My hog wild box arrived today....at my own post office.

It had an official sticker stating that the box was opened and inspected for "suspicious contents". I also had a standard orange post card saying that the box couldn't be delivered because the addressee wasn't legible - the official sticker was on top of the address label obscuring Ella's address. I have no idea what was suspicious, unless drug sniffer dogs picked up the scent of the opium poppies -ironically collected from the poppy plant in front of the post office. Maybe the box was oinking???? I will solve the mystery with the postmaster on Monday. The office was already closed. I was only able to access my post office box.

Good grief. It quite possible. With all the threats going on and folks being accused of not doing there jobs good enough, they doing a bit more checking. I have had boxes delivered before that had been opened and retaped with it had been inspected, but everything was in there.

Sorry your having such a problem Andi. Maybe having po seal it, they have sticke r that says been inspected already.

I was able to pry off the sticker, peek in the box, and reclose it. I left the box with the notices in the numbered locker at the post office and the key in my mailbox. I wanted to show it to the postmaster as is. She is a nice lady and a fellow gardener. I'll bring my list, a new mailing label and box with me. I always put anything moisture sensitive in plastic bags, so the seed packets are still packed up in their bags. At least the idiots didn't unwrap and unpack the labeled groups. There didn't seem to be any stray seeds. I didn't have my list with me, but everything seemed to be there except the homemade chocolate truffles - sorry ella.

I always take pictures of anything I send, just in case. I am looking at the pictures and laughing. You'll understand when the package arrives, Ella. The postal cops must have thought that someone has a crazy grandma. I still have to reconcile my hand scribbled list with the master list online. I think that everyone's seeds and the extras are still there, but I'll be sure on Monday. I don't expect to pay twice to ship this, if they don't credit my shipping there is going to be a very irritated piggy working the phones! I am already on a first name basis with the postal cop in charge of this area from the time my regulated prescriptions went missing - 3x in a row. (We won't mention the poppy seeds, lol)

Luckily, the people that I work for/with use fedex and pick up the shipping costs both ways.

I feel bad that I may be delaying feeding time for the piggies! I am sure that Ella is dying to get our troughs out of her home.

Life here in the "sanity gap" is not like life other places I've been. Sometimes it reminds me of that tv show "Newhart" - the one with the country inn, not the reruns in the shrinks office.

someone stole your home made Truffles!! I'd be ticked. Did you happen to photograph those too as proof? or was that what they felt was suspicious?? the scoundrels.

I don't know what was "suspicious" but I suspect that the postmaster can call it up. They didn't note anything removed. I have the pictures and she can double check the weight, so I am going to complain. I am not far from NYC and friends in the financial sector have had warnings in their mail rooms, etc. There are also warnings about opened food in grocery stores. I can't imagine anyone poisoning food and leaving it in the grocery store with all of the cameras around. Walmart was adding more cameras last time we were there. Maybe they are randomly opening packages or a drug sniffer dog sniffed poppy seeds and chocolate or the person who stole my prescriptions is targeting any box with my name or I am just terribly unlucky. I don't know. At least they didn't seem to mess with the seeds and Ella's other surprise was there. I just feel bad because I thought Ella deserved some fancy chocolates for all of her trouble. I make them for gifts and to sell around Christmas time.

It could be worse, they could have sent me back a completely empty box. THAT would be beyond infuriating after saving, sorting, and packing the seeds in those tiny hand folded envelops. This is why we pay extra for tracking our piggy boxes!

The PO has been pretty good to us... once for me, i had MG seeds confiscated coming out of Canada. and DH "lost" a package going to Moscow -- a one of a kind piece worth $1400, so that one hurt. [and the guy/purchaser only had it insured for $145 i think]
Needless to say ... DH is not shipping over seas anymore... the one to S.Africa only took about 6-7 weeks to get there.

But I too dont like shipping out of the country... just the one mishap and i've probably traded 6 or 7 times out of the country.

Andi -- hope you get it sorted out.

Andi.. You think you had it bad. I was sending out all kinds of trades and at time was doing a lot of shopping on line and would send all them ebay place s money orders.

One company didn't get my money order and it was quite a bit of money. I filed it lost and for a refund. Thankfully the company had sent my seeds on anyways and was good enough to wait for a second payment. Well,I went to check on my lost report and the report came up missing too.

We had somebody down here in the one area that was taking packages and money orders. Figure whoever it was that took the money order also took the report too. I was not a happy person. Oh no.

My local postal people are great. They really care about us and go the extra mile. It once the stuff leave s them that I worry.

Well, that a bummer to boot as I would have snarffed down that chocolate in a heart beat too. For real, cuz they should have resealed it up, seen it was a seed swap and sent it on it's way instead of returning. I would send the main offic e them file a big complaint report too. I hate calling there 1-800 help and report number cuz ya get such a run around before you can finally get to somebody to make a complaint.

Ya the po can tell ya at what station it was opened and inspected and who did it too, and then ya can file big report and tell them this is the person who opened inspected and the homebaked goods disappeared. That way they can keep an eye on that person , especially if ya been having stuff disappear from same area. After I filed big reports, my stuff started going through fine.

Well 'knock on wood' I've sent seeds to England sever times probably about twice a year for the last few years and I haven't had any problem with them but now that I mention it I hope the package I'm getting ready to send out now doesn't stray!

Andi I'm so sorry that had to happen to you very frustrating Grumbling With all of these stories about the P.O. I cringe every time I send seeds out anymore!

Oh, Ella those dianthus were 'ideal select red' just found them on the spreedsheet but really I've got enough seeds to plant so don't fret on it I didn't think I had a name for them just thought they said red dianthus.

I talked to the local postmaster yesterday. She is very nice, been working here for years, but has a very relaxed attitude. The area is changing. They are even starting to deliver mail in some areas FINALLY which I am sure is making her life more complicated. The only thing that I can do is track my mail and file complaints with the post office and the post office police every time something gets lost. Since I don't drive, it would be really convenient to get prescriptions delivered by mail. As long as the post office allows their employees to steal and the drug companies label their boxes "PRESCRIPTIONS PLEASE RUSH" I can't rely on receiving them by mail. In December, I ran out of a few medications because I couldn't get a ride to the pharmacy. (There is a transportation service for disabled persons who don't drive. They claim to have not received my 6 applications including the ones send return receipt and the ones faxed. The post office may be partially to blame for this, but ....Last week, I delivered my application in person, had them sign a letter that it was received while a friend took a digital photo. They got that one.) Nothing like being in pain and out of painkillers.

She credited me for the postage of the wayward box and two envelops (also containing seeds). I brought them home to repack and resend. All of the piggy seeds were intact but the truffles and my master lists were gone. (Luckily, the return postage was still there). There was one surprise for ella that may have caused this problem (it oinked.) I rewrote the list, removed the oinker for now (he'll find his way to ella eventually, when the post office people return to their lackadaisical selves) added a few seeds that I found cleaning out the kitchen cabinets and breakfronts - MUST DECLUTTER is my motto for 2011.

As to the truffles. They were obviously treats. I package them to look pretty. There was no reason for anyone to help themselves to ella's treats. The local, state and federal post offices have received emails with pictures, tracking numbers, copies of my truffle pricelist and estimated value of treats, etc. I want the people who ate them to get major indigestion.

I had a similar situation with an order, Ella. I design knitwear and clothes. I had a sample made from very expensive fabrics for a very important new client. Luckily I had it insured. It got lost. It is a one of a kind item with a deadline and it was lost. They started making excuses until they saw how much it was insured for. They found it really fast. The box had tire tracks on it and was burst open. Luckily, I had the garment sealed in plastic bags. A friend hand delivered it for me via motorcycle. The client didn't believe that I had sent it until she saw the receipts and the box. I would have lost a client due to the post office.

There is a reason that the post office is going out of business. It is still the cheapest way to send regular packages. However, once you add on tracking, insurance and general aggravation they aren't as competitive.

The piggy box is ready, but we are getting a wintery mix outside. I am giving them a chance to get the sidewalks cleared and sanded before walking back up to the post office. It should go out this afternoon or tomorrow morning. We have a big snowstorm heading in on Thursday and lasting thru the weekend. I want the box to be headed south before it hits.

I am sorry to the piggies for delaying their feeding time. At least the post office thief wasn't a gardener.
