When DG was growing, many of us lovingly contributed to the community. We spent countless hours uploading our photos to share with fellow gardeners in the Plant Files. Through their recent actions, it is apparent that IB is not much on sharing. Well, when we contributed to the PlantFiles database, we did NOT give our copyright to any other entity. In fact, we still own the copyright for our contributions and we can request that our photos that have been posted to Plant Files be removed. I do plan to retain my membership with DG. In fact, I also paid an advertising fee for my business there that runs for almost another year. I will continue to frequent the forums there and maintain my personal gardening journal. These are things that I still enjoy, even if I'm not a fan of IB. HOWEVER, I'm no longer willing to let my hard work (in the form of my personal plant photos) contribute to IB's public internet presence and profits. I have written to request that my contributions to PlantFiles be deleted immediately.
If you feel that you have personally been damaged by IB through their recent actions (as I have), you might consider doing the same.
We can revisit this topic over in the Yahoo group if/when Cubits shuts down.
Evey.... Wat is to stop them from taking photos posted in the forum, do those belong to them to us e too?
I know if ya goofed they would take down a photo but not sure they would go back through every file in the database and delete out one by one for a member. For your sake and your request I hope they follow up on your request.
Ella, I don't know about ones posted in the forums. But, I can't imagine they would troll through all of the individual posts looking for photos. Zuzu had the right idea when she just posted rose parades and not too much in the plant files. All of us got to enjoy her photos, but they weren't there for easy access for vendors to steal at will. I've seen quite a few of my rose photos end up on vendor sites and on eBay and it's pretty irritating.
Okay, Terry just wrote back... she says it is a time issue that prevents them from deleting the entries at member request. With only two administrators working on those files, it would be time-prohibitive to delete them all for members who now make the request. I think perhaps this needs to be referred to an attorney, since we were ASSURED that we could simply ask an administrator to delete our own images if we so chose in the future. Many people made their contributions based on those assurances, so it's reasonable to expect the administration to live up to those promises.
If anybody who has posted a large number of contributions to PlantFiles is like-minded, we should start a discussion about this over at Yahoo. We would need to coordinate our efforts to make a difference.
My few pictures were added very early in the start up of the database and were of very poor quality for the most part...if they haven't already deleted them they should have! It would be funny if those poor examples were all they were left with
I actually have to say that I contributed to Plant-files to be able to share beautiful photo's with gardeners like myself who wanted to be educated and had no idea what some plant's may look like at different stages of maturity, etc..
I will not request that my photo's would be pulled as I would just be hurting somebody like myself who was seeking out a little information and having her anticipation grow in leaps and bounds when looking at some of those beautiful photo's!
