This spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting -- a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert_Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie_Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd_Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (Robert_Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose "jive" has to be subtitled. Leslie_Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor, launching a new phase of the actor's career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles. The trio of directors Jim_Abrahams, Jerry_Zucker, and David_Zucker responsible for the film would eventually go on to solo careers, but not before making Top_Secret! and Ruthless_People. if anyone has weak kidneys stay near the bathroom because it's that funny.

you haveto pay attention the the one liners such as when leslie nelson, (dr rumack) says the passenges are very sick and they have to go into a hospital. one of the passenges says "what is it" and nelson replies "it's a big building with alot of beds"

I'll get it and let you know when I watch it. I kinda think I've seen it but, like I said before, when you have a bad memory, there is no such thing as reruns.

It's one of my favorite comedy movies as well. I probably saw it a dozen times just to be able to hear all the one-liners. It took renting it to get them all.

I'll have to try and watch this movie again to see if my humor meter has changed. For some reason, my funny bone is not tuned to this kind of comedy. So much so that I've never been able to call it comedy. I walked out of this movie and 1942 and just stopped trying to 'get it'. Oh, well... you never know. My mom hated screwball comedy and thought stuff like the Three Stooges was abominable. In her last years, she somehow loved them and laughed through all the old routines. I don't think I'm old enough yet to make that leap. Rolling my eyes.

Jeannie, I love comedy! But comedy comes in many forms and this is one form that just doesn't do it for me. Face it, Red Skelton, Chris Rock, Jonathan Winters and Robin Williams are all (except for Red, who's sadly gone) comedians. They have vastly different styles. As it happens, I like them all, but there are 'comedians' I don't care for at all. So, I don't know that I can describe the "kind" of comedy I like, but if you look at my other postings, you'll get an idea.

LOL, I do remember seeing some horror films in my younger days. They scared the bejesus out of me, but they don't hold a candle to today's horror films. I can't watch this stuff. Do you remember a 50's B/W film about a woman who turned into a panther and killed her boyfriends? Great stuff. I'll have to try and find it.

BTW Alma, Lisa and I are moving back to Arizona. She's already started her job there and I'm looking for one. I'm sure I'll find something soon. I have quite a few friends that live near you (in the Valley anyway), some I met through daves garden. Lisa grew up in Scottsdale and Moon Valley.

That was the remake, Frank, with Natasia Kinsky. (Not sure I spelled her name right.) Here's a discussion about the original and its sequel. http://www.filmsite.org/catp.html
