Species: mays

Cultivar or Variety: Astronomy Domine Sweet Corn Landrace

Characteristics of Plant
Grass growing 4 to 8 feet tall. Male flowers are located on the top of the plant. Female flowers are at mid-height.

Astronomy Domine sweet corn may be the most important corn breeding project of this century due to the intent of it's breeders to develop the most nutritious and diverse open pollinated sweet corn ever. Approximately 200 named cultivars contributed genetic diversity to Astronomy Domine. It is an old fashioned chewy sweet corn with lots of kernel colors and not an overabundance of sugar. This corn germinates well in cool soil.

Astronomy Domine is an open pollinated and public domain landrace variety. It is very suitable for seed saving, and for use in developing one's own variety of sweet corn.

A landrace is a foodcrop with lots of genetic diversity which tends to produce stable yields under marginal growing conditions. Landrace crops are adaptively selected for reliability in tough conditions. The arrival of new pests, new diseases, or changes in cultural practices or in the environment may harm some individuals in a landrace population, but with so much diversity many plants are likely to do well under the changing conditions.
