These are along what is called the Fossil Ridge Trail. We had not gone on that trail before but the geologic map showed that the fossils were located not all that far from the trailhead. Otherwise, it looks like most of the trail is very steep. California buckwheat is finishing up its blooming. ![]() The fossils looked better in real life than they turned out in the photos, but here goes. scallops ![]() oyster ![]() clam ![]() The hill with the antennas is Saddle Peak. The haze on the far right is from the fire that was burning up at Palmdale, about 50 miles away. ![]() the Cold Creek valley ![]() |

You're welcome. It's a great state, but they all are! |

Kelli, great photos! So, this area was a sea once? |
|

Yes, everything around here was once under water, though these fossils are now at 2300 ft elevations. All of the fossils around here are marine. The fossils in this thread are from the Miocene age, which was before the Ice Age but after the dinosaurs. |

So cool! Catching up.... Are you going there again? |

I don't know. We usually don't decide where we are going until the day before. |
