baby food and the liquid from cooked white rice but I have to go to the grocery for that and I don't want to leave her. I do have some yogurt she might eat, he also told me nothing solid for a day or two. So we'll see. She's sleeping so I know she's feeling better.
