Probably I should have told this story a few years back. In any case, the reason will become apparent later on. Meantime let me introduce you to the Mertens Water Monitor.

It's all about choices.
Someone with a warped sense of humor thought Hawaii needed Cane Toads...and imported them. Puppies are immediately fascinated and then promptly treated as they are so toxic...actually, our dogs became addicted to the 'rush' the toxins gave. Little by little they grew out of it...and we allow the toads because they eat a particularly noisy Coqui Froq. Yes...it is complicated!!!

Love your photos, Zig...goannas are so beautiful!!!!

Carol, our Cane Toads came from Hawaii. They were introduced into Hawaii from South America because someone had the bright idea that they would kill all the sugar cane pests. Some people here liked that idea and so went over to Hawaii to collect a few. The rest is history.

I remember a couple of years back going into Burunga, an Aboriginal community, when the first wave of the toad invasion was coming through. There was a foul stench around the place and when I asked what it was the locals said the dead cats and dogs killed by the toads. You could imagine this was the same thing happening to a lot of the wildlife out bush.

I understand the Coqui Frog was introduced there by accident, in imported goods. Luckily we didn't have that accident.

REALLY? Thanks, Zig...I didn't know that...about the Ozzie CT coming from Hawaii!!!

Hawaiian Ag. is really focused around maintaining the standards of California because all we ship out of here has to go thru California. Ag. IS REALLY quite toothless as they are afraid they might annoy tourism!!! So all kinds of invasive species get brought in...kept quiet and then they are found all over the state and it is too late to do anything!!!! Australia and NZ do such a good job!!!

Unfortunately a few too many things did get through, but the authorities are more strict now. They realise how many millions it could cost them further down the track. NZ let ferrets go wild. They had many flightless birds that got decimated. They brought in possums from Australia and they're killing off some of their trees. And the list goes on.

I think many countries make really stupid decisions!!! Less and less, with better communication, I think we will suffer those kinds of errors.l

Hopefully.... Confused

Reptiles and Frogs of Australia

Whilst first starting as a Crocodile Cubit, questions/comments about other reptiles made me decide to broaden it to other reptiles as well, and frogs. There's very many groups and species but I'll cover what I come in contact with and photograph.
