The first bouquet with a dahlia quickly assembled for Mother's Day

An almost ripe Lakeview Lucky with mint, lavender and the season's first sunflower. The rudbeckia re-seeded from last year!

Update on the bouquet...since my first blooms get celebrated the most!

I've decided that green centers are acceptable for Florida bouquets....better than NO dahlia bouquets!!

Absolutely Jon! Green centers are acceptable here too, since most people don't even seem to recognize a dahlia. Did you grow the celosia from seed? Was the white Dame's Rocket? I quit growing that years ago since it kept wilting so badly in our heat.
Yes, Happy Mother's Day to all you Moms on here!!!
I spent today watching over 1000 graduates from the nosebleed section of the UNC stadium. I couldn't help but think of how much money was being made from all the people buying flowers on site for their graduates. I never bothered to find out how much they were selling for, because I know my daughter likes MY flowers Big Grin

Yes, Annie....isn't it nice to grow our own flowers? I thought that today when I was in the supermarket watching everyone with their plastic looking pink roses wrapped in pink tulle for Mothers Day.
The celosia was started from a 4 inch plant and had no variety name, but I have more crested types coming on from seed.
The white flowers are daikon radish blooms! They perked up nicely today but started shedding a bit. Big Grin

I'm looking forward to seeing all the different celosias I have grown from seed this season. I will have to give up(for now) on one part of my dahlia beds and turn it over to celosia since water stays there after flooding.
I've never grown daikon radishes, or knew they had pretty blooms.
The guy at Whole Foods told me that they were good for removing heavy metals from your body, so I have been using them in salads.

I love the bouquet, Jon! It is so filled with color and love and joy! My kids never bring me bouquets but I know if my Maine Gardener were close enough she would. The others are all too urban...Thank goodness I have one who inherited the love of the land from me :-)

That makes me happy just looking at it! Thumbs up
I like the way the red in the coreopsis picks up the blush on the dahlia.

That totally says, "Sunshine"! I love the sweep of coreopsis over the big heavy sunflowers.

Thanks for thee lovely bouquet Jon! It gives me a preview of what's to come in my own garden. I am growing Indian Summer and Irish Eyes Rudbeckia, and several sunflower varieties...but I still haven't even planted the sunflowers yet. Sad

Annie, an idea for a quick sunflower crop... I grew mine in open bags of potting soil.
Thumb of 2016-05-14/FLflowerboy/9e865c
No tilling, weeding...and I can throw the soil in the garden when they are done.

Do they root down through the plastic? - otherwise they seem to be growing in 3" deep soil

The plastic bottom has some puncture holes for drainage, but yes, they are only growing in a few inches of soil and don't seem to mind!

That's a neat idea Jon, since I can't plant in front of my defective fence yet. I'm still praying that the fence company will decide to do the right thing and change out all the bad wood for me. It's been a drag though, not being able to use that huge bed!

Roses and Honeysuckle....such torture! Big Grin
