Caligo brasiliensis brasiliensis (thanks to JRsbugs for the ID!)
I had seen the giant blue Morpho butterflies nearly every day foraging along the river, but never found one sitting for me until on one of the very last days of our stay.
It was getting dark and we were about to leave the riverside heading back home, when all of a sudden one of those giants landed on a stone at the side a few meters from me, I couldn't believe my eyes and took some hasty shots fearing it would take off again any second, but it stayed and slowly I approached getting some closer shots. it didn't open its wings as they normally don't when they sit, the butterfly then flew to a close-by tree.
We really had to leave then, the dark sets in quickly in the tropics. On our way back the butterfly followed us and to my amazement landed on Geraldine's hat. She didn't notice and couldn't see it of course, so I told her, please stand still I need to get a shot. We both had to laugh of course, what a sight!
