Ella's Garden Plants from A to Z: Aquilegia caerulea, 'Colorado', Colorado Blue Columbine, Rocky Mountain Columbine

Common Name: Colorado Blue Columbine, Rocky Mountain Columbine

Genus: Aquilegia

Species: caerulea

Cultivar or Variety: 'Colorado'

Characteristics of Plant
A perennial plant that is sure to attract the hummingbirds. Aquilegia is a farily tough plant. It will survive in Zones 2-10.

Aquilegia caerulea can get as tall as 2' and in early spring will send up sturdy stems with white on blue flowers, or just solid blue. To keep this plant flowering, keep it deadheaded regularly.

Seed benefits from a cold chill to germinate. The best is 3-4 weeks at 40F and than move to 70-80F. Seed germination can be erratic so have patience.

In warmer climates this plant benefits from some shade. Also, do not over water. Wet feet are not appreciated, nor is burying the crowns to deep.
