Ugh! Not a chicken lover here. I had to take care of the chickens, ducks and geese as a child. I'd choose ducks and geese over the chickens anyday. We had a rooster or 2 also ... had to watch out for those guys. LOL
Now, I'm happy buying my free range eggs from a friend at work ...

I had yesterday off work, was going to WS some seeds, then began running a fever ... no other symptoms. Didn't get one thing done. Had to call in sick to work today, fever is down, but still there???? Well, my stomach hurts at times, but that is all ... what the heck????

Ahi (ah-he) the cat is sick ... DD took him in yesterday, he has a partially blocked intestine, we are at a 'wait and see stage' right now. He seems fine, just throwing up and diarrhea.
Vet says to wait it out, one way or the other. Sad
I love that cat, even if he drives us crazy with his talking.

Critter, I think I was looking in the wrong almanac yesterday for you Confused

Today I'm looking in the Harris' Farmer's Almanac and I think it's the one w/the info I was looking for.

It says for the Northeast region: Apr. '13 - No gardening in the mountains. Other areas can start using protected gardening methods by April 14th. A frost or freeze possible in protected areas about April 2-3, 7-9, 18-21. Rains and thunderstorms in costal areas expected about April 1, 4-6, 15-17 and 24-28. Possible heavy rains in southeast. General gardening spreads through all of lower elevations by May 13.

Hope this helps.

Oh no, not the wrong forecast, Wildflowers! I got right on it and planned my spring vacation according to when I thought it would be safe to leave the garden to fend for itself... now you tell me there could be a freeze and too much water at the wrong time and and and...

Actually that forecast looks closer to what seems "normal" around here, if there is a normal these days! With the first one I was thinking, wow, I guess I've been planting a month or more later then warranted! LOL

Star, hope you & your neighbors all get well soon! I'm going to leave my box on the front porch while I hose it down with Lysol. Well, maybe not, but we've already picked up our share of the crud for this winter!

critter, I have two almanacs for this year LOL! I say "wrong" almanac because the Harris' seemed to give a specific date. Harris' almanac is a "Gardening Guide." I didn't really compare the days to see how similar they were Whistling The original almanac post is from the The Farmer's Almanac Since -1818 for 2013. It should be interesting to see which one is more accurate. Maybe more info is not always better! Blinking

Laughing about the Lysol, although it's not a bad idea. Hilarious! I was planning on putting the whole box in the freezer, per Joseph's idea. Do you think the freezer kills germ bugs too?

Group hug Star, I'm teasing (mostly-but seriously wonder if freezer kills germs) and send warm healing hugs to you. You are very appreciated. Hope you get better soon! Lovey dubby

Influenza virus can live about 8 hours outside the human body. That should be plenty of time for safety. Unless your mailman is sick.... Confused

Well, since I'll be out of town for the week starting tomorrow, and my mail will be sequestered at the post office, I'll keep an eye out for my mail lady when i come back to see if she picked up the flu from my box... Whistling

Still packing, and have to wake up at 2am to start driving at four. There's a conference in Orlando we're going to, and it just happens to be at Disney World! My kids are psyched, to say the least! I'd be happier about it if 3 out of 4 family members (me included) weren't coughing! Can't cut a break, flu on Christmas morning, and colds going to Disney. Oh well, maybe the sun will bake it out of us.

Glad something fun might be waiting for me when I come back to the cold!

Delightful! Maybe dilute bleach as well ... or Hydrogen Peroxide!

I think we're going to have the Postmaster General scolding us Piggies any minute now ... or maybe DHS.

Careful toomanyanimals-you might get Swine Flu from that spotted pig.
I tried to become a cat person, really I did. I decided that Cat would have to come inside to save the squirrels and birds and I made all of the necessary arrangements for feeding indoors. I purchased and set up the accoutrement for good hygiene. I brought Cat in when I got home one evening, and ignored the toenails snagging on my old sofa as she scrambled to sit at the topmost point. I did not bristle at getting her off the bar a couple of times and I thought we would both adjust.
Later that night I woke up with an unsettling sensation of heaviness. It seemed unusually difficult to raise my head from the pillow to sneak a peak at the alarm clock. When I reached up to scratch the itch on my forehead my hand found a puddle of fur instead. Cat was wound around my head like a fur hat. I spent the rest of the night moving her off my head and eventually put her in a bathroom from which issued plaintive meow's until the alarm went off.
I have no problem when a 75 pound dog decides to sleep at the bottom of my bed, but I could not countenance a 7 pound cat. I renewed my efforts to find Cat a good home with people who would appreciate her, and tonight I found the perfect place for her among a family with older children who will give her the affection she deserves. Her kits should be here any minute and they already have plans for them. Whew! What a relief. I kind of miss her already, but I just don't think I have the right personality to be a cat mom.
Maybe if Cat and I had met when she was a kitten things would have been different..... Shrug!
