Ella's Garden Plants from A to Z: Kerria japonica, 'Pleniflora', Japanese Rose, Easter Rose

Common Name: Japanese Rose, Easter Rose

Family: Rosaceae

Genus: Kerria

Species: japonica

Cultivar or Variety: 'Pleniflora'

Characteristics of Plant
If you like the look of miniature double roses, you'll love the look of this particular Kerria. In the spring it is covered with bright 1" to 2" pom-pom deep yellow double blooms.

What is nice about this shrub is that it can take full sun to totally shade and still grow. The only problem with it being in total shade is that the flowers have a tendency to not be as bright of a color.

'Pleniflora' is what is known as a cane type plant. It send up canes which makes it nice if you want to make a hedge or a tall border.

Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' can get as tall as 8' and as wide if not kept pruned back. Let it grow to the height you want, let it bloom, and than do your pruning. Always wait til after bloom season before pruning because blooms are produced on the old wood.

Generally, if not grown in total shade it will bloom the first time around Easter, which is where it gets one of its common names from, and a second blooming near the end of summer.

It is a good spreader, so if you only want it to spread so far, just cut out any new canes that develop.

A pretty carefree shrub that is deer tolerant too.
