HI All. Sorry so slow to get on here and shout THEY'RE HERE!!! Yippee!

I was all day at the Lego League tournament, that I thought was going to be the end of the season. Wouldn't you know my little team of 4th and 5th graders up and won 3rd place in the regionals... so now we have another month of practices and the States in Charleston in March... umm, when am I supposed to get back to seeds? But, they did great, so I guess I can split my obsessive time between 2 or 3 hobbies for a while :)

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful seeds! I just can't wait to sit here for a while and get through them all and put them into my spreadsheet, figure out what's going where, and start to panic that I'll never get it planted Rolling on the floor laughing

Landrace: locally-adapted diversity

No lists for me....

You all thought I grew land-races for the genetic diversity. Ha! A great thing about growing land-races is that I don't have to keep lists. I'm opening each tomato seed packet, taking out 3 seeds, and combining them into a common lot. I'll grow them that way and save seeds from whatever does good in my garden. Wee wee wee. I've reduced 100 varieties of tomatoes down into one of my 4 tomato land-races. I don't have to keep track of where each variety was planted. No pedigrees allowed.

Another wonderful thing about growing land-races is that I don't have to keep my seed pure. Oh I do simple things like grow hot peppers in a different field than sweet peppers, but if it gets any more complicated than that I'm not much interested.

I'm starting a watermelon land-race this year. I approach that a bit differently. I'll plant one packet of seed, and then the next and the next until all 60 varieties are planted and we'll see what grows. Actually I should say I am importing a watermelon land-race this year from Indiana and adding about 59 varieties to it. It had about a hundred varieties to start with.

and the beloved Winston the pug
He looks like Winston Churchill, especially when toting a rawhide, so Winston is a good name. I am trying to get him to come when called, which could be confusing for his little brain if I keep changing the name, but I got tired of saying "Pugsley, Pugsley" over and over again. I also considered naming him after a chef because he loves being in the kitchen, but none of the names seemed to fit. He doesn't look like a Pierre or a Craig to me.

I read that the Chinese used to choose pugs based on the characters formed by their forehead wrinkles. I don't know Chinese, but his wrinkles look like a bird flying. A neighbor suggested birdbrain, but that isn't fair.

He isn't interested in plants except for the occasionally marked shrub. He was very excited when I was cutting up bottles in the kitchen earlier because he thought all of that commotion must mean something good to eat...sorry Winston. Here is a picture, his eye looks cloudy in the picture, but not in person.

My preschool age gardening friend, Talullah, calls him "Bugs" like Bugs Bunny. He was riding on a plastic sled with a few of the neighborhood kids today. He is a very friendly pup. I have been putting easy to grow seeds together in a Valentine for her and others for a few gardening friends. All girls should get something fun for Valentine's day....

Andi, that picture of your pup reminds me of my years of teaching 7th grade. His face has that WHO ME? expression. So I would name him WHOME. He is precious. I can see why you are considering keeping him.

Ella -- how is it that i got a pack of my own Marigold seeds back ? Blinking

WOW, i ended up with just over 100 seed packs... I though i was in the 60 range.

I have 2-3 seed packs i may take a photo of and post as i have no idea what they say.

I had one seed pack 'spewing' seeds... luckily i figured out who is was, and put them back.

Andi, if you look at your flying bird as an upper lip, you'll see the lower lip just below it. Looks like a shapely set of human lips on Winston's forehead.

Your are right, from that angle it looks like lips! It reminds me of looking at clouds. Here are more pictures of his wrinkles.

At first, he was very timid, but he is starting to relax and be himself. He sleeps a lot and snores. He doesn't seem to sleep very soundly because he follows me if I start walking around. He makes the funniest expressions with his eyes.

I have been missing Tiffany, my 16 year old Westie who died this summer. Winston is good company. He has a very different personality. She was very smart, but stubborn. He is very eager to please, but a slower learner. I think he has had a difficult time. He needs extra nutrition, care and attention.

This is my first time being a foster pet parent. I might be getting too attached, but it is hard not to love such a sweet little guy.

Love forgives all wrongs.
Andi, is there any reason why you can't keep Winston? I imagine he is also getting very attached to you as well. He seems very easy to fall in love with. How can you resist loving babies and puppies? Winston is very cute!!!

Joy! Rapture! Bliss!!!

Such a treasure trove of seeds arrived in the mail yesterday. Wow! I'm not sure I can even get all my seeds properly sorted out; I think I'm just going to start winter sowing until I run out of containers or deck space, whichever comes first LOL

It's been a very slow process getting them in my database. Much of it was entered as i was oinking away during the swap... but it seems i got about 40 more packs than i requested... I wonder how that happened. Blinking
