Cannas are lush tropical plants with huge leaves and often have vibrant blossoms on tall stalks. They somewhat resemble very small banana trees, and some even look like gingers. Many varieties have multicolored and patterned leaves, making them a season-long focal point. They add a tropical look to garden beds and container plantings. Their large stature relegates them to the back of the border or to a garden of their own, where they won't overwhelm more subtle plantings. Plants reach 2 to 8 feet in height, depending on variety. Foliage may be green, bronze, gold, or mulitcolored, and the tropical look is further enhanced by flowers in apricot, pink, gold, red, orange, and white.

Cannas are sensitive to cold; in zones 6 and colder, dig and store tubers overwinter.
