I have a question and don't know where to ask, so here goes.

Having only two hens, they are together in a 'pen' that's 2x12 feet. Ought to be not-too-small. I noticed one hen's comb is blackish looking a few days ago. Today I noticed the other hen pecking her comb.

Any way to change this pecking?

The blackish edges are bruises or something?

Doubt it's frostbite in your neck of the woods. I'm having troubles with the hens all pecking one RIR hen. I've sprayed her with Wound Kote to no avail. I even sprayed her with Bitter Licks today and it didn't help. Had to take her out of the pen AGAIN. This is gettin' old.

Have you tried AluSpray? It worked for one of mine whose head was pecked skinless. It makes them look like they're wearing a helmet.

Does it form some kind of coating? I have not heard of it. I can't figure out why it's just this one hen.

There's the old term, "Hen Pecked" lol.

And lol, again, I could start a minor war around here by joking. My sense of humor is generally misunderstood, and people don't laugh, they get insulted and angry.

My JOKE,--- I AM KIDDING, when I say, "Maybe you should feed them a little more." Is there an underfed chicken within fifty miles of this discussion? I doubt it. I haven't offered french toast to my two hens, but I do know they like hamburger, and steak cut up in tiny bite size pieces. I think those two little birdies could eat five times the lettuce that I do.

sheesh. hen pecked. 'Bottom of the pecking order', what other phrases do we have that originate with chickens?

Sue, has another hen taken the dubious honor of being at the bottom of the pecking order?

You might want to observe, and if one hen is more aggressive, take her into isolation! "Take that! You old Biddie!"

A good excuse to set a spell with your chickkies.

When I put a strange chicken in the "hood" they all take a few swipes at her but it's the game hens I have to get the point across to. The others are only establishing the "pecking order". The game hens have spurs and they mean business. They won't settle for simply making a point. They want to beat the newcomer into submission. After a few whacks from my walking cane they settle down. The others are not really being aggresive to the little hen, just picking her feathers and then her flesh. One of the WR hens is the worst and the others might forget about it if she wasn't pushing it. My next move will be to take the WR hen out of the pen instead of the little red hen. That may solve my problem. Sue, did you get rid of your offenders?

Here are my game chicks.

yes the offenders are gone. I sure hope you work out your pecking order in your "hood " Smiling
if i had lots of chickens i wouldn't be so cautious but i only have 5 . So if i loose one then well . 5 less eggs a week for us. Soon we will have more
i would like to add about 8 more and a roo. I think they will fit in the coop ? the size is 7' x18 '

Mine is only 13 x 8 but it is a temp pen. It was the best I could do at the time. It's in a bad place too so when I build a new coop I'll build it in a different spot. It will be downhill so I won't have to climb the hill in the snow and ice next winter. Going to bring the goat house down the hill too. I'll still let them run in the lot up the hill but I won't have to go up there to feed and water.

Glad you were able to get rid of your mean fowl. they can really mess up the harmony in a coop.

I sure hope they get some harmony in the flock. I know how distressing it is.

Great day here today. Got lots done. Cut a clothesline pole. Hung 2 loads of laundry out. Got all the regular work done. I also sat on the hill for about 45 minutes and let the goats run in their lot. The fence is not charged so I couldn't just leave them out. They had a great time. I WS a tray of eggplants. I put the trays of tomato and broccoli seedlings out to enjoy the sun. Put them back when the afternoon sun was gone. Threw the chickens a few bucketfuls of leaf litter to scratch around in. Watered my raspberry canes I planted a few days ago. I also planted 2 new raspberry canes a friend sent to me by DH. Somebody gave them to my friend ( they had been dug up from the person's yard ) and my friend gave them to me. DH said they were plain domestic raspberries. LOL I'll have to see if I can get some more info on them tomorrow. I cleaned the brooder box for the five chicks. They are growing like weeds. And my best news, I picked up 12 eggs from my 14 hens!!!! Best egg day yet. I love my girls! Right now I have a chicken baking in my microwave chicken baker my Mom gave me. So, after supper and a shower I'm off to bed. Unless I decide to hang another load of clothes tonight. We'll see. Good night!
