Our grandchildren, ages 2 and 5, were coming to visit and we needed some ideas of what kind of food to have available. Their mother sent a list of foods they liked. After a post at Yum Yum Divas, the Divas dove in offering up suggestions.

We sure did, Annmarie!
They say they're coming back next year so we better keep the house child safe all year long. . . spent the entire week before removing things that could hurt them or fall on them.

After removing all the things from the lower two shelves of the bakers rack, grannyof8 told me to watch that they don't try to climb the rack and pull it over. That thought about gave me a coronary!

They didn't try that one but they both fell on the stairs a couple of times. They didn't try to go out to the garage where all the poisons, paint etc are. We had warned all 4 of them that we have a lot of garter snakes out there and not to be scared if they saw one. That did it . . . the 5 year old had no intention of walking out there. DH found a snake skin where one had molted and they hauled it back to CA for a souvenir.

Artfully arranged kid food. Love the ideas.
One of my favorite dinners as a kid was a cooked hotdog slit down the middle but not severed, mashed potatoes fill the slit, narrow cheddar cheese slice on top and broiled so the cheese melted and the taters browned. Wouldn't eat it now but loved it as a kid. Carrots and celery sticks on the side.

That's a great idea, Susie. When they come back next year, I'll try that. I might even try that for me; I love mashed potatoes.

* * * but it might limit my serving size * * * Hilarious!

Now that I think about it the hot dog dish could be called a REALLY POOR man's Shepherd's Pie. Love Shepherd's Pie!

You got it . . really poor.

I never . . . never use anything pre cooked . . cans . . frozen . . etc.

I'm getting weak. My neighbor brought me something to try . . and it was all . . pre-jarred stuff . . mixed together. I loved it. Usually the things she makes are not too good but she hit the jackpot with her pasta dish.

So my next article will be "Confessions of a Food-a-Holic". I am going to share a recipe that's all out of jars. I am so embarassed that I liked it. 10 minutes to prepare . . my gosh!

But why invent the wheel? It's a little saltier than I would like but it was very good. Oh dear, what is to become of me.

Shame on you! 12 step program!
I had a friend who made lasagna
boiled spaghetti, canned tomato SAUCE (not tomatoes, not doctored) and shredded cheddar cheese. Layer and bake. Just disgusting.

Lipton's California Onion Soup. Dredge chicken part in LCOD.... bake 350 40 min or something like that. Talk about salt. This is X-BF Frat boy cooking.

Another fun for the kiddies is a Texas Egg. Cook a bunch of bacon. Set aside and save a good layer of bacon fat. Hollow out a piece of sturdy bread (not Wonder) Place the bread into the fry pan w/ the bacon fat, gently crack an egg onto the hole, turn over the whole thing in a minute... let cook a minute or less. Plate.

here is a great kid dessert. take a few apples and cut off about a 1/4 inch from top and bottom. usng a melon scoop or spoon carefully remove the inside of the flesh. when done, pour honey inside the applie and then use sliced apples pieces for them to dunk into the honey.

Cute ideas. I won't be having to do this for another year but I'll save the ideas.

Here is another one that I may put into a recipe article: easy single serving pizza. When there is very little fresh food, as in winter, I resort to other quick and easy ideas. For the 'pizza', I take a piece of bread, toast it, put some tomato sauce and cheese on the top, and toast again. That way, everyone can put their own preferred toppings on, make what they want, and even make more if they are still hungry. Plenty of opportunities for fresh veggies on top, if you have some.
For the apple idea, I make it one step simpler. Use an apple corer to remove the core only, than put granola, raisins, honey, maple syrup, or similar in and around the apple in a small bowl. Microwave until the apple is soft in the middle. To really make it fun, then put some ice cream on top.
One of these days, I may get back into more extensive cooking, but for now, I need to work on what my son can help with, and maybe even eat. Although he had fun with homemade noodles from a hand crank pasta machine.
Too much heat coming again, so the oven is certainly not being used for a while again.

Thanks for the gentle correction. My sister and I wonder what part looks feminine for both me and my son, as I can assure you masculinity is not in doubt for either of us. Maybe I need to get a crew cut.

lance - ploease forgive me for my post above. this is the second time i have had to apologize for saying something dumb. in both cases i have to blame my eyeglasses. i wear bi focals all day long but when i am on the computer i have to use another, stronger pair. when i say your above post i was to lazy to get up and get the computer glases from the kitchen where i had just cleaned them. now with the right glasses i can see how dumb my post was.

just yesterday i told adina (from the carp diem) cubit that she looked mad in the picture she posted only to be told that she wasn't even in the picture. Rolling on the floor laughing

thanks for understanding.

My kids call the egg and bread "toad in a hole"! DGS are spoiled by fresh eggs. One only eats his basted and the other scrambled and his toast buttered all the way to the edge. They are much fussier at 7 and 10!.

Family Fun - Wireless & Unplugged

I created this cubit to share ways of motivating families, especially children, to get outside, and activities to do once everyone is outside. Being outdoors is a wonderfully fun and healthy activity. Let's share indoor unplugged activities, as well.
