Critter, maybe there will be a better time later for chickens. I waited 50 years to get mine. Hilarious!

Well, we now have 4 chicks in the spare bedroom. They are sooo CUTE! I did find some info on the internet about hens rejecting their chicks, especially if you have two brooding at the same time, they get nervous when they hear the other hen's chick chirping... crazy hens!!

Soo, we have decided to just raise the chicks without the help of mamas! Somehow I think it will be easier. When the third chick was born, it was all fine at first and then one of the other non-brooding hens went out of the coop and the third chick followed her out, chirping and running after her. So Lucy Bell (the crazy hen) went to squawking and yelling and carrying on! Here we go again! And it was in the evening so it was getting pretty cold out. I got down to 43F overnight. Got up this morning and grabbed #4 out from under mama, just to avoid any drama!!!

It sure didn't all work out the way I thought it would.

I will let the hens sit on the rest of the eggs for a couple more days and then they are cut off! Yeah, right! I'll probably check the eggs first just to make sure there aren't any more baby chicks about to be born. We have plans of making a bigger coop. But in the meantime, I hope none of the hens decide to go broody again!!

Note: In the first pic you can see they have a new mama bear. Hilarious! Second pic of First born, so cute!

Sweet pics. : ) How big do they have to get before they can go back out with the mamas?

I have a dumb question. I love my eggs and maybe at some point I may decide to get brave raise my own. Now while I like the looks of some chickens with all their pretty feathers, which ones are the ones that lay the like large to extra size large eggs you buy in grocery store. A friend gave me some eggs to eat and I took the carton home, opened it up and the whole thing was filled with eggs that didn't look much bigger than a dime. Had to use them all to make one meal from.

depends on the type of chicken. Orpingtons produce big eggs. You were probably given eggs from "Easter Eggers" or Americana (sp?). Bantam type chickens produce small eggs.. but they're small chickens, too! Big chickens = big eggs. New Hampshires, Orpingtons, White Rocks all produce big eggs.

IMO, orpingtons are the best chickens. They're so funny! They're great chickens.

Love that sweet video, Renee! Lovey dubby My dogs are very curious about the chicks, they like to sit and watch.

I'm not sure,Star, but dh says we can put them back out after about three weeks? I guess we will find out soon enough Rolling on the floor laughing My New Hapshire Red lays the largest eggs, it's light brown and sometimes extra large. The Ameraucanas lay the blue-green eggs, they are probably the size you would get in a large-egg carton. My little Rhode Island Red is a smaller hen, but she lays decent sized eggs, barely smaller that the others.

Oh, Toni, that you for all of your links. I'm going to have to read them all, they might just have answers to all of my questions!! Thumbs up

One more this morning. That makes five.

That intent look is due to the neighborhood feral cat that was crossing my yard going to the house next door. (They leave food for it on the front porch.)

All eyes sure are fixed on that cat. My doggies have their eyes on the squirrels right now, as they are gathering their nuts. I have to warn the squirrels they are coming before I open the door and let the dogs out! Rolling on the floor laughing

Look Toni, I have a Loki too. Lovey dubby he's not as innocent as he looks! Not even close!
Bless his heart, he's on his way to the vet this morning... for a little snip. Poor baby, they don't know how to act away from home, he's probably scared right now.

Christine - awww.. GSD!! Love 'em!! I'm so torn.. I want to get either a golden or a GSD when my two mutts pass on, but at the same time, I don't want any more dogs as I'm tired of being tied down to the house & not able to go on vacation w/o spending a ton of $ on doggy daycare!! When I go for my first vacation (only 3.5 days) in 5 years, I'm going to be spending more on doggy daycare than for my hotel!!

I think he has a sweet face too, Renee... but wasn't sure if I was being partial! Lol! He's the slowest to mature of all my boys, and he's the biggest! Like a giant baby!

Oh boy, Toni, do I understand what you are talking about. Animals really do tie you down. My dh travels with his job quite a bit and sometimes I think I'd sure like to tag along, especially when he's somewhere like Aruba or some other tropical island! Not too long ago, dh was in the Cayman Islands. But, I don't miss what I call the airport-shuffle! Don't like or miss that part of traveling.

I really love all my animals though, and the GSD's are so smart, they are a joy and make me smile every day!

I love dogs SO much! But I chose cats as living companions for just that reason. You can leave cats home alone for a week if you have enough food and water put down for them and clean the litterboxes before you go.... But whenever I meet a sweet doggie, I am all over it with pets and kisses, too.
