| Hi everybody. Still packing and digging. I am waiting to see pictures of everyone's gardens in progress. I am sure they are more attractive than my pot ghetto! Wait until you see my "new" back garden. It is an expanse of tree stumps and slate that would take an overoptimistic gardener with too many plants to love! I am going to need more paving slates. I saw a pile of them walking Winston. This area has houses surrounded by woods. It is common for people to dump cut shrubs, rocks, etc from their lawns into the woods. Somehow ditched a bunch of slate paving stones.There is plenty of slate around here, but it is hard to find big, flat pieces. The movers grumbles about the pavers last time, but I am tempted to take my wagon and grab these. I wish that I drove. It would make life much easier. I am tired of riding the bus, asking friends for rides and wheeling things around in my wagon. Oh well, it is a lovely day and I am lucky to be alive, driving or not! Lunch break is over, back to work! |

| we currently have snow showers. tomorrow Sunny and 41, then warming into 50's with rain Thurs & Fri. should be 60's by early next week... when I need to head to WI for a week. | OMG, we are getting rain tomorrow, but no snow. It will dip below freezing at night from Tues - Thursday. I was digging up my plants in the front bed, but came inside. Winston and I were about to blow away like Dorothy and Toto. Digging up plants is easier than planting them, but not as much fun! What a nightmare, at least the worst will be over in a few weeks. Still deciding whether or not to wheel my wagon up the street and get those paving slates.... |

| I am bagging up stuff for the consignment shop and the Salvation Army. I have enough "painting clothes" to paint for weeks without doing laundry. Time to ditch the dumpy duds (except for my favorite comfy ones). |

| Andi -- you have the weather I had 2 days ago... it was pleasant, but gosh -- really windy. I had pruned my rose bushes.... they really took a beating this winter... I had all the canes on a sheet [that is how i transport garden refuse, to dump in the back] it was so windy, it took the whole sheet, with thony canes, and rolled it up, slightly blowing it down the little hill. Now, i couldnt pick it up because of all the thorns and the thorns are now stuck into the sheet.... so I ended up sitting on the ground with a landscape bag [those huge paper ones for recycling landscape scraps] -- this thing is now blowing in the wind.... so I sat, clipping each cane into smaller pieces, to get them in the bag -- which is blowing in the wind. ~~ What a miserable experience... and I could see my DH with cocktail in hand on the patio... just watching me. | Thanks for starting new thread Tcs. Been raining here for most of the day and the thunderstorms coming in bit and will be here til sometime tomorrow evening. Rain total for today and tomorrow has been upped to almost 4" now. I ain't never gonna get any beans or cukes or squash in the ground at this rate. It was windy cold friday, by Saturday evening sun came out and it went like crazy to 86F and now it in the 60's and yep we going to freezing for Tuesday night. Already got some plastic and cheese cloth ready in place so I can cover tomorrow night and hope things don't freeze anymore. Had the fan going, now gotta get the heater going again and the snow clothes. I got my first real bloom of anything coming on. A deep, deep purple Iris. I will probably bring it in so the bloom doesn't freeze off. Anything anybody has that special and things like tomatoes and peppers out I would plop a bucket over the top at night and leave on til it warms up a touch. Soils... Have a good time and a safe trip and a Happy Blessed Easter to you. Arlene... I think the Plecanthus has bit the dust. I'm gonna leave the pots sit for awhile, like the next month or two, but not expecting anything to grow. Was reading that they hardy for zones 9 to 11 . Mine got soaked with ice and snow and a ton of rain, but maybe if you bring yours in under shelter come late fall or winter, maybe it might overwinter. Andi... You might as well get your wagon and get a few of those pavers. If you don't you'll be kicking yourself later. What the difference if it furniture or pavers, they movers and that what they get paid for. I'd make them load and transport all your plants too if you don't. Save your back and body for digging them in your new place. If you can get any from a local store, those egg cartons and some of the one gallon drink boxes come with handles on the side. Those type boxes work great for moving plants. Just put a cheap kitchen trash bag in it and plop your plant. The plastic will help keep moisture in and around the roots and with having the handles on the boxes it makes it easy to pickup and carry. Tcs... You might consider the same thing for your plants. Ouch and double ouch. Roses are so beautiful and yet they hurt so much. Seems no matter how careful you are you get stuck. |

All i have is this cheap Vodka that the MIL bought us... it's horrible, even mixing it does not improve the flavor. We have not stocked back up after FLA, and I leave for WI next week... | Ella, my Plecanthus is doing fine. In fact I just potted them up. 9 of them I think. I will save seeds for you. I plan on sending three to my daughter in MI. I have a lot of seeds from the trade I feel horrible about because I used the fine vermiculite and they didn't germinate. I hate wasting seeds like that! But I still have a lot to plant and a lot already growing so I can't dwell on it. My greenhouse at the farm is full of babies waiting to go out but I am waiting until next weekend. We had to go to MD in March for a funeral, MI two weeks ago for a funeral then back to MI for a week's visit with my daughter so I have been gone a lot. It's surprising none of my babies died from that, just the HEAVINESS of the fine vermiculite. But now I'm home with hopefully no more travels and can try and get going on this again. If anyone has any advice on Mrs. Wilmot's Ghost erygnium(sp) I could use help. Twice I have tried to sow, once outside in fall, once winter sowing and Jen tried WS last year for me too. NOTHING!!! How did she get them all to volunteer when she spread them is what I'd like to know when I can't for the life of me get them to germinate!!! |

| here is to hoping my seedlings huddle up together tonight. I don't have the plastic to cover them. Doesn't look like a hard freeze tonight so I'm betting them will be fine. |

| You could cover them up with an old blanket, plastic garbage bags, extra clear shower curtain....something. Tomorrow night, I will be bringing some of the pots back in...bother. |

| Looks like we are all in for another ride on the weather roller-coaster again. My garden is mostly planted already. Lots of seeds up and growing. I've already lost quite a lot of tomato plants and hoping tonight's cold front doesn't dip too much - sure don't want to have to replant again. At least I won't lose my sunflower and corn seeds again this year - they are already growing, so not worried about them washing away like last year. Most of my winter and summer squash are up and growing. In fact everything is planted and growing with the exception of beans - which I haven't planted yet. While doing clean up out behind my potting shed - I found some seedlings from last winters sown seeds. a 2 liter soda bottle with heliotrope growing in it. So happy to see those babies. Along with a bottle with Roma tomatoes from last winter too. Those are going to come in handy. With all thhe rain we've been having - lots of weeds popping up. Not so easy any more for me to get down and pull any more. Think I need to find some specialized tools for people with limited mobility, if there is such a thing. Is everyone as impressed with this blood moon as I am? If it weren't so darn cold I would be out there trying to get a few photos. And I understand we will have another one this Fall. |

I wanted to see the blood moon but the cloud cover has been too thick. Thunderstorms last night and rain and fog this morning, but tonight there will be a freeze. I'll be scrambling to cover a few plants, but there is too much and it is too far flung to get everything under wraps. I hope we are rewarded for all of the cold damage by a perfect summer.  |

| Rain has let up for a minute or two so gonna go run out and move some plants and try and cover some others. Ran to dollar store yesterday and got a couple more packages of painters plastic. It a buck for big 10 ' by think it 10 or 15'. Very thin, but it does the trick of keeping the frost off the plants. I just brace it up on the ends with a couple of milk crates and pull it tight. In a couple of hours gonna need to turn heat back on in house and bring my pepper flats back in. Back gonna be screaming for sure. Txbaby... Glad your garden coming along so well. Now this may sound like a crazy idea, but it just might work. You know those think they call them "claws" for folks who can't reach things high or pick stuff up off the ground. I wonder if you couldn't get a heavy duty one. Metal that won't break easy. Them plastic ones in stores wouldn't be strong enough. To the bottom you attach of all things metal shoe inserts. The ones like men use to stretch out shoes. They are scoop shaped and the scoops are about 4 to 5" long. If you taped something liek that really good to the bottom of a metal claw than you would be able to open and close the shoe digger part and maybe pull weds out easier that way as long as they weren't real deep. You'd bring soil up with it probably, but you could always just shake that off. I have a set of the men's metal shoe stretchers and next time I go to my friends house, she has one of them cheap claws grabbers. I'll tape them on and see if it works at all. Ya never know til you try. Me too Poison. Heard that a blood moon was something to see, but I fell a sleep and with rain and clouds all night doubt if I would have seen anything either. Holler when the next one comes around if you think of it. Maybe the weather will be nicer than and I can watch too. Quoting: I hope we are rewarded for all of the cold damage by a perfect summer. | Couple of piggy seedling pictures. Salmon Sunset 4 O'Clocks...every one germinated!  One set of leaves hasn't opened yet, but the next day they can be out in the sun will probably fix that. (Behind those are Chervil seedlings... for the butterflies. ) From a previous year...Devil's Claw. Such a big seedling! I like it...it's bodaciously cute and fuzzy.   Right or wrong, I set two flats of my hardy seedlings back outside in the cold sunshine for a bit today. I so do not want leggy little plants if I can help it. |

| It snowed this morning pretty bad and it's sticking on the grass and plastic covers. Duane took special care to make sure they were well-anchored, so hopefully, we won't lose anything. Chards and celeries are in the garage. Tomorrow will be another cold day, then Thursday it starts to warm up and Friday it's forecast to reach 13C. I have spent the last few days trying to nail down my tomato growing list for this year. I have gotten so many seeds over the past few years that I have resorted to stuffing them into little boxes for lack of room in my binders. I got a new binder for this year's seeds, but nothing new for the surplus seeds and I'm realizing how ridiculous that has turned out to be for finding things. I pulled everything out of the 2 binders I have of seeds I've never grown before and organized them by first letter. To alphabetize each one would be a nightmare. I have over 2000 varieties. Today, I have finally finished my list and for the first time since I started down this road of heirloom tomato-growing, I am growing 72 varieties of tomatoes that I've never grown before, several from NisiNJ, patti1957, and jhgarden.
