I see Mickey is a rascal.

Toby needs to be a little "bad" every few weeks, either to show that "he's the boss" or because he likes being scolded. I think he likes being scolded, because he will escalate until I yell or something. Then he runs away and is content until next time.

Before I realized that it was my JOB to provide some scolding, I wouldn't do a sufficient job of it. But he's not really demanding. If I didn't yell enough for his needs, he would still jump up, spin around, and run away as if pursued by the Furies of Heck.

Then he would tiptoe back, meek and apologetic.

I found some things to "forbid" that don't destroy furniture or rugs, so he can be bad at will without doing damage.

Sometimes he'll sit on a chair while I'm reading and watching TV, reach out one paw slowly while I'm watching and deliberately touch something on the table, while wearing his expression for "I KNOW I'm not supposed to DOOOOO this!"

Since I don't like to YELL at him (but it is my job), I found other "punishments" that would meet his emotional needs without making me feel brutal.

He hates having plastic supermarket bags rattled at him, but it wasn't enough.

I have a loud plastic whistle that he really hates, but then he casts hurt expressions at me like "I wasn't THAT bad!"

Then I found that he hates even a MIST of water being sprayed at him (though he will sometimes stay outside in the rain until he drips).

So I keep a spray bottle handy, dialed down to the point where it mostly throws a fine mist, but has enough range to reach him when he's feeling naughty enough to need a scolding. That makes him run really fast, like it was a flamethrower.

I think me also enjoys "escaping the spray". Like "I was bad, AND I got away with it!!"

But even that became too harsh in my mind, since I usually did get a few droplets on his fur. (I do spoil him greatly!)

So I learned that I could just SHAKE the spray bottle at him while making a hissing noise, and he felt sufficiently scolded and alarmed that he flees for his life, and knows that he was Bad, SO bad, I mean B-B-B-AAAD to the bone!

Becky shakes her head and says we're perfectly suited to each other. I don't understand what she means!

Thumb of 2013-02-10/marti/f001b2 This was my Queensland Heeler. I got her at 12 weeks old and had her til she was 15 yrs old.

Thumb of 2013-02-10/marti/a1134d This is Brody. He belonged to my boss at the oil field where I worked in Bakersfield, Calif for 8 years. After Brody caught Valley Fever, he could no longer go out in the oil fields so he stayed in the offuce with me and I took him home with me til the boss ended home.

Looking forward to seeing the others!

Did you know that only 20% of ginger kitties are female?
Perhaps she knows she's special and that is why she rules!

Yes! H was very lucky that the car that was following got stopped before they ran over him. They were on their way to my place and that's how he came to live with me.

Lucky, lucky guy!
I wish the following car had gotten the license plate and had the driver arrested for animal cruelty!

I have adopted a kitty who was picked up by two ladies who saw him dart across a busy city street at 4 weeks. We don't know how he ended up alone there, though.

No such like. The people who stopped and picked him up were senior citizens. They were more worried about not hitting the kitten, than getting license #. They left him with me because their grandson lived with them and was allergic to cats. Because of his seizures which started within a couple of days, no one wanted him, including the local ASPC and the pound said bring him in and they would euthanize him. So he is still with me!!

Lovely, loving family. Wish I could still have cats. Allergies developed late. Will be having a fourth dog in the house when my sister moves here with her MinPin in a few weeks. Roscoe dislikes other dogs, attaches himself to children, and is extraordinarily protective of them even from other household members. Be interesting to see how this works out. Whistling

Oh, I'm so glad you kept him, Marti! I wish I wasn't allergic to kitties. Mine have to live outside, but they have a heated house all their own out there. I pet them when they come to the enclosed back porch to eat, but then I have to wash my hands right afterwards.

From what I was told, he is the family pet and follows the kids when they come into the pasture. Every day he waits at the gate near were the bus drops off the kids and they run over to pet him. Think-- LARGE DOG!!
