Too many cats!!
Every year I get chicks as I like raising them from little bitty nuggets into full size birds.. Then I sell them. I make a decent profit as I buy them for $3-$4 and sell them for $20/each. Even factoring in the food & electricity for their heat lamp, I do pretty good.

I've been dong this now for .. 5? Years and I've figured out what people want. I usually get silkies for fun, but not this year as I'm doing this just for eggers. People don't want pets, they want eggs. And for the price of eggs in the store.. Yes, I understand. So I'm just doing eggers.

Today I picked up the first batch of chicks: Buff Orpingtons. They're a beautiful brownish bird when fully grown with humungous fluffy butts + a very nice disposition. They will lay brown eggs at about 6 months old, so in July they should start laying. But I'll probably sell them way before then.

Here's the first batch.

Chicks are not bright creatures. Guess thats why we eat them. 5 were huddled up in a corner to conserve warmth while only one found the heat lamp 8 inches away. So I moved each one to where it was (its one of those ceramic infared heat coils, not a traditional red lamp), and the next morning they were all sprawled out in the shavings. Made suee they were ok, which they were, fed them, and left them alone. A few hours later I came back and held each one .. doing this so they will be super friendly birds. I think its next weekend I get my Black Jersey Giants.

Chickens are messy critters. Chicks are even more messy. I have a gravity-fed feeder & waterer for them and they managed somehow to get almost all the food out of the feeder & scatter it all over the place. However, over the years, I've learned how not to waste food (chick food is not cheap!), so I got a boot tray and put that under the feeder. Now when they scatter the food everywhere so they can scratch at it, it's on the boot tray & not in the poo pan below! Of course they poo in the tray, so that has to get cleaned as well, but the waste is about 1/100th of what it has been in the past! Live & learn!

Got a call from the local feed store (well, not too terribly local.. 15 miles away 1 way). My next batch of babies are in, so I'll get them tomorrow. Getting in 4 Black Jersey Giants. They're beautiful birds as well.. very large black birds that can take on a gorgeous greenish sheen when adult. When they're in the chick phase they're cute, but when they get into, what I call the "dinosaur phase" (4-6 weeks old and out of the cute foozy & not quite chicken-looking), they're rather scraggly looking. But people love to buy them! They too are a dual-purpose bird.. both for eggs (large brown eggs.. why does everyone want brown eggs?) and for meat (they aren't called "giants" for fun.. hens usually get about 6-7lbs and roos can get up to 10lbs!). I'm getting only pullets, though.

I got the Rhode Island's on a whim. The guy opened the door where the chicks were + these two little boogers ran right up to me.. So they came home too. I've been handling them every day so they're friendly. Amazing how fast they'll grow... They'll actually start laying eggs by August.

Oh forgot to say.. These are light Brahma chicks. They'll become a white bird with black feathers on their wings + tails. Very beautiful birds. They have fuzzy feet + legs too

So if you decide to keep some for layers, what kind would you consider?

Arlene - I'm getting a few more chicks before the end of the season. I'm getting white orpingtons & lavender orpingtons. Lavenders are very rare, a "new" color pattern of the orpington family. I'd probably keep a couple of the whites because I love white birds and Orpingtons are some of the friendliest birds on the planet as far as chickens.

Big ol' fluffybutts... they're awesome birds. Cold hardy, great layers of brown eggs, friendly.

"lavender" and "blue" birds are usually not lavender or blue, but a form of a grey. Lavender orps are kinda pretty.

That is pretty.

When we get together with our friend Shoe, he gives us eggs and some of them are the most beautiful shade of blue and green. The eggs, not the chickens. No clue what color the chickens are Whistling
