What a gorgeous color Ted! I took lots of photos last night, (not the best lighting in my house)and I discovered that the purples definitely show up best under flourescent lighting. That makes sense since it's the cool end of the spectrum. I will try again at some point with stronger florescent lights, and outside when it dries up. Typical incandescent indoor lighting doesn't do anything for my purple dahlias.
I forgot to tell you all the name of this 4 inch in diameter, somewhat stellar shaped flower that is such nice deep blue purple. Seabeck's Hilda. I wish they had used a name that reflects the purple color. Does the name Hilda give you purple images?
We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden.
I'm pretty sure its the heat. This has been the hottest summer I have seen here. And it has been after the hottest day that I see the browning at the tips.
I think Camano Concord is another of those "Can't do without" dahlias. Its an incurved purple cactus that never fades in the sun, holds up well in cuts and is pretty in the garden. I actually like Hollyhill Renoir a bit more because I love that green glitter between the petals but Concord did way better in my garden this year and produced lots of flowers. I think Renoir got a bit crowded out but I have ordered new tubers from Lobaughs and will make sure they get a prime location. Renoir is about a foot shorter then Concord and I think that is why it suffered this year. I hope to always be able to grow both of these!
Oooo Ooooo! Saw it many times over the last couple of seasons, mostly at shows but also in a couple of gardens. My newest must-get purple. Very eye-catching, dark, rich, glowing color. It's another of those purples that I have never been able to come close to capturing with the camera. Always comes out looking too red. Still not quite as blue a purple as Thomas Edison, but nothing I have seen is, except maybe Seabeck's Hilda. It is an incurved cactus, but never gets as wildly incurved as say Snoho Storm or Hollyhill Cotton Candy. It has been winning a lot in the shows. I have it on order, but have not grown it, so I can't say anything about how it grows.
Here is a picture I took at Clearview Dahlias this summer on the tour:
and on the Clearview website, the closest I have found to the actual color:
River's has been taking orders for some time; but they just added their new intros. I've been excited about Purple Pinwheel since I started seeing photos of it.
The ADS seedling results said it compared to PR 34. I've copied that chip color (to the best of my ability) below. That's a very purple dahlia if that is accurate.
