And it begins! Swan Island opened yesterday. Their new intros won't appear until later.

Swan Island said once that they sold 15% of their tubers during their festival. It is the 23rd and 24th of August and the next weekend this year. I have found it strange that they generally do not put their new introductions on display for the festival. They grow them in fields inaccessible to the public. I suppose if no one sees them, that one has to rely on their pictures and descriptions in the catalog.

I could have sworn that some of the displays I saw in their basement rooms were new releases, but you would know much better than I.

Yes, the displays in the basement storage area do have them but I always want to see flowers growing on the plants in the garden.

In the old days "going to the site " meant visiting their gardens. I have to think twice when someone writes that phrase.

They seem to have added two new ones without pictures. And I see My Hero went down $10 in its 2nd year.

This is the first year that is has been possible to go to the festival. Any thoughts on the best day or time to attend? What to see and what to skip? Is the tuber dividing worthwhile?

I would suggest going as early as it opens. Crowds get really thick in the display room and to me that is the piece de resistance! It showcases all the dahlias they are selling and they do it with beautiful displays! Be sure you have a way to take notes! After that you can wander the fields and see how they varieties look out in the sun...good way to pick up on the colors that fade in bright sun.
I assure you you will never be the same after participating in this! I can only liken it to a religious experience, LOL They sell bunches of dahlias so you can buy the ones you liked best and take them home with you to enjoy in a vase.

Swan Island Festival: "I would suggest going as early as it opens" The festival is a full two weeks and of course the week ends are the busy days. Get there early on any day for good parking. The advantage of the festival is that there are some presentations(I have never attended one) and some vendors that sell food and other things. And of course the tuber storage underground room is full of hundreds of florist prepared displays. After the festival dates, the gardens are open to the public all day long with easy free parking. No huge hoards of people and you can cruise through the display garden and the trial garden at a leisurely pace.

Our show is on the first week end of the festival and we have access to a 12 passenger van that we drive from our show site to Swan Island on Sunday morning. So you have 12 dahlia addicts in a van and only one has to drive. You do not have to worry about getting there or parking there or driving back. I believe there are some lunch plans included. Many other club members drive themselves to the festival that morning as that is where our trial garden is located and we have a judging "class" there. I drive there and since I get there early, parking is no problem.

Ah Ted, that reminds me of the first National Dahlia Show I attended when it was in Portland and I took the bus tour to Swan Island,,,now that is the way to go! No worries about parking or finding the right roads, and lots of dahlia fanatics to share it with!

Where will your show be held? (Just in case I end up in Portland that weekend to meet our little grandson. There will be "limited access" at first while his parents get used to being a 3-some, so I might just need something else fun to do :-)

View of the trial garden at Swan Island looking over the fence to their re-modeled show gardens. Their festival was going on and as I walked to the trial garden through the hundreds of visitors milling around the food vendors and such, I heard "Hello, Ted" and it was Nick Gitts, the major owner of Swan Island Dahlias. I asked how it was going and he said he leased 2 more acres for parking this year and yesterday they still ran out of parking. And like the character in Alice in Wonderland, Nick disappeared into one of the buildings. I know he has a short attention span but 15 seconds must have set a record. Perhaps the reason for the crowds is all those ads they put on our local TV stations.

I must say that this is the best festival I have seen and I have been to many. The trial garden is in spectacular shape. The newly re-modeled show gardens next door are looking very much better than ever. And to think they finally learned the alphabet at Swan Island and all the 370 varieties are now in alphabetical order. I bet that saved them from 100,000 questions that they got each year about where is XXX variety.

This lady kindly kept pointing at the flamingo for the picture. It turns out she is growing Cafe' au Lait for a big wedding. I did not share my personal dislike for that flower and I shared some facts about it that were interesting to her.
