Well you could have last year's seed now which are still good. You will at least be able to see if the leaves will be dark unless you don't care about that. I'm not sure how much the tuber will develop before frost. I do throw out most of them. Here is an example of one I didn't keep. Poor center, poor petal form, washed out color and green leaves. Most will be like this.
