Bluespiral wrote:I have a question about what to put on the label on the seed packets we send in:

In addition to putting the botanical and/or common names on the packet's label, could you also request that we put the date the seeds were harvested or their commercial date on the label too?

I realize that's not always possible, but it's so useful. Although some seed can be viable for centuries like canna ("The hard seed are very long lived, having germinated when 600 years old, found in a pre-Columbian rattle." or lotus (1,000+ years ), some like larkspur often don't germinate after a year past ripening. Viability information can only be used as a guide, but still, I think dates of seeds are useful.

That is really a good point Bluespiral Not everyone knows that some seeds are (very) short viable.

Well, I already packed most seeds, but I will make a note in my have list with the viability date. Next year I will put the dates on the packets.

Thank you Ella. It is good to be back. I have started gathering seeds.

I agree - I would like a date on the seed packets as well.

Promise..... You did good. Like the pic too you have used to decorate your stall. Big Grin
I got your practice database removed and have your cmail addy in place for you. I see you can oink, so now all you need to practice is rolling in the mud. Rolling on the floor laughing

Gardengus... While I'm thinking about it Cinda. Your no longer under the C's. I switched you to your screen name first so your under the G's. Trying to keep the database all with screen names first as that is the name folks will be posting to oink with. That way their is no confusion over folks with same names or new folks and even me getting confused as to who is who. Big Grin

Please sign me up, but I won't be active until after Dec. 1st Big Yellow Grin I won't make my haves list active until then since I won't be able to respond.

Hope there will be some seeds left by then. Thumbs up

Dianne - how about putting up some of your wishes? Those won't require follow-up from you, but will help the rest of us set aside some seeds of something you want aside for you :)

Karen / Bluespiral makes a good point here.... Post your wants.

Sometimes there is a particular seed you really want... there are times I will just come out in a post and say.... I'm looking for _________
and folks will offer up their seeds if they have it.

i will also go thru the seed swap lists and look for those who are looking for the seeds I do have, and I'll send a mssg and offer them if they have not yet received any.

I think it's a great way to offer / receive seeds that are truly wanted.

~~ I will not have a lot to offer this year... with my being in WI most the season, and only in IL a very short time, and now in FLA.... [switching zones]
I did not have too much time to grab seeds. But then, I wont need a lot either... even though i say that every year.

Soils..... Group hug I am so glad that you are going to join in even if you come in near the end. That's a good idea from Blue. Get your Wish List done, also, go through Tuinks site and start making your list that you want from her and put it in your Wish List with her name at the beginning.

I don't know if Tuink will be coming in early or later, but than when she does I can just copy and send your request to her as you know with her being one of the long haulers, she closes her list early to get things packed and mailed to here.

Even if you don't have your list up until in December, if you have access to computer from time swap starts, you can come in and just do oinking so you don't miss out on anything. You just need your Wish List and a a Bit About my Garden done to start oinking.

For those of you updating your Trades in and Out lists. I have added a few more names.
Once you have the list copied and posted in your In's and Out's than all you have to do is check on and off to the Participant's List and look at the bottom and you can see the latest folks whose names I have edited in.

Barbara00.... Don't worry. Don't panic. Just take it as slow and easy as you need too. Don't forget that Patti and myself are usually always around. Also the other Regular Piggies will be around to help you on this first venture into the barnyard alone. You won't be alone either. There are are other new piggies too and some are experienced traders, who once they get the hang of things I am sure will jump into help if you have any questions or problems. You might want to take a look at last years Oinking thread to refresh your memory. If you want to do some practicing, just holler out. We'll get you set up to practice Oinking and such. Big Grin

To answer a question that others might have too. Yes, it is ok to be in this swap as well as another swap too. I have no problem with that. We have several that are and they are fair to both swaps. All I ask is that you too be fair to both swaps. Don't give all your special or good seed to one swap and not the other. That is not fair to the participants in both swaps that have worked hard and are offering their seed up to you.

Best thing I can suggest is say you have six packets of something. Special or common, share them out. Offer 3 to each swap. If at the end of each swap you have some seed left that nobody took from one swap and is asking for in another, than offer it to them.

Just be mindful, considerate and thoughtful of the other traders as they are of you. Thumbs up

Thanks everyone for the wish list suggestions. The piggy swap has been one of the highlight events that I look forward to so I did not want to sit it out entirely. Big Grin

All you newbies out there - you'll have a lot of fun and there are so many interesting seeds being offered by piggies from all over.

As of this moment diamondgirl, that is diamondgirl and NOT Anita/Diamond919, has been removed from Survivor status, removed from this swap and is banned from this cubit.

You new piggies or older piggies that was not in the 2012 swap will not know about this. During that swap we had a Survivor that went by the name of sweetpea11. It wasn't til after the swap, thanks to a cmail from somebody who had joined this cubit and was a member at another cubit had sent me a link about this person. This person has about 40 or more aka's and goes from site to site trying to get free seed. When she is banned under one name, she'll pop up under another.

We do our best to make sure that everybody in this swap is legit. This person, unfortunately too late slipped in under the fence and got their seed. I was so upset over it. I had apologized to piggies who had sent seed to her and started doing more indepth searches for those claiming Survivor status.

The piggies here have big hearts. They give and share from the heart and it is wrong to abuse them.

I had checked out the area where diamondgirl was from. Part of what she said was true. Yes there was EPA work, but fine tuing showed not at her house.

This morning I got a cmail from diamondgirl asking how is works to be a survivor. I noticed something funny about her post. Now since the mini strokes, I sometimes forget stuff, but my mind, what there is of it left, Whistling noticed something funny about it that triggered a bad memory.

So I did a more indepth search and with a little help discovered that diamondgirl is really aka sweetpea plus all her other alias names.

She may try and sneak back in under another name. My admid's and myself will be checking constantly, but diamondgirl has already seen the database lists. While I have banned her from this cubit, I cannot bann her from all Cubits.

If you get a cmail from sweetpea11, diamondgirl or anybody else whose name is not on the official Participants list , or it not somebody you know, please do not send them any seed without first checking with me. If you do get a request, ask that person for their home address. I'll tell you if it is diamondgirl/sweetpea11's aka.... aka....aka... or not.

Don't know why some folks have to be so ugly. Just glad we caught her before the swap this time. Thumbs up

To diamondgirl.sweetpea11 or another name you try to use. I say shame on you and do not even attempt to join this swap again. I will rebann you and ask the Cubit owner to bann you also. Grumbling

Now on to more brighter things. Thumbs up

First, for some of the newbies, let me explain a couple of things for you.

No, you do not cmail folks ahead of time asking for seed. Nobody should be other than the exception I have. I'll tell ya about it in a minute.

What you do if there is something you see that you want, put it on your WISH LIST. Most of the piggies check the Wish Lists constantly and if you have listed something and they have seed for it, they may put it off to the side for you than when the swap starts, they will cmail you and tell you they have it.

If and when they do, than you cross it off your WishList and under you Trades In coming, you list that person's name and the seed. Also, when the swap opens, you can Oink for that seed on the Oinking thread, send your cmail and get confirmation that way.

As you get things from your WISH List filled, please edit and cross it off or delete it off. That way you won't end up with say 20 packets of sneezeweed which will all count towards your 100 limit and limit your choices for other seed.

If, I've lost you, holler out, be glad to explain again. Big Grin

Now, I mentioned an exception to the rule. With situations of some of our folks, I have to make a few adjustments so that they can join in. I think I have already mentioned we have a few folks that need help, so you may see me Oink for the seed and tell you to put so and so's name on it.

Everybody should be Oinking for their seed first on the Oink thread, than send your cmail confirmation, when it is confirmed add that confirmation to your Trades Coming in section.
One exception will be Tuinkabouter. Tuink for short.

Tuink just got her database up. Read her database Haves section closely. You may click on her site and start looking at all of her seed. Her seed site is wide open to the piggies, but there are a few things you need to do.

I would suggest taking time now and deciding what you want from her. Remember each thing you ask for is considered as one of your 100 or more if I let ya Oinks. As you find the things you really ..really want. Than in your WishList section put Tuink;s name and the list of seed you want from her. That way when the swap opens, all you will have to do is send her a big cmail with your request on it.

Now, if she is able too, she will tell you she is out of something. Sometimes she can't and you won't know if she out of something or not til you get your seed. It happens on and off with her. Because of her situation she has to do everybody all at once and can't be checking to do individual seed confirmations.

For Tuink, what you do is same for other piggies. Post your request on the Oinking thread, send her a cmail, add those seeds to your Trades in List and your count.

Here is an example of what a post to Tuink may look like:

Make sure you send her a cmail. She's not going to read the threads. When she gets your cmail, she'll add your list to her Out Going Trades list.

Yes, you can send her a list and later if you see something else you want, send her another cmail. Just don't sent 25 single cmails.

Now, if she's able Tuink may Oink for seed from you on the Oinking List. Generally you may just get a cmail from her with a list of things she wants from your list. You'll also note that she will also add the notation that if you have extras, please send them to her. If you have the extra or extra of other things, please send them for her.

If you need me to clarify more, I'll be glad too, just ask.

Now you may see myself and Patti1957 giving her our lists early. That does not mean you get too. That is because we so busy chasing piggies around, cleaning them up, unsticking them from mud and a host of other things plus answering all the cmails that we don't have time to go look. Plus I got dial up and took me three hours just for first page on her site to load. Oh I wish we had high speed out here.

No Jonna's site is not wide open. Jonna will post on her Have's list the seed that she has available. She is just recovery from her cancer surgery, so it may be several days before she can confirm your oinks to her. Do not keep sending her the same request over and over. She'll get to folks as she is able.

We have alot of folks that are not able to get on everyday or need help and Patti and I work as fast as we can to guide and help them. Just be patient, please.

Now last thing for today, I think, Hilarious! Hilarious!

I was asked about any other tips that might be helpful . Here it is:

1.Grease yourself up real good. With being slippery you'll be able to shake off the other piggies pulling your legs or trying to crawl over you easily.

2. Remove all hairbows from ears, tail and from around the neck. That way the other piggies can pull it and hold ya up.

3. Don't wear rubber boots over your hoofs. If you need to wear some sort of footwear, make it study sneakers, tied tight with good traction. The mud gets real slick at times and you'll end up with your boots stuck in the mud anyways.

4. Wear protective eye gear, preferably with automatic windshield wipers on them.

5. Don't feast and take a long nap. Check the databases often. While your snoozing away, mire seed is being listed and oinked up.

I think that is about all the tips I have for you at the moment. If I think of more I'll let ya know.

Only other thing is no fair squirting the water hose at me. I pin ears and tails to the barn door for that. Whistling Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
