Still plenty of room for anybody who would like join. Just jump in and say you would like to join.

Notice of updates added to bottom of first post of the current thread

We came from here: http://cubits.org/ellasgarden/thread/view/38605/

Rules and official swapping start thread on Nov. 3rd: http://cubits.org/ellasgarden/thread/view/37488/

Swap Trade Lists are here: http://cubits.org/ellasgarden/db/hogwildseedswap/

If you have been the past year a Survivor who has lost their gardens due to natural disasters, you don't need any seeds to join. Instead, let the seed fairies here, reach out and share their love of gardening and flowers with you to help you rebuild.

Make sure you don't forget to mark the Watch button. Any questions feel free to ask.

IMPORTANT INFO! Everybody might just want to make sure they have a back up copy of their trade list in word or whatever it is you use to save info, just in case. we have had a few occasions, myself included when I first joined, where i wasn't keeping a backup copy and was editing and hit a wrong button and lost my list and had to start over.

If you don't know how to save in word, and somebody had to show me, as I pretty bad on puters other than basic stuff, just ask, someone, will tell ya how or show you.

That is why we have have everybody post requests and confirmations on threads first. That way myself or somebody else, can go back through threads and help ya find your swaps again and get ya going again.

Now at some point Dave will be opening the commerce stores up. While he does that. You may find the whole site is down for a little bit while he uploads stuff. I'm going to ask him to try and let me know so I can let ya all know ahead of time it coming, so ya don't panic, if for some reason you can't log into cubits. Sometimes he can give warnings well in advance and sometimes it may just be an hour or two before he does it and site not down long when he does it.

You can always cmail me for my emailaddy for a back up, if ya think ya might have problems on puter and need help or not sure if site is down or if it your computer. I have dial up and it takes me awhile to get email to load, so have patience.[/b]

Hope everybody made the jump safely. Now if your like me you probably haven't read the first post again. Just so ya know any new updates will be listed at bottom of it, besides somewhere in the thread.

Click the watch thread Hurray!

MJ.... yep be best to put the whole head in there. Went looking to see what I could find out about your Aster. Looks like it is fertile. Found a site that said to sow seeds on surface at 70 F. Not sure how correct that is off hand, but it a start. I stumbled on this site which I thought was neat and could be a help to others too out collecting seed from wildflowers or cottage flowers as some folks call them.

Stephanie.... Great I know ya can do and be fine, we here to help ya at anytime. Smiling

Ella, great site for wildflowers! I already found something I have... this grass: Little Blue Stem Grass. They make for interesting fall and winter display, I think...not sure if anyone likes this sort of thing?

Kelly, I'll list the clematis a little later today here that I'm gathering. Still need to collect a few more and I'm dying my hair right now and it's too cold to go outside with wet hair. lol
Only once have I tried to start clematis seed from the larger clematis. I wintersowed them and nothing happened. I have read somewhere that the larger clematis may take several years to germinate and so to keep the WS pot for at least 2 years ... I'm afraid I don't have patience for that. Glare

I do believe that my Polish Spirit starts from seed since it seems like I have a couple new plants over the years, but I'm never able to find very many seeds on that one ... I think I wait too long. Picture of my polish spirit at bottom.

Also Kelly, didn't we split a pack of Ideal violet dianthus from that summer hill coop last year. I'm trying to save seeds from them, but only have a couple so far ... how about you ... and didn't the flowers seem more red than violet to you? they sure did to me. I loved them anyway, nice big dianthus flowers, too bad they are annual, but I'll be starting some from seed again this year and offering some if I can just get more than a couple.

Kelly, you asked which clematis I'm saving seeds from, well, here is the list:
Nellie Moser, Haku OOkan, Pink Fantasy, Polish Spirit, Venosa Violacea, Jackmanii and Silver Moon. I can't find any seeds on my Multi blue, which I just love, such a strange looking flower.

Hey Sharon, yes, the Ideal Violet was definitely more red than pictured! I'm afraid mine didn't do too well (gardener error... planted in neglect-prone areas).. don't think I have any plants left to collect seed from :-( Maybe one... will have to go check! They were pretty, but seriously clashed with what they should have gone well with if they had been the color shown on the websites!

Ella -- do you have a limit on posts before you change threads?? I know on DG it is always around 200 .... i think here [for some reason] it needs to be a lot less.

I noticed yesterday you gave the gentile nudge to start one [to me and lea] and i check the posts and it was just over 100.

Brrrrrr, ** shiver** i'm sitting out side because i get a better connection [2 bars] but it's chilly today... probably just over 50 but thankfully no wind.

Hi All - I read through the rules, but am still a little confused. I have started the list of seeds that I have (and will be adding more later), and listed some seeds that I want. I see that people are asking other people for seeds already, and keeping track of that. It is the November 3rd official start that I am confused on. On Nov. 3rd, do we ask again for those same seeds from the same people, but at that time, it is official? Confused

I am going to be out of town on a business trip then, and won't be back until possibly Friday, Nov 5th or the 6th. Will I miss out on most everything except possibly the ones on my top ten wish list? Not that it would be a big problem - I would be thrilled with 20 packets of seeds. How in the world do you all keep track, sow (either wintersowing or direct sowing), and take care of over 100 packets worth of plants? I am tired just thinking about that. Hilarious!

Ella, can you create a place at the top of our database seed list where we can put a link that directs people to the page that says "Sending Personal C-Mail to *****" so they can easily c-mail their requests. I know we can put it at the top of the "have" list but it might help everyone to remember to include it if it has it's own box. I like to send/receive my requests via c-mail so I can keep track of them and I know others have said they did as well in previous years. I get lost trying to keep up with the threads once "oinking" season starts! Thank You! Smiling

Tip for germinating clematis: the seeds must be not only be wintersown, you must disturb them a little every now and then. That is, stir the soil every couple of weeks.

Found that out when I dropped the pot in which I sowed clematis. Wouldn't germinate before but did after I dropped it.....

Anyone else feeling cross-eyed yet? Blinking I think I'm about halfway done packets... with labels still to go! Good thing DH is busy this weekend... more time for seeds!

Dianne..... Ignore those couple folks, that have stuff in the going in and out section, just do like your doing and as everybody else is. Those folks really shouldn't have stuff in there. What they doing now is what I call putting out feelers, I guess is the best word I can think of right now.

When I created the database I tied to create everything at once, so I wouldn't have problems maybe trying to create/add later, you can't edit/change major sections when changing a database format, you have to delete it and anything in it.

I'm not the most computer smart person, and I had nightmares of changing things later and folks all have lists up or something and me accidentally deleting everything. Then their wouldn't be a piggy was cuz ya all would, have stamped me and had pork chops for dinner. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

If your have special things, you maybe want to oink for, you can do like Mekos has and put it in your wish list to remember. Just put it under the wish list you make for me. I'll be reading the tops not the bottom.

Yep the Swap does not start officially til Nov 3, on Nov 3 folks have to come post on the official thread asking first, then send that personal cmail, asking again as a back up . The person they ask may send a confirmation cmail back or just post on the thread they acknowledging your request.

For example

You may say Star I oinking for on the thread, before you send a cmail.

marigolds
petunia
sneezeweed

then on the thread I may say on thread:

Soils got ya, or Soils it yours, Soils tossing into your trough, It's hitting your feedbucket. Rolling on the floor laughing

About the only person, anybody may get a cmail from and not see it posted on the official thread is from me. If it something I really want for me, I will oink like everybody else on threads. I go through lists over and over and wishlists and if I see something on somebody wishlist, cuz a wish list is what ya would really like if available, then I will dash off a cmail quick and oink it for it, if I see that person who wanted it hasn't seen it offered to oink for as the lists sometimes get huge, and then when it comes I add it to their bucket.

Nope don't worry, you won't miss out. Oink before you leave, if you have access to computer while ya gone, ya can still oink. If not, when ya get back, just start oinking again. By then folks will added more stuff. The available lists change constantly. Folks will be adding and oinking all the way to dec as they taking their seeds to post office and sometimes even afterwards. Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious!

If while your gone, you happen to see where somebody had something ya really wanted and it marked a s gone, you can always send them a cmail asking if they happen to have anymore left. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

If anybody has to like you leave for a couple of days, that fine, ya just have to post it on the official thread that you be gone. While your gone folks will still be oinking on threads and sending ya cmails to answer when ya get back. That lets everybody not worry.

There will be folks who will come oink, answer and send cmails and then not show up again for awhile to do the same thing all over, because of work or families or schedules or as like in Tuinks case who from the Netherlands, where there like an 8 to 9 hour time difference and where internet can be iffy to non-existent at times.

Over the years we have had folks that have had emergencies before. In those cases folks just toss their seed any ole which way and send it to me, and I go through and package it out and list it up for them and fill a box for them if they can't oink, so they don't miss out and only have to worry about getting well. Thumbs up

There gonna be, and hoping with all my heart, where my son who overseas, may get in from duty overseas before he ships out again to new duty base, and I won't be around myself much. Never knowing how much time I will have with him if any ever again, I grab every moment I can. Everybody will know then Hurray! At that time Tcs will take over as first in command and then Lebug and if they not around too, then they will pick regular pro piggies know what to do and will help and handle any major decisions, if some need made, like adding new folks and making sure they get set up.

It may sound confusing right now, but it not. it really easy peasy, much harder to explain it all out. Just think of how you do regular trades, it about like that just on a larger scale. Just go at your own pace. Don't feel overwhelmed or rushed by requests. First few hours everybody excited, anxious and nervous, just take your time.

Even at the beginning I have gotten twisted around and the pro piggies have come through and helped and within a few hours everybody on the same page and oinking smoothly along. Thumbs up

If anybody is a subscriber over at Dg, maybe they can grab a link to one of the first posts that shows one of the official oinking threads and also has the links on the top to seed swapping lists. Maybe that would help some of the new piggies, see how things work, if they a subscriber over there.

Tcs..... Between 100 and about 125 posts to change. We have a lot more mechanics on Cubits and so sometime s thing take a bit longer to load. Especially if ya have dial up when a lot of pics being shown.

Danita.... Like I said above, I afraid to mess with it. Wish I would; thought of that before hand. Folks welcome to put link to cmail addy if they want.

Now this part ya may not like. Whistling

In the past we have aloud just cmails only. Unfortunately, doing that created problems for me keeping track of everybody and also for those who helping to keep track of everybody and whether seed still available and who had what on their list. It makes our job harder, especially mine.

also, we had a few last year, not playing on the swap this year, that went through and copied long lists from folks , and requested them behind the scenes. I got mail all over the place from folks saying that so and so had sent them a request behind the scenes for like 30and 40 things at once that would wipe out their lists, asking what to do. By the time I was counting their feed buckets they would have really have gone hog wild asking for 300 to 500 seed packets before we even got to Part 2. That just not fair to the other piggies.

Then I have to go back and get them back into same amount as everybody else and it causes chance of a loss of getting that seed from somebody who really wanted it. I'm not talking about Survivors either oinking for that many seeds either, or those oinking for a few packets over the 100.

So, this year, sorry, but to make it fair, easy on me, and so folks don't place a burden on the generous other players, we going back to all oinks have to go on threads along with cmails, not just cmails. With a swap as big as we get, it also a safety net. Say, I ha d an emergency, somebody hit me and I in a car accident. I than can send document of everything going on to somebody else to keep track of til I get back and them know just where things are with everybody and make for a smooth transition, so no oinks are lost or piggies stuck under a fence rail. Thumbs up We try to cover all bases and that not possible with cmails only.

We have other folks playing that don't watch the threads. They oink for what they want on threads, and maybe just confirm oinks to them by cmail alone and not on threads. That's fine. That part I have no problem with , but all requests going on official thread first.

Some folks have to work and oink during lunch breaks and 15 minute breaks and they oink on threads and than later go back when they have time and do cmails and updates.

There something I do, that may help others out too keep track too. I take my seed list, have it in word, print it out, it looks something like this at the beginning. I picked this up from one of the pro piggies and thought cool, great way to keep track and from getting lost.

5 Thyme Thymus vulgaris 30 seeds
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

3 Rosemary officinalis Rosemary 20 seeds
1.
2.
3.

5 Mesclun Gormet Green Mix of 7 varieties about 50+ seeds
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

I print the pages out. If printer not working, than I just write out on paper. I keep the printed pages next to me. Than I can just skim the oink thread for my name, I can see right away if I have any available and let them know. Then when I get time I can go back and edit my seed list on line.

My paper may look like this when done example:

5 Thyme Thymus vulgaris 30 seeds
1. Tcs
2. perennially me
3.
4.
5.

3 Rosemary officinalis Rosemary 20 seeds
1.KLStuart
2.
3.

5 Mesclun Gormet Green Mix of 7 varieties about 50+ seeds
1. Rides
2. Lebug
3. nbard
4.
5.

Then when I get time, I confirm cmails, update my seed list. Then at the end I can match my paper to my online seed list which look the same and see if I missed anybody requests. Works really great too, if ya don't have the time to pull requests and put in that person pile at the time.

Everybody has their own style, I found copying this method easiest for me. Since I such a scatter brain some days chasing my tail round and round. Hilarious!

New piggies if ya like how somebody else doing theirs, don't be afraid to ask them how to do it. They great folks and will gladly help ya with ya anything. Heck they taught me. Rolling on the floor laughing Big Grin

Ya all probably got bug eyes and cauliflower ears from me rattling on again this morning. Rolling on the floor laughing

soilsandup,
I have made a list of things I'm thinking of asking for and stucking it the trade area just so I wouldn't have to keep flipping back and forth between pages. But I put a note at the top stating that. Haven't C-mailed anyone yet, as it's not time to start. But If I don't find a way of keeping track at little on a daily basis I'll get totally completely lost.
I'll see if I can redo that some way so it doesn't confuse any one. Confused

I am still saving and listing seeds in hopes of being finished by November 3

Does anyone have any tips on saving/drying gourds, especially birdhouse gourds? I have read some links and decided to keep mine on the vine until frost, clean them with dilute bleach then to dry them outside over winter. Guess I won't have seeds of these until next year since they need to dry.

Ella you can safely add another field to the database without messing up anything else. If you are still afraid to try it just set it so I can help you with that just for this database until swap is over that way if anything happens that keeps you off of here for a bit I can go ahead and set up fields if tcs or Lebug give the OK for them.

It only messes up the data in there if you change a field from text to paragraph or anything else and vice versa.

If you want a walk through while adding the field just let me know and we'll set up a time to do it

Gosh I’ve been gone a couple of days and you all have been chattering away lol

The clematis I’m offering I planted them way early in the spring (I think I’m going to have to go to the directions and check them out again it’s been so long ago) they sat until the late summer then germinated I put it in a little big lots greenhouse for the winter because they only had about two leaves on them in a two inch pot I was checking on them constantly because there are mice out in the garage just knew they were going to have them for dinner lol It’s been a while since I grew mine about four years I think but seems like they finally started getting some size on them around May or June of the second year.

The clematis I’m offering seeds to is a shrub but it doesn’t stand up it sprawls along the ground and is about two foot long and has the cutest blue bell blooms on it. I’ve seen pictures of people putting tomato cages around them to keep them upright but it looks prettier just sprawling along the ground thing is you have to watch for blister beetles at the first of the summer I think? They can eat a whole plant in about two hours I planted maybe three of them and only have one left and it’s by the sidewalk so I can keep an eye on it!

Sharon your clematis is sure pretty!

Sorry Ella haven’t been on for a couple of days was trying to help the neighbor paint his garage so maybe I can get some help later too :) Plus been transplanting from three inch pots finally we had that little rain the other day only about ¼” but the little three inch potted plants just shot up that was what they were waiting for that’s the most rain we have had now for over two months it was suppose to rain a little last night but don’t think we got any, no evidence of it this morning anyway. Then I’ve been doing seeds at night so I’m not so far behind like I’ve been the last couple of years I’m always on here and not getting anything done lol

Danita, I just make a folder in my cmails for request of that year I put the year on the folder like Piggy Swap 2010 because I’m in the swap every year :) Makes it a lot easier to find requests when they are all together :)

Andi, that sounds like what I’ve read on the net for drying gourd seeds think you will have to wait until next year to offer them that’s one reason I’ve never grown the ones to make birdhouses with I’m too impatient to wait for them then have to let them sit for a year lol

Holy cow... miss a halfa day and i have a lot of reading to do... but i wanted to say..

Dianne [soil] as for keeping track of all those seeds... My first piggy swap 4 yrs ago, for some odd reason I got over 300 seed packets in the mail!! I put them all in a spreadsheet, which i tweak each year.

And one thing i will do.... I read everyone's WANTS lists... If i have something that they really want, I will contact that person and offer it to them. sometimes I have a few extra seed packets that i do not list, and will offer them later in the swap.

Have to admit.... while i love being 'up north' -- I can not wait to get home tomorrow!! I'll be out in the garden, hopefully AFTER I help DH unpack the car [though i am usually very bad at that] ... The weather should be decent for a few days so i can get a lot of gathering seeds and cutting back plants.

OH -- I got a 'yellow' low growing Gaillardia at a RoundUp this June ... would anyone be interested in seeds?? Problem though... it's still blooming. Not sure how many spent blooms i can get, though DH and I will be up in a few weeks -- I have to put my car in storage up here and it's at home... so I should be able to get some more seeds in a few weeks, if there is interest.

OH -- I have an image.... Thumb of 2010-10-19/tcs1366/f76ab7
