Ella's Garden Plants from A to Z: Cajanus cajan, Pigeonpea

Common Name: Pigeonpea

Family: Fabaceae

Genus: Cajanus

Species: cajan

Characteristics of Plant
Shrub or small tree 3 to 7 feet in height; grown as a short-lived perennial in warmer climates, as an annual in cooler climates. Start seeds early indoors as you would for tomatoes to extend growing season; if planted in a large pot can be over-wintered indoors. Pruning the top of plant makes it more bushy and the crop is easier to harvest.

Germination Tips: In cooler climates start seeds indoors to extend season.
