From IMDB:

Quoting:During World War II, Lieutenant Kelly learns of a German bank located behind enemy lines containing 16 million dollars in gold bars. His platoon, led by Big Joe, has three days of R&R coming, so, with the aid of hustler Crapgame, anachronistic hippie Oddball, three Sherman tanks and a touch of irreverence, Kelly leads his men deep into French territory to steal the gold for themselves

This movie is chocked full of fun, with a few serious moments thrown in, and a nod to Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns. I think I've seen this movie at least 50 times!

Some of the best movie lines:

"Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?"

"To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three Tigers."

"Always with the negative waves Moriarty, always with the negative waves."

"We got our own ammunition, it's filled with paint. When we fire it, it makes... pretty pictures. Scares the hell outta people!"

"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

You don't know this movie?? What the heck??

It was made in 1970. Stars Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, Carrol O'Connor, Gaven MacLeod, and many others. George Clooney was just a babe when this was made.

Do yourself a favor, and watch this movie!!

I asked DH if he remembered this movie, he didn't. Surprising, because he loves war movies. Gonna put it on the list.

I went back and read your synopsis, Jeannie. It *does* sound like the George Clooney movie, 3 Kings (I think was the title).

I'll read the synopsis to DH, I'm really surprised he didn't remember seeing it.

Well, they both have soldiers stealing gold, but I suspect the movies are quite different from each other.

For one thing, I'd much rather watch Clint Eastwood than George Clooney Drooling

I am old enough to have seen the original but it is always featured on Memorial Days and any holiday that remembers our wars.
I was amused by the quotes and lines as that language wasnt in our lexicon duering the 40's/\.
Donale Sutherland was the tank driver and the guy who starred in Love Boat series was his side kick.
My memory is trash but now and then there are good moments.
