Nyx had a great number of sisters, brothers, & cousins. One of which I also adopted. Not sure if she's a cousin or sister.

Here's Tara. We adopted her 1 week after we adopted Nyx. Well, technically, she adopted my DH. We were at an animal swap and the lady who had the farm was there with some kittens she was gonna sell. DH reached into the box & this little tiny buff-colored poofball crawled up his jacket and up into his neck, burrowing as deep as she could because she was freezing. She was so tiny & cold. It was pretty cold that day, highs only in the low 40s, and she was so skinny...

The day we got her.

She was an inquisitive little girl & loved to explore boxes. And every box turned into a bed.

All kinds of boxes.

And even things that aren't boxes. Kitty Catchatori, anyone?

Disappointment when she found out there was no fishes here..

And then she turned into a big massive fluffball.

Another one of my critters.. Jupiter.

We got Jupiter at a different animal swap back in May 2012. I was there selling some chickens & there was a lady who had some kittens that she just wanted to find homes for. Ranchers/farmers out this way don't want male cats, only females, so it's easy to find male kittens. There was 3 little itty bitties in her dog crate and one was a poofy black male. DH has a weakness for black kitties, so I asked if I may hold the black one. She thought I was weird that I'd pass up "pretty" kitties for a boring black kitten. So she reached in, grabbed the kitten, and handed him to me. "Here. Take him." she said. Called DH over and handed him the kitten. It was love at first snuggle.

On the drive back home, came up with the name Jupiter. He was very very calm in the van.
Thumb of 2013-10-30/Skiekitty/46ca81 Thumb of 2013-10-30/Skiekitty/2a312b

He was the most laid-back kitten I'd ever seen. Nothing ever seemed to rile him up for any reason at all. Here he is with Conan, my most senior kitty.

He slept a lot. Probably because he grew a lot.

This past winter, I was diagnosed with sciatica. I spent a lot of time in a stupor from the pain meds crashed out on the couch. Kitties were more than happy to help me sleep. Here's Morpheus (Siamese), Raiden (white), & Jupiter (giant black poofball).
Thumb of 2013-10-30/Skiekitty/46d8b7 Thumb of 2013-10-30/Skiekitty/11ca1f

He grew up to be a monster kitty. But, also, a very FAT kitty. He's not just floofy, he's also pudgy.
Thumb of 2013-10-30/Skiekitty/922bbe

Bad thing is that he thinks he's still a teeny kitten!

Great pic of the mantis. Huge fellow for sure. They seem to come in stages here. One year there will be a lot of them and than several years nothing and than back they are. With all the wild birds around here, I think they may eat them. mean and defensive little critters, but I do enjoy having them around.

Awwwwwww cute kitties. The crossed eyed one makes you just want to pick her up and cuddle the heck out of her.

Beautiful Shepard. Still miss mine. Pretty butterfly too. I was surprised to see a couple of skippers floating around today. Poor things. There just no food for them since everything got frosted.

The one critter that I was not expecting to see what tons and I mean tons of carpenter bees all over my hummingbird feeders. I was shocked. Had checked on the plants to see what kind of damage the squirrels and my toads had done now to my plants and thought today would be a good day to take down the hummingbird feeders.

NO way!! As I started towards them I wondered what was all over them the dark shadows. I thought are some late hummers coming through from the north and stopping to get a drink. As I got on top of the feeder, I froze and stepped back. The feeder was covered with these bees. They were stacked on top of each other several high. There was so many of them I thought they had built a hive on the feeder.

I turned around and checked all the other feeders and they too , out of the blue were totally covered. I know I have a few around, cuz I see them, but never have I seen so many. Have no idea where they came from either. Hope they go back to where they came from soon so I can take the feeders down.

Starlight - Yikes!! I dunno anything about bees.. but I'd be worried that they'd set up shop someplace close 'cuz of a ready food source.

Toni, I'm starting to see a theme with your kitties, they all have nice round full bellies! Rolling on the floor laughing They are all beautiful. Black kitty is very pretty.

Star, I'm guessing you are talking about those big carpenter bees. They won't hang around, probably just there for the food but they live in wood, as their name implies. How interesting to see so many at a time, they are usually considered solitary bees, unless they have generations of them living in the woods nearby. They can travel up to a mile for nectar, and since you said everything died in a frost, they must have been hungry when they found your feeders. I've only seen a few of them around lately, wish I would see more.

Oh my goodness what great pictures, everybody!!!

Skie - you have a BIG critter contingent inyour family, huh?
Never in my life have I heard of a "pet swap".
What are the "rules"???

Here in the city, I am limited to 5 "animals" per household. SUpposedly that includes if you have a caged bird or hamster or anything. I consider it lucky for the cats because I wouldn't ever be able to resist a one if I could bring home as many as I wanted, the shelters would be empty......
But it got in my way when I wanted to have chickens for eggs. It includes indoor AND outdoor pets. Thumbs down
My current total is 4, and I'll fudge it to 6 if I can find a litter of Norwegian Forest kittens - I'll take 2 so they have each other to play with.
I won't adopt another bunny after mine has lived out her life (medical is too expensive) but I WILL foster. Fosters don't count toward the 5 per household. I hope to keep 2 at any given time. I'm geting yself setup to keep them separately in case I can't find a bonded pair to foster, but bonded would be my preference. Maybe TWO pair!!!!

Thumbs up

Well, time must be close. I've been checking on the hens, waiting for some little chicks to arrive. Yesterday when I went out to check, all of the hens (except Lucy-Bell, who is Crazy, with a capital 'C') are staying in the coop. I think they are like mother hens waiting. At least I hope that's what they're doing. I know there are hen rules and general chicken rules. Obviously broken rule, we have more than one kind of chicken living together.

Yikes, they sure are making a mess in there! Blinking

OMG! We are having issues. I was soooo excited when I heard chirping coming from the coop. I peek in there but I can't see anything, I can only hear there is chirping coming from under the hens. Hurray!

A little while later, I hear noisy commotion out there. I run to see what's the problem. As I approach I see Fancy and Honey, the two brooders are squawking and flapping, freaking out really. As I get closer, I see a cute little orange chick is running towards them, chirping and they are freaking out, flapping and trying to kick the little chick away, as if they are scared to death of this little chick coming towards them! Blinking Blinking What??? So I pick the little chick up because I'm afraid for its life. Then I see another little, black and white chick is upsidedown, at the edge of the coop, kicking its little legs. OMG! It looks injured! So, by now, here comes hubby. He just arrived from out of town! The two hens are still screaming and carrying on, all of the rest of the flock have dissappeared, no where to be seen. I tell him the hens are acting like they are scared of the chicks!! ??

Fast forward, now the little chicks are in a container in the spare bedroom. Look how cute!!! Lovey dubby

The two broody hens are back on the rest of the eggs? Blinking Shrug!

Now, let's see how round two goes! Rolling on the floor laughing

Please tell me it will get better! I've already decided they were unprepared for motherhood. Now the next hatchlings won't be as scary and soon everything will be okay and we can mingle those first two chicks back with the flock.

How odd - I've never heard of them doing that!

But HOORAY on your little house chicklets!
Perhaps you can reintroduce them to their moms after some others hatch.

DO keep us posted!!!

Awwwww! Lovey dubby Is the one that was upside down okay now? Maybe they were afraid of them because they were used to producing eggs for humans to eat, and didn't know that babies were supposed to come out of them? Didn't you explain to them about the 'birds and the bees'? Rolling on the floor laughing

OH, I SO wanted chickens!
When I found out they were legal here in the city I hit the ground running.
Designed and was excited about building a coop.
Researched, researched, researched......
Learned how to order chicks.....
And then I found out that outdoor chickens count among the household limit of 5 animals kept per house.
NO, I won't give up my house rabbit and 3 cats....
ONE chicken would not only not provide enough eggs, but she'd be lonely out there all by herself!
And then she'd stop laying and I could NOT eat her.......

ANXIOUSLY AWAITING an update on your chicklets!!!!!
