We used to have the emoticons on the right of the box, but they were moved. I liked them better before, but no one else has said anything, so I kept my opinion to myself ;) They were moved there to keep from annoying those who don't wish to see them at all.
Even with my small CRT screen (not flat screen) I can have both the reply box and smilies visible at the same time (as Trish notes). I do use emoticons at times, but I also find them distracting if the whole line up is in front of my face. Now if you can honestly say that you weren't distracted by the emoticons below in this post below, then you are a far more focused man/woman than I.
On serious discussion pages having smiles on the side looks to be in poor taste. I like smilies, I us e them, so I don't want them turned off, but just prefer not to see them on the side of a page when the threa dis suppose d ot be of a serious and professional nature.

Can an adjustment be made to have the smiley inserted whereever your curser is placed? I type first, edit, then go back to insert my smilies. No matter where I place my curser, though, they all come in on the very bottom line and I have to cut and paste them in place.
Same happens to me, and another member I know of. At times it will go to the line or two lines below even if I try to put it in a sentence as I type, I just use the back arrow to bring it back into place.
I can't put one in where I want to afterwards further up from where I have finished typing, often we want to do it after we have typed other words, then the smilie is an after thought. It always goes to the bottom.
