Oh, this little piggy is breathing a sigh of relief!! (Joseph, you really must have sent an awful lot of seed that first year Hilarious! )

Star: I seriously don't know WHY I never joined before... shy? ME?? (no). Rules and regs? Never got that far. All I can say is, I had a LOT of fun and can't wait for next year, and will definitely encourage other people to join!

Ella -- I loved your story about Alana's pack. I was eagerly anticipating what it might be. Knowing Alana, I was pretty sure it wasn't anything nasty and moldy, but I was eagerly reading to see what it was. :)

Also, loved the long list of how many packs you received today. We're that many people closer to getting our new seeds!

Over the years I have had many packages that have about stopped my ticker. That's why I always ask folks if they putting anything in their box that will explode and sound like gunfire. Look like a live creature, move during the night and sound like a snake.

Just the way she had it packed , it didn't look like a cotton boll right off. I think the worsted box that about gave me heart attack was this seed that came in that looks like some live sort of crab creature that really sent me jumping out of my skin. I don't even remember now what the name of them was, but think they had some sort of sea type name, but they was so real looking and ugly!!!!!!!!!!!! But the flower they made was pretty.

Usually I open each box slowly and let it sit for a litle bit to make sure it not gonna attack me , but with mail coming late today wanted to get things listed fast so I just dive in.

Heck the other night I was going crazy wondering what was making this ssssssssss sound. Thought at first one of my sinks was leaking and her it was Indian Mikes corn seeds slowly shifting in the box.

Yep we have about half the people in so far. Still got about 25 or so to go. Once all the boxes get here than it takes me usually a week or two to finish things up. I can't do the one to one and bottom of the barrel section til I have all the packages in , than I have to do counts and package and double check everything and than I pray I haven't missed anything and that the packages all arrive safely.

Rick, I sure hope not, but ya never know. Never expected to have Joseph's son missing lizard either. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Boy oh boy, I don't know if ya seen news or not, but down here they said if you expecting packages to be coming from NJ that one of their big FedEx trucks trying to avoid a tire in the road , lost control and dumped his whole load all over the highway.

Some folks sure gonna have some squashed and broken stuff. Plus they gonna have to probably send them packages back to control station to be resorted again. Just hope no piggy boxes where in there since usps runs now with fedex.

Can somebody tell me what is the difference between Savory and Cress. You can eat both of them right? I don't have power til they get done with all the new poles and lines to google. So I know who to toss too.

Ella -- Savory is pretty much exclusively used as a culinary herb/spice. Cress is primarily a green, but can also be used as a culinary herb/spice.

RickCorey that's a beautiful photo of a web!

Yikes, I saw that truck tipped over in the ditch on the news... Sad Had to be a lot of Christmas shipments in there... (never mind Piggy seeds)

I didn't realize cress was used as an herb -- I've always thought of it as just a spicy little thing to add to sandwiches and salads. (I'd be happy get some... hint, hint Hilarious! )

I use cress like Sandy does, a little spicy thing to add to sandwiches and salads. It's smaller than nasturtium and watercress, but related and tastes similar. Summer savoury is amazing with beans and winter savoury I use in soups and stews, usually dried, but I did grow summer savoury in the herb garden and it was lovely fresh.

We may have a green Christmas this year - for me, that's always very special. I miss green Christmases. We got December weather in November and now it seems we're getting November weather in December. It sure makes holiday travel and shopping much easier.

I'm in full baking-mode now and enjoying the extra free time. Unlike most people, December is very easy and relaxed for me. I hope all of you are having a great time whatever your celebrations are.
Grazie a tutti,
Julianna

Thanks for the information. There so many veggies and herbs that I just don't know, and with my luck if I don't find out I liable to tossing the wrong thing to the wrong person. I thought it was some sort of lettuce and the only cress i really know is water cress. *Blush* Whistling Hilarious!

Well I'm off topic but just getting caught up on this thread Blinking

If you have inside cats they love those cabbage worms I’m always bringing in different worms for my cats to eat. Not sure what the big green worms are I find around here but they fight over those.

I read somewhere that you could spray regular flour for cabbage worms I did try it one year and it worked the row covers are good too. Mine are full of holes now really need to get more but they are so expensive!

I asked this a couple of years ago and no one replied Confused Tell me do the Echinacea seeds that everyone gets do some of them come true from seed? I always thought they would come out like the Magnus I planted some Sundown echinacea seeds that I really liked and that’s what happened never tried it again.

That's interesting. I've never seen our monsters eating worms. When I find non-earthworms in the garden, I put them on the bottom tray of the bird feeder. Usually, they get scarfed up quickly that way.

Lea -- I grew Merlot from seeds yrs ago, and I do believe it is my favorite.

I'd have to dig thru my old spreadsheets to find the details. But I dug it from IL and took it to Wi. It has the largest blooms that lasted until frost.

All the others I attempted, with the exception of the standard echinacea Purpurea, never made it. If they germinated, they ended up keeling over.

So -- guess i'm no expert on Cone Flowers.

Leah, try to find some tulle fabric on sale. It's cheaper than row cover material, lasts longer, and it lets in more moisture. I use it exclusively now. Smiling

Lebug Most of the Echie's that folks save seed from are hybrids. When you plant the seeds, you may get a plant that looks what you wanted, but you are also going to get a bunch that may look like either parent that was used in the breeding of that hybrid. Now because of the gentics involved where some of the hybrids may have had several parent's over a period of many years to establish a stable hybrid, you may end up with a totally new hybrid cultivar.

What happens is somebody works for years and years to get a stable cross. They get it patented and send it off to one of the big companies and they trial and then if they like they will send off to a company if they don't have the facilities to tissue culture the plants. When the tissue cultures are big enough than they send back to company and they finish growing out the plant.

Best thing you can do is google the Echie and see if it is a hybrid. If it is, you can be assured you gonna get something probably different.

Chelle Are you talking about like the 3 -4 foot wide tulle from off the fabric store bolts?

Yes. It works wonderfully! I find it on sale and buy the whole bolt...then I can make my own lengths to fit each particular use. The thing I need it for the most is to keep critters out, but if it's laid out right on top of a newly sown and watered area it also retains enough moisture to sprout seeds without any extra care. Thumbs up

Thanks Ella Big Grin I knew the seeds probably wouldn't come true was just wondering what everyone got no one ever seems to say for some reason. I had one to reseed in my front yard think it was mac & cheese but as usual I'm grabbing weeds not paying attention to what I'm pulling and pulled the darn thing Grumbling Now the mac & cheese along with a few others that I had are gone thanks to the voles in my beds hopefully having Sherbert here (the neighbor left his cat here when he moved) will take care of all the voles and I have my rat snake out front now for summer there isn't a week that goes by I haven't seen a vole laying out front somewhere.

My porch cat Babe takes the voles away from Sherbert when they are around the porch and I think he wants me to think he got them Rolling on the floor laughing He is not a hunter Rolling my eyes.

Chelle just knew someone would say try the tulle fabric I keep aiming to grab some at walmart, never go to fabric shops for some reason well they just aren't handy here never go past one when I'm at walmart I'm always in a rush having to be at Betteys at 3 every day to take care of cats I need one day off a week and there isn't anyone that will do it for nothing. I will try some one of these days...

I thought about trying it last year for the deer too I had all of this bird netting (from my cousin) spread over my tomato plants and a farmer told me to try Mylar strips so I put strips on bamboo stakes to blow in the wind around them and my daylilies well most of my plants and coke cans on bamboo stakes to rattle in the wind everyone was asking what's all this for? My yard was site last year but it was the first year for a deer to show up I was freaking out Rolling on the floor laughing Funny thing the neighbor that moved spent $500 on fireworks last July after he let all that off never saw the deer again Rolling on the floor laughing
