I have used Al's recipe with just a bit more MG added to the mix. I use Turface and not sure how that compares to kitty litter. I also use the chicken grit (Cherry Stone) from out local feed store.
I just this morning un-potted one of my semps grown in Al's Potting Recipe, it had the most awesome, healthy roots. Seems as though the mix not only drains well, but the Turface holds some moisture that slowly releases to the plant roots without suffocating them. I am a firm believer now. I do have to say I was quite skeptical up until last month. So glad I did the experiment Al recommended.

Al's (tapla's) Container Garden

A good place to explore, if you're looking for answers to questions about soils, fertilizers, or container culture that require slightly more technical answers.
