Happy New Year, everyone! We had a pretty nice day here, weather-wise... partly sunny, and we only have a few inches of snow on the ground from "winter storm Goliath." Lake Michigan is still completely open, which is a huge thing for us because that will keep our temps a bit warmer for as long as it lasts. And had dinner with family, which I always enjoy. A very good start to what will hopefully be a good year!
I've never heard of it... but I can grow big clumps of oxalis in my containers, so why not oca? The tubers are so pretty! Waiting on Joseph to report on their actual taste... not everything that's "edible" or "nutritious" is actually desirable on the dinner table! LOL
Happy New Year to everyone! Been having computer problems again always computer problems but computers make your life easier right
I'm so sorry to hear Patty, Plantnutz, Andi and Ella being sick hope the new year brings better health for you!
We had an awful year for flowers this year so much rain there wasn't enough sun for the flowers but of course the weeds grew out of control and they towered over the flowers shutting even more sun out! Everything seemed to be stunted my cleomes were about 2' does that give you an idea
Not on my computer it won't work anymore got too hot the fan quit working under it and didn't know it so it just shut off haven't been able to bring it back but I grew the cactus dahlias I got in the swap can't look and see who sent them but they never bloomed I put straw over them hoping they will be back for next year then uncovered them because we are still having so much rain hoping they don't rot.
I finally got around to planting the purple leaf salvia and just as it got too cold it finally bloomed so I'm hoping it shows up again next year and blooms a little earlier so I can get some seeds from it the leaves were really nice and big and it was a lot taller than I thought it would be.
The blue milkweeds were a beautiful shade of blue Cinda really loved those but Andi the white ones didn't bloom this year so guess I'll have to wait till next year for those.
And Karen didn't I get those cute little pink flowers from you I forgot what they are I did manage to get some seeds from them and your moonlight marigolds they looked really nice in my moon garden they were right at home!
Tony is asking for his computer back everyone get to feeling better
I started my first seeds yesterday. Just some flowers I want to get started early so they are in bloom to sell at market. People just don't like to buy them without blooms. Snapdragons, petunias, craspedia, allium drumstick, wallflower (I got red, white and a mix!).
I got a new snapdragon from Johnny's that is TALL, like 40-60" I'll have to stake those guys. I still had lots of seeds from last seed swap too. I planted every kind but saved a couple seeds back in case. Oh, I planted scabiosa too. I don't think they'll bloom this year though.
I'm looking forward to February and starting some seeds! (if it weren't for seed starting, I'm pretty sure I'd NEVER say "I'm looking forward to February" )
We're still having temps in the 30s (for highs), which is unbelievably mild for this time of year; supposed to be colder this coming week, but still pretty much in the 20s. What a great change after the past 2 winters!
I'm doing some winter sowing. Also I just ordered from peace seedlings, it is a great site they have ova and lots of original varieties of food plants and flowers. It if owned by daughter of Alan Kapuker, a seed guru who was at seeds of change more than 20 years ago when I first started ordering seeds. Back then it was mail order. Peace seedlings has one of my favorite cherry tomatoes PeaceVine. I had lost track of who was carrying it and sure enough they had it! Brings back fond memories from my kids growing up and "stealing" the little tomatoes right off the vine. Tiny very sweet, great for kids and eating right off the vine.
