It happens......... the person who usually does Children's Time is suddenly sick, and you have a wonderful rapport with children, so you're asked to fill in........ Yikes!

IF, you're lucky like I was, you have a drawer in the Sunday School area where you have pictures, and you can weave a story around it. Our pastor is wonderful and gave me a theme that he used for our Sunday Service and I "winged it".
As long as you remember, even if it's at the front of the church, and the whole congregation is listening, it's for the Children. The adults do not need to be included. They just love to hear children being told a story.
Sometimes adults "become like little children" and come up too! (great if you don't have a lot of children, and you want some child-like adults to join in.........)

Lord Jesus, He's all I need.
God is so gooooooooooood.
Lots of ladies at our church to help with Children's Time.
If my help's needed, I'm afraid, I might lead the kids to a "ring around the pews" march!!!

The best comments I hear is when people of the congregation say "you were talking to the children at a level they understand".
When I hear that about whomsoever is doing the Children's Time, I know the congregation doesn't want an adult version of the kiddies story.
The elders especially love to watch the faces of the little ones light up!

Here are some links to free Christian colouring pages, themes, etc:
http://www.ebibleteacher.com
http://www.coloring.ws/christian.htm
http://www.christiananswers.net/kids/clr-indx.html

The reason I list these, is because when we do Children's Time, we give them a colouring page, with a children's hymn printed on the opposite side.

Now where were those when we were searching for them Susan?!?!?!?!?! lol

My favorite children's story has and always will be The Forgiving Father.....most people know it as the Prodigal Son but when our youth director told it, he put a new spin on it and it really had an impact. His version pointed out that no matter how bad the kid got and no matter how far the kid ran and no matter what wrong he had done, the father spotted the boy from afar off (dad was looking for the kid) and ran out to meet him (kid didn't have to wonder if he was going to be accepted back into the family)....and celebrated by killing the fatted calf and giving the kid new clothes....So no matter how far we stray from our heavenly Father, He is always watching and waiting to forgive us and celebrate our return. A parent's love is stronger than any earthy bond.

What a wonderful story, Julie!
We have a fella in our church that gets right down with the kids, and he really makes them think he's a kid, too. What a rapport! Heck - he really is a big kid. Too bad he doesn't have any of his own.

Just stopped by to see how your cubit looked, great job !!!

I have retired from teaching children, but I did for several years, classes and Vacation Bible School too--I never had a child that did not like to color and do crafts !

I think my favorite story from my own childhood would be the ones about Joseph, as an adult, I still find it amazing that Joseph could be so kind and loving to the brothers that treated him so badly--he is a picture of Christ, no matter how bad Christ was treated, even to the cross--He prayed Father forgive them !!

Lord Jesus, He's all I need.
I come to Christ late in life.
Grew up as a Muslim so didn't have the opportunity to sit through children's classes nor experience VBS in my youth.
I am just amaze with materials that the teachers are equipped with to help the young minds 'learn' the Word.

I've been to one church where I sat in one of the classes, and after the class was over, I had to pull the teacher aside and correct her. She was 'straying' from the Word, and didn't the bible says it's perfect for rebuke too?

In another church, back in Louisiana, ALL teachers have to undergo a very rigid discipleship course put out by the Navigators.

I know one church, lacking volunteers, chose one who's a new Christian to lead the children.

So, in your opinion, what qualifies one as a children's bible teacher?

Jaye, there are so many churches that lack leadership, that I am not surprised that a new Christian was being used to teach the children.
You did not say if this person had a background of being in church.

My Mother taught Sunday School Classes for years, before she was convicted of her sin and accepted Jesus as her Savior. When you think about things like this you have to remember that God used a donkey to talk, and if that donkey was of use, then God can use even unbelievers to spread His Word.
The song leader at our church had led singing for years and was convicted of his sins in a revival, I am a Baptist and the leaders of Baptist churches everywhere say the churches are full of unsaved people.

I do think all Childrens' teachers should be monitored from time to time and when my children were in Sunday School with new teachers, I always made them tell me what the lesson was about when we got home. It is ultimately the parent who has the responsibility to be sure that our children are taught the Word of God.

I know I have not answered your question about what qualifies someone to be a child's teacher, but one of the most important things is WILLINGNESS! If God calls someone to teach and they are willing to follow His call, He will provide what is needed.

Children's Time in our church is not Sunday School. Rather, it's a time at the front of the church when a different congregation member each Sunday talks to the children before they go to Sunday School.
It helps them get to know the members of the congregation, and the rest of the congregation hears a bit of what the children learn. After this "Children's Time" portion of the service, the children come to the choir loft and sing a song with the choir, then they go downstairs to Sunday School with their regular teacher. At one point in the service after the adults have given their collection, the children are called to come up the aisle with the adults to bring their collection plate. Then they go back downstairs until the end of the service.
This serves so many purposes, but mainly to join all the congregation together, young and old.

I take it from the previous posts that other churches don't do this?! because it seems you're talking about Sunday School, and I'm not. The Children's Time people are not trained teachers. We've been asked if we'd be willing to tell them a little story, for 5 minutes, complete with colouring pages and children's hymns. For those who are not comfortable talking at the front of the church, this can be intimidating.

I am familiar with your Children Time from my Mamma's church, they have that, but their Pastor does it with them.
Gee it would be hard to get a story and coloring pages done in 5 minutes !

There are also some churches that have "Children's Church" The ones that do this, have them from the time they get there until the time they leave. It is the same basically as the adult service, just at a level for children.
I would really have to know a lot about who was leading this type of service before I would let my children do that--I think they should sit under a pastor and learn how to behave in church. Some churches have a Pastor that does the Childrens Church, some don't.

In the Baptist church I attend, there is a few minutes at 10am for a Sunday School Superintendent to give a devotional and take prayer requests from the congregation, maybe 10 minutes at the most, then classes go to their places and have Sunday School. The Sunday School lets out about 10:45 and there is a break until 11am, when we have the worship service, all are in the sanctuary for that. If churches have a lot of very small children, there is usually a nursery worker to keep the very small so the parents can have the freedom to enjoy the service, instead of taking care of the baby all through the service.

I enjoy hearing about the way others do things !!

Our pastor used to do the Children's Time all the time, but he has more than one Charge to look after. Ours is a senior church, and he has services at some nursing homes, as well as other duties of course.
As ours is a shared ministry, we all (committees and congregation alike) help with each and every service.
People of our church love to help out as much as we can so we've "taken Children's Time away" from our pastor ^_^

Very soon our Pastor will be sharing a charge with another church that will be losing their Pastor. That pastor is, as he puts it, pre-fired lol It's because he was hired as a "temp" to fill in when their full-time pastor left. His tenure is almost over, and our Pastor has agreed to take on both churches at their own buildings. It's because neither church wants to merge, which would mean closing.

Lord Jesus, He's all I need.
Sandra, that new Christian had attended church in her youth.
You know how God engineered things for the good of His children right? A few months later, something happened to her and someone else stepped in who is much more qualified. This new teacher (him and his wife just moved from another Baptist state) happened to be visiting the church when the announcement was made. Plus he's a 'senior' Christian and WILLING and then his wife will be able to help too!

In my search for 'home', I've attended a Bible/Calvinist church, a Faith Assembly, one "Free Will" church all in Louisiana and 3 Baptist churches here.
Those churches in Louisiana don't have Children's Time, only Sunday School.

Whereas at the first two Baptist churches here, the chidren have their own Sunday classes, while the adults have theirs... from 10.00 to 10:45. After classes they all assemble in the sanctuary, and the children, ages 5 to 8 go up to the front for a 5 minutes "show and tell".. sharing what they've learnt in Sunday class. Gifts are then handed out to them.
Then the kids are allowed to return to their respective parents and join the adults for worship, whereas those under 5 are ushered into the nursery with a worker keeping an eye on them.

My 'home' church now is a Baptist church but it doesn't have Children Time.
We have a prayer session beginning at 9.30. At 10, bible classes start. Different rooms are assigned to the different age groups. Teen, Young Adults, Seniors and Children. Classes end at 10.50.
After classes, we all meet in the sanctuary for worship service which could last as long as 1 and a half hour!
:whistling:
No nursery here as there is only one child under the age of 3. That kid is so very well behaved!

Susan, never heard of churches merging here. But splinter groups will start their own church, maybe that's why we have 26 churches in this small town with a population of 1,300!

Wow Jaye! That is a lot of churches for 1,300. Goodness. Rolling my eyes.

My favorite story is Noah. In fact, my Mom has a tape recording of me and my sister playing church and I preached a sermon on Noah. Hilarious! Pretty funny. I told of how the ones who would not listen to Noah, that laughed at him until the flood came, were beating the door of the ark until their hands turned to hamburger. I guess I was a pretty graphic child. Rolling on the floor laughing

Tami, that is funny--you probably heard a preacher say that is why you repeated it-LOL

My Mamma is Methodist now--she moved to the Methodist church from the Baptist because they needed a Ladies teacher. She has enjoyed every minute since she joined that church.
They have to "share" their pastor also, he has 3 churches in his charge. He manages to preach at all 3 churches every Sunday. Mamma's church has preaching at 9 then Sunday School at 10. The churches are not over 15 minutes drive apart

Sandra,

God puts us were he wants us and I don't think he checks the denomination first. I'm glad your Mamma is happy. Three sermons a day? Boy I imagine he is beat after all that. Smiling
