Yes, you have Bible Study, Sunday Service, Choir Practice, and yes, you invite the community to Christmas Eve service or any other additional service that's customary in your church.
BUT - are you supposed to have other occassions that invite the general community in? A resounding YES!
They may not attend all the time, in fact the only time you see them may be at your Spring Ham Supper, or the Fall Fowl Supper.
As stewards of the church, is there an understanding that you want to call others to the church and further understanding of what it stands for?

I'm the Last person to say I know everything about my church however, I want others to know the wonderful feeling my church brings me. Newcomers to the church? BRING 'EM ON!!

Yes. I agree

In the olden days before welfare and other government run subsidies the church took care of their community. The church would feed, cloth and house people down on their luck or poor and homeless. Since government programs most churches do not take care of their own community as much. In fact, some churches have become cliques and shun the less fortunate. They need to get back to what God had intended.

No, you're right - it's the same in all countries (I'm in Canada)
In fact, I came here tonight to put a particular quote from the bible in.... It seems rather fitting after you put your post in....

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews xiii. 2

I'm pleased to know that the church I belong to goes out into the community to help - for 20 years one couple of our church has taken sandwiches and clothing, that the congregation gives them, to a shelter in the downtown core area. I'm pleased to say that my DH and I are some that are "taking up the torch" from this worthy couple, and will be taking them to the Drop In center from now on.

Our church is trying to become a shelter, too. There are a lot of fire regulations, etc, in order to do this, so we're taking on the task of making our building "user-friendly" shelter that meets with the city's regulations.....

Susan, you are so right that the church should be the first to help the community. In our community, the Salvation Army came in about 15 years ago. Before that, the churches in the area would get together to help whoever was in need. Two years ago, the SA told the churches if they continued to help then the SA would pull out. The churches felt as though they were put between a rock and a hard spot. So now the only help they offer is to their own congregation. Any "outsiders" are told they must go to the SA to get help. And the lady that runs the SA acts as though it is her own pocketbook offering the help. She wants everything except your firstborn and I think the only reason she doesn't ask for that is because of the cost! lol

I have always believed that first and foremost, the churches should center their attention on the kids and elderly. Then comes single parents and then families in need. I was always taught the soup could always use a little more broth if there were extra mouths to feed, and fresh biscuits/potatoes and gravy make up for any lack of meat on the table. There is always room for an extra plate someplace at the table.
I commend your church for doing what they are doing. I wish more churches here would take a stand and not be so lukewarm.
God Bless
Julie

SA does that? What a shame - as Jesus said "The poor will always be among you" This is so we learn to give, and love one another. If we aren't given the opportunity, where's the learning?
One of the things I've learned in the church is that no one person or group "owns" the church....... rather, we're ALL stewards. There are some who are "proprietory" and think They're the only ones who are able to do things. If I'm "greedy" and try to be the only one to help, then I'm trying to get the glory. I feel that no one of us is irreplaceable, and we should work together, rather than be elitists. It's rather humbling to see how needy others are, and how well off we are.
There's always something to count our blessings about.....

It is a blessing to hear that you and your DH will be taking over that ministry. That is awesome. It is amazing that they served in that ministry for 20 years. Wow! Now that is somebody who takes their calling seriously. Wonderful.

I'd rather have my glory in heaven than here on earth. Anonymous giving is preferred when possible. That way it is all about Jesus and no one else has the right to steal his glory.

yes, and I think SA is in the wrong. They should be allowing others to help. It's a large world-wide community out there that needs our help, and not enough willing to help. It takes a long-term committment, but if you have a willing group (even if the members change) you've got the church helping SA and other like-minded organizations! Group hug

I agree....isn't that sort of the lesson plan you taught a few weeks ago Susan? About there being many parts to the body of Christ? And we can not all be the head or foot or hand?

YES, and it's thanks to you, Julie, that I had a colouring sheet for the Children's Time. It was almost last minute (I had 24 hours lol) however, I've had shorter notice for a Children's Time than that (try 1/2 hour! Thank goodness for the new Children's Time drawer 2 of us created the week before!)

It's been awhile, but thanks to someone on the ATP site, and my keeping "Christian Church Communities" in my signature line, I've been "called" back to the place I know and love, my Church Community on Cubits!

I am so thankful for coming over to ATP while following my DG buddies. I discovered an even better forum where a different type of seeds are sown for an even greater harvest.

The more we put ourselves "out there", the more we speak up and gain more and more.
I'm so grateful for that, and all the new friends I'm gaining, you being one, of course Thumbs up
Thank you for drawing me out, Betty - I really appreciate you and your upbeat Christianity - it's refreshing. Thumbs up

Attended my church's semi-annual association meeting tonight. Did some great networking and met some inspiring pastors and laymen. We also had a choice of about 8 different home made pies with ice cream. I chose the lemon cream pie and it was delicious. I feel motivated and inspired. I got from this meeting what I had hoped and prayed for and much more. Encouragement for one.

Mingling with other church leaders is always good!
At some of our church events we have other leaders who attend and make themselves known. Speaking to them about how they interact with the community and sometimes about points in the bible is very educational.
Especially about community interaction. We tell them about upcoming events in our church, and they do the same.
Every 2nd Wed there is a Crossroads Community Church that has a free dinner for any and all who want to come, and Bob & I usually attend.
I enjoy speaking with their pastor(s) - such a bubbly personality and very energetic! Just being around them is uplifting. Angel Lovey dubby
