Finally, waking up to a cool morning. Gonna get hot later but nice to wake up to 68 instead of 75F for a change.

Aggggggggggggg! I can' believe it. Was watching tv last night when zap got hit in head again. Looked up and on ceiling above me was that stinker of a praying mantis back. Still trying to figure out how it got around and umbrella and two screens, but it did after taking it all across the yard to plants and bugs. I don't know if it is afraid of the dark, just looking for a warm place to hang out or what. Took awhile this morning to finally catch and release it again. Guess we'll see if it makes it way back in in a couple of days.

Some real pretty Dahlias there Christine. To me Dahlias like daisies, make ya just smile.

Guess what seed is ready!!!!!!!! Who would like me to go out and pick them a baggy full of Pokeweed seed. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Been watching the birds get drunk eating the seeds. To funny watching them piggy out than have to wear off a buzz on the ground. Hilarious!

Got enough pokeweed here, thankyouverymuch.

I'm getting really interested in that mantis's motive.
IS there an egg case in your house somewhere?????
IS she seeing herself in your glasses and thinking you STOLE her egg case?
What on earth is making her so persistent???

Maybe the praying mantis is a sign or an omen. I looked and found several links.
This one made me laugh when I read:
"The mantis never makes a move unless she is 100% positive it is the right thing for her to do."

I am not sure how smacking Starlight/Ella in the face could ever be considered the right thing to do.

Critter.... You and me both.

Because..... Unreal. There I am baking cookies and went to sink to clean cookie sheet and get ready for another batch and there, flying right to the egg beater in front of me lands the mantis right back. Heck I figured it would be a couple of days before maybe it would try and come back in, but nope just a couple of hours even after I took it out back door this time. It made it from back yard right back into the front door. Blinking Blinking

Don't think it my glasses cuz working up close I don't wear them. I took the egg beater with Buddy on it and stared back at it and tried to have a talk with a mantis about how the house is not the place for it. It just looked back at me like,... like.. I don't know what. Sure hope it ain't lust. Rolling on the floor laughing

I know there no egg case in the house. Haven't even seen one in the yard. Nothing that I can see or even think would keep attracting it. I have seeds laying out all over counter drying, but they been there days before the mantis even showed up. I am stumped. Maybe it wants me to find or make it some food like I do for the hummers and such. Driving me crazy trying to figure this one out. I not even sure all what they eat. Spiders and gnats and small bugs are all outside. Batteries totally dead in camera or would have taken pic of it on egg beater heading back outside and also had to chase my lizard back outside this morning. It crawled onto the front door screen but figured out how to get on the inside of it to sun. Lippy the lizard always getting in and out.

Just hope it stays out. Too hot to totally close the front door.

Hey Greene... Sometimes smacking me in the face is the only way to get my attention. Whistling Hilarious! For the critters anyways. If food is low for the hummers they get right in my face look at me and chatter away til I get them more food. Squirrels on my front door peeking in telling me to bring out some more nuts. Toads in my pots.

I don't have any fresh flowers or potted ones in the house, so I am stumped. It must want something bad though. Wonder if it likes chocolate chip cookies. Sticking tongue out

CritterG.... It would be nice if she can figure it out. I can't hardly get anything done checking the doors and ceilings and such to see if it comes back in. It will be dark soon, so I guess I'll find out. I'm hoping it found a playmate outside for sure.

Oh, I happy. Went out to water and though it running late in the season, found a bunch of blooms on my Confederate Rose shrubs. Hope they open up before frost hits. Kinda hard to believe next week starts the Fall season, but after all the heat and humidity I am looking forward to it.

If it's a LARGE mantis, and it sounds like it is, it's definitely a she.
I tweeted the bug lady - hope she tweets back tomorrow!

I'm wondering if it's the same mantis or if there's a whole group of them that may have hatched in your house, Star? I had some eggs hatch in my garage last winter (we had chicks out there with heat lamps so it must have been the right temp). I kept finding praying mantis in the front bathroom where I was cleaning and refilling the chicks water bowl. It took awhile for me to make the connection.
FAITH over fear!

Finally the power line box dried out enough to get back online. Boy we went from hot and humid to dig out a sweater and sweat pants over night. Feels good though. Just wish it would stay these temps all year round. Low 80's and 55 to 60F at night. Did get a bit chilly yesterday with all the rain. Think March was the last time it was ever 62F during the day. Body didn't know how to act that was for sure.

Dahhhhhh.... Had to go back and read your post twice CritterG. I was looking for what she said. Didn't register what she had said at first. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I wish that had been the case. I have had the doors and windows closed for several days so hopefully it has moved on. Wasn't gonna take a chance on it coming back in. Next time , if such a thing happens maybe my batteries won't be dead. Smiling

I sat out on porch Sunday for a few and this time instead of praying mantis or dragon fly, had a stupid grasshopper that just came and sat at bottom of my feet for a long time just starring at me. I tell ya, I feel like that guy who played in the movie that talked to the animals, only I seem to be talking to bugs as well as critters.

Saturday evening was watching where I was walking to back door where snake was and was so busy concentrating on ground didn't see at first that I had scared several deer, momma and babies right by my back door. They munched the Daylilies and ate the seeds off of the Beauty berry bushes and some of the wild muscadine fruits. I said Ahhhhhhhhhhhh and then a bit later was saying UGGGGGGGGGG cuz that means ticks big time that drop off of their fur. Hate ticks as much as hate snakes. (shiver.... shiver)

Wild.. I looked around, but I know it was the same mantis cuz it flew in the front door. I have so many critters and bugs here it unreal sometimes. Probably not a square foot around here that if you looked you would find some sort of critter or bug.

I had an empty soil bag sitting on porch next to me. Was to lazy to throw it out and thought well I'll just leave it there and fill it with broke pots or such for trash man when I did clean up. Well, I had this wasp that would always fly next to me into that bag. I thought maybe it was getting a drink of water from it. It would fly right next to my coffee and my arm, but never bothered me. It would go into the bag and fly out a bit later. I finally decided to use the bag and opened it up to stuff broken pots in and here inside was a nest it had built. I said sorry and used the bag and out to the trash went that wasps nest.

It got even with me. I had seen it flying in and out of the house when the door was open, but didn't think to much about it, usually they fly in and either find their way back out or hang on window sills. While I was hunting for mantis case I looked up and here in my living room wall corner, what do I now have, a wasp nest. I swear the darn thing did it on purpose to get even with me for destroying the one it had on the porch.

The only thing I can think of, is that I hang my clothes and such outside off the fence rail to dry. So my clothes always smelling of the plants and trees and weeds and such from outdoors. Maybe it the natural smells that get absorbed while my clothes are drying that attracts them. I just don't know. All I know is the more wild I let this place go the more critters I have to deal with. Some pleasant surprises, some not so nice. Blinking Blinking

Has anybody ever grown Heather before? All I know is it is supposed to be a herb. I was reading a book and they mentioned the plant Heather. I realized I have never seen the plant and was thinking I need to see about adding it to my wish list if it something that I might be able to grow. Is it like Lavender? Confused

You ARE quite the insect magnet! Hilarious!
Love the stories though!

Heather, the main one that uses that common name, is not like lavender.
I don't know how to accurately describe it though, because I am not THAT familiar with it.

Common Name: Heath, Heather
Botannical Names: Erica (Heath) and Calluna (Heather)

I'd suggest you poke around over here:
